What Happened to the Old German Flag?
Today, German football fans proudly daub their cheeks black, red and gold, though back in the days of the Old German Empire, the tricolour was one of black, white and red. So why did the flag change from the one to the other, and what's the origin of both of these flags?

He didn't die, that's the curiosity, it is mere a kind of deep sleep, waiting to be used again when the sons flag will vanish from use. Which it will on occasion, because it represents today something the people believe to be a state, but which is merely a fragmentary state-like object, as it was invented to be by the Allies, commercially exploiting what is left of the German Reich of 1871. Which is constituted today, that's the hidden flaw, as a commercial company following tradelaw (Handelsrecht), while the Reich of 1871 is totally out of any activity. All it's predecessors were fragmentary state-like objects, because none of them, the Weimar Rep., Nazi Germany, the occupationzones after the war, GDR and FRG, as well as the reunited FRG after the reunification, have ever had a full constitution, voted for by the people, only some shady basic law (Grundgesetz), by this lacking the qualitiy of a full rightfully successor of the German Reich from 1871. By this a non-nation in essence, it is a shame and a flaw waiting to be corrected...likely out of tremendous pain, because all forces within and without Germany try very hard to keep this correction down, because all profit commercially from the FRG in one way or the other.
That is why Germany pays for all and everything, that is why the people are taxed up to the tits, that is why poverty is rising throughout Germany, why the EU was invented and so on... not as a peace project, but as a power project sucking out the lifeblood of the german people, after and in retaliation of the mess of the 20th century.

Sorry, but there are some huge mistakes in the video. The entity founded in 1816 was the German Confederation, and it didn't have a flag, only a coat of arms. (Which was similar to the old imperial coat of arms since the Confederation ("Deutscher Bund" in German) was some kind of replacement to the HRE). In 1848, the Confederation was disbanded in the wake of the March Revolution. The St. Paul's church assembly in Frankfurt then chose the Black-red-Gold flag as the symbol of the new german nation state it tried to establish. After the revolution had been crushed, the German Confederation was re-established in 1850. It was dissolved for good in 1866, when it's members turned on each other in the Austro-Prussian war. The Prussians THEN founded the North German Confederation ("Norddeutscher Bund") in 1866/67 to assure their dominance over the smaller northern states. Thre NGC then adopted the Black-White-Red flag. After the southern states (except for Austria, who's alienation to the german unification process had been the whole point of Prussias scheming) joined the NGC in 1871, it was transformed into the German Enpire, which kept the Black-White-Red flag. After that point, Black-Red-Gold was associated with liberalism and republicanism, while Black-White-Red was associated with conservatism and monarchism. No wonder that the Weimar Republic adopted Black-Red-Gold as it's flag in 1918/19 - and no wonder that the Nazis brought Black-White-Red back in 1933, keeping the old Imperial Flag for a few years to appease their conservative allies. The two new german states founded in 1949 adopted (no surprise) Black-Red-Gold, because they saw themselves as part of the democratic tradition - although the GDR was democratic only in name.
I thought so. Thank you. I unsubscribed to that channel.
He kind of just skipped over what happened in the revolution.
@@pierre976 Yes, that is a very poor video
And most importantly the flag of the BRD did never featured the eagle. There was no flag change in 1989. The Grundgesetz (German constitution) from 1949 states „Die Bundesflagge ist schwarz-rot-gold.“ which translates to „The federal flag is black-red-gold.“ The german flag with the eagle is only a symbol auf government institutions and it‘s still in use.

You didn't specifically mention it, but the Nazi flag having the same black-white-red colors as the German Empire flag was something I didn't know before. Thanks for showing them side-by-side for people to notice.

