  • I have read the first two novels in the three body problem trilogy. I have also watched all 30 episodes of the series on prime video. I've just completed all eight episodes of the Netflix series. Of the three, I like the Netflix series best. I understood it better than the other two versions, and found that it was very loyal to the book. I had heard that they had brought forward some of the next two novels into this series and was leery of that. However, I think it worked out fine. I really enjoyed this series, great job.

    • I mostly prefer the Tencent Version because it explores the deeper meanings of the Three-Body Problem despite its lengthiness in exploring the suicide investigations, the countdowns, the San-Ti VR mystery, ETO's divided factions, the San-Ti (Trisolarans), etc. Also, Da Shi was an amazing character thanks to the Chinese actor and his locust speech had more of a hopeful impact than the Netflix's version which felt bland. The only criticism I have with the Tencent Version is that it retconned Ye Wenjie's backstory and removed the story of her father's brutal execution during the Cultural Revolution.

    • I think character wise the rearrangements in the Netflix version made sense. It grouped all main characters from the trilogy together so the story flows better between books. BUT, what I HATED about the Netflix version is how much science has been damped down. It’s like for every scientific concept they took out they replaced it with an “F” bomb…

  • Almost everything is great about the show, but the one MAJOR complaint I have is that the visuals look soo bad. There is little to no inspired lighting and cinematographic choices. One of the main things I think audiences will need to get attached to a series, is indeed the visual language of it. Game of Thrones certainly had that. The new "The Gentlemen" show has it. Shogun has it. All I can remember from 3BP is just blank, dull greyness. I hope Netflix plans to up the cinematography game for Season 2 onwards.

    • I believe the grayness apart of that. When I look at this film I can tell things are heavily based on science and things of that nature. When I think of science in the way that these character speak and what not, I think of stone, lack of emotion and little color. The visuals work perfectly for this story. No flashy candy spectacles but the harsh reality at hand.

      @Lonelyeco@LonelyecoАй бұрын
    • Sometimes it is better to keep the lightning and color neutral instead of too stylised. I like films that the environment looks natural and realistic, just like our daily life. Not all images need to look dark or fantastical.

  • The Oxford characters were all likeable...except Auggie. Most unlikeable character though was Ye Wenje...talk about hubris...

    @willzsportscards@willzsportscardsАй бұрын
    • I'll agree. Auggie comes off as selfish and immature even tho she calls Saul immature. He is in a sense, but she is amplified in my opinion. Wenji irked me, I understood her anger but she was warned, BY THEM, and still chose destruction. To not believe in God, but worship the aliens was hypocritical to me.

      @Lonelyeco@LonelyecoАй бұрын
    • @@Lonelyeco yup. I've known people like Auggie, a bit too self-righteous and caustic. Can't put my finger on it. And yeah Wenje needed a lession in humility. Too bad it came the hard way! Anyway, most of the characters are quite likeable, and I was surprised by how well they characters were developed. Will was my fave.

      @willzsportscards@willzsportscardsАй бұрын
    • Yeah Auggie rubs me in the wrong way. But the thing about Ye Wenjie at the time she thought it was the best for humanity even though she was warned about the consequences. Silent Spring was a scary book at the time. Look how it's all starting to slowly become reality. We've had 60 years to sort ourselves out and we still persist with the same short term goals of profit and constant growth to the detriment of the planet.

    • @@willzsportscards Will seemed to represent the normal human down to earth side of the group balancing out the overachievers with his teaching job. He was my favourite and his story was the most emotional. A dose of reality.

      @antonycharnock2993@antonycharnock2993Ай бұрын
    • Ye Wenjie is designed to be an unliveable character. Her past traumas has made her lost trust in humanity. She falsely believed that the aliens are better beings, only realising her mistake after what is revealed in the “You’re bugs” scenes.

  • Loved the show except for the cinematography, that really lacks style and elegance, and the casting for Auggie: she is obviously a supermodel, she looks nothing like a scientist or any of the other members of the cast, it’s like Denise Richards in James Bond, I mean come on man… 😂

    @ArmandE@ArmandEАй бұрын
  • They have changed too many things, it's the usual story of "friends saving the world", it no longer has that sense of science fiction like the original novel. I don't like it😢😢😢

    • I like that they fleshed out the characters. The Cixin Liu trilogy had some great concepts, but it was a boring slog with boring characters and a parochial, soulless, Chinese view of history and the human spirit. The Chinese adaptation was a thirty episode, boring, hyper-censored slog with no characters or pacing. The Netflix adaptation is much better; takes the great concepts of the trilogy without all the dry, boring nothingness of the Chinese original.

    • I’m tired of these whitewash blackwash debate. Have you seen the Japanese movie called Roman Bath? They used Japanese actors to portray Roman soldiers. The whole story is Japan-centric. Is that yellowash then? I don’t care and I like that movie very much. It’s the funniest movie I’ve ever watched. I’ve also watched Chinese dramas that portrayed Chinese as heros and Americans as villains, but it’s such a bad movie that I can’t even remember its name and switched it off. What matter most is the content, not their skin colours.
