  • As a Ukrainian I need to add that Verka isn’t just a goofy one-time act, it’s a whole persona created by madly talented Andriy Danilko who used to be a stand up comedian, but one day transformed into a singing lady. Also he created a variety of coolest songs before and after Eurovision, which are widely known and listened to till this day. If there’s an announcement of her performing, the tickets would be sold out in minutes. Verka is Ukrainian Lady Gaga

    • @@osinnya he only changed the lyric after the invasion. It was never intended to mean "russia goodbye", and it was never changed due to any eurovision rules. In fact, he even had all sorts of differrent explanations for what the phrase meant back in the day, non of which being what you claim. As for russian language not being the language of russians.... perhaps. Yet I assure you, a lot of radical Ukranian folk are gonna strongly disagree with you on that one. The sole inclusion of russian language in this song points out that it was probably not meant to be an anti Russian statement, at least back when it was written.

That's the beauty of it - you never know if a country will send a heartfelt ballad or a dancing astronaut. 😂 It's all about the mood and the message they want to convey. • I'd say that Moldova would probably deserve the title of funniest contry at Eurovision. They already hit that spot flawlessly with their debut in 2005 and they've kinda specialised in this "subgenre" along the years. And the funniest thing of it all is that their "fun" entries have also been among their most succesful participations (so it's not only how frequently they do it but how actually good they are at it): 2005 (6th place), 2010 (Epic Sax Guy, undeserved 22nd), 2011 (12th), 2017 (again Epic Sax Guy and Moldova's highest place at Eurovision - 3rd), 2018 (10th) or 2022 (7th).

The words ':Lasha Tumbai' mean nothing but phonetically resemble 'Russia Goodbye' - the original lyric, which had to be changed because Eurovision is non-political. Since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Verka has reverted to the original lyric, including on his/her appearance at the 2023 Grand Final.

  • A lot of countries alternate between sillier entries and more serious songs, and both can do pretty well in Eurovision. The winning entry from 2007 is a pretty dramatic, Serbian language ballad with very impressive vocals. Eurovision can tilt in any direction any given year, which is part of what makes it so fun: one year it's a dramatic ballad, next year a high energy dance number, then some screaming rock music. But the thing all winners have in common is that they are usually extremely compelling and successful at doing what they aim for.

For German listeners it is particularly funny that in the verse she sings a kind of children's counting rhyme in German: "Sieben, sieben, alle lügen, sieben sieben, eins, zwei. Sieben, sieben, alle lügen, eins, zwei, drei" (2 times) and then: "Tanzen!" "Seven, seven, everyone is lying, seven seven, one, two. Today it is a show where you have to do the best and most of your 3 minutes to impress the public. If you are looking for the country that takes this more seriously than any other, it is Sweden.

  • Verka - The ROYALTY of Eurovision. :D It wasnt goofy from the beginning. Since Eurovision started in 1956 it was more serious and classy. All of that happened over time. No even in the 70s and 80s and even 90s you wont find as much goofy performances like in the famous 00s :) the 00s are full of it. But these days we have less of it but here and there we still get very fun performances. I personally miss more of the lighhearted stuff. Thats why I loved Moldova 2022. That was a true party. And the Accordion thing... the Ex-Yugoslav States also have a lot of accordion in our music. Mostly it tends to be more folk music, traditional stuff. In modern pop you wont find it as much. But without accordion no party ;)

  • Thanks for more Eurovision! There’s so much more goodness to come, both novelty and actually pretty amazing songs. Iceland 2020 (show didn’t happen for obvious reasons) and 2021 (same group) were really amazing songs. Hope you continue to love it 👍

  • in the early years the esc was very different, the participants sang in front of a live orchestra without dancers or flashy show lights and their song had to be written in their official national language, only after many many years this rule was removed (i think since '99 any country can sing any language now)

  • Many countries take it seriously and have never sent a joke entry but once in a while it’s lovely to have them in to mix it up ( as long as they don’t win cos the year after there will be 10 songs like it and it feeds the “ Eurovision is joke “ stigma . Hence why they brought back judges . Cos people tend to vote for them A LOT but when joke entries win then serious / big singers don’t go cos it will hurt their career . So there has to be a fine balance between joke and serious for the survival of Eurovision .