I love the meaning of the colours on the flag of my country. Through the darkness of servitude, Through the blood of battles, Into the golden light of freedom.
One veteran in my country interpret it in diffrent way. Black - color of their hearts Red - Blood of victims they killed during WW II Yellow - Gold they stolen during WW II
Lotnik Red is good
Thats not the meaning of the german flag tho. The idea that the german flag originated from the lützowerian freecorps is a widely spread myth. In actuallity the colors black, red, and gold, were strongly asociated with germany in the 19th cenutry due to the fact that these were the colors used by the HRE. And back then the HRE was something like a pseudo german empire and has been for centuries. We remember that in the 15th century italy has left the HRE, making it only consist of german states. So the black, red, and gold flag of germany is simply the flag of the HRE made into a tricolor.
@@rewjik7998 Belgium has the same colours
The richness of the earth/soil/forest/coal energy source, black; The vitality of its people, work energy and self-discipline, and the blood of Jesus the grace that overcomes and saves, red; Prosperity, productive economic engine and undeniable good results at rebuilding, plus the results of contributions to technology, chemistry, physics, philosophy, mathematics, music, etc, gold.
Those old illustrations are beautiful, do you have some info on them, or links?
I always love the classical music in the videos
Your pronunciation of German city names is so much better than what you normally hear on KZhead 😍 you even managed to say "Freichorps"! Props for that, dude. Very interesting video btw..
"Fun with Flags" Sheldon would be pleased
Most of them what he talking is shit. Bavarian flag is Blue and White, and not yellow and black.
Most of what's on TV shows is shit. So no real surprise.

Fun with flags! Excellent!
Indeed an interesting video. Maybe you can check some details: The first appearance of the combination black red and gold gold was on the black/coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire. Black eagle on a golden background plus some red details. In 1815 the German Federation was founded, not the north German. The Republic of Weimar still carried the name German empire. East and west Germany shared the same flag until 1969 I think. The GDR then put her coat of arms on the flag, the FRG kept the tricolor.
1:20 actually it was just the German Confederation. The North German Confederation was created much later by Bismarck
Germans get mad when u say "yellow" instead of "gold", I am german, I know that feeling, I once said "yellow" instead of "gold" (I mean the currect german flag)

@@kaiceecrane3884 : Back in the 1920's, "black-red-mustard" was an insult used by Germans of various political stripes who saw the Weimar Republic and its flag as illegitimate.
@@danielbishop1863 ahh, I see. That makes senses. Is that still true, that people call the color mustard for that purpose, because it does actually look like a mustard color
Germany is such a beautiful looking country that it sure deserves a pretty looking flag. So today's flag of Germany is perfect.

Why did they remove that propeller from the flag?
Correction: The Bundesrepublik always used the plain black, red and gold banner. The flag with the emblem you showed is and always has been reserved for governmental institutions and is called the "Bundesdienstflagge" (federal services flag). The escutcheon there also differs from the German coat of arms. You see German flags with the coat of arms for sale to private people, and that is not an official symbol, hence tolerated; it does look similar to the Bundesdienstflagge though, which is not to be flown by private entities.
Whenever a government changes the national flag/symbols with those of the dominant political party, you know you’re dealing with some serious hombres.
5:34 satisfied my boi !
If I heard that correctly, you said something about "Jena" in the video. However, the city of "Jena" is not in the south. ;-)
The German “Bundesdienstflagge” (federal service flag, the one with the government coat of arms) is not the same as the Bundesflagge (federal flag), and is _still in use today_, but it should normally only be used by the government itself. Misuse can be punished as an administrative offense, although some exceptions are made, when it is clear that the flag could not possibly be mistaken for official government use and it was not being used offensively, such as by sports fans during events. While the government coat of arms provided a more clear contrast of a West German flag from the East German flag, West Germany _still even at that time_ expected civilians to generally only make use of the Black-Red-Gold flag, without the coat of arms. Essentially little has changed with regard to flag use by Germans in West Germany since the establishment of the flag in Article 22 of the Basic Law in 1949 as “schwarz-rot-gold” alone. Curious as well, from 1949-1959, East Germany also used the bare Black-Red-Gold flag.

Me as a German learning more about my country from a KZhead Video than in history lessons
✨ *Schulsystem* ✨

Do you not learn about your own history? I've been brought up in Britain and our history isn't exactly rays and sunshine, it's a bit like "there was this king, he died, then this bloke and a war. Then..... Empire bit, then the great world wars and we saved the world and did this and that". I love history it's only really since school that I've really learnt anything and that's mainly through things like KZhead and Wikipedia. Plus I like to talk about our history, but I always like to ask other nationalities about there history and culture.

One should always quote the old chancellor Bismarcks words on the whole flag issue : "Make it green-gold with a dancing couple on it, for all I care. Or use the flag of Mecklenburg-Strelitz."
