The S is still the king, but it maintains it position by dominating in a whole new area : luxury in technology and software. It’s a powerhouse in intelligence and user experience, and you have to see it to understand it!
With this new w223 generation, the body uses more aluminium in the body in white, and less joins and more one piece structures to stop noise. It has more sound deadening too, and a worlds first new rear airbag system!
At 0.22cd, it’s almost the most aerodynamic car in the world, only beaten by the EV version of the car, the #MercedesBenz EQS. Pretty damn impressive for a “traditional” shaped car.
E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL active suspension offers more driving comfort and agility. It works with the air suspension, regulating spring and damper on each wheel 1000 times per second. But of far more importance is the safety feature: if the car detects a side on collision, it raises car in case of t-bone so the impact is on the bottom!
There’s further tech in your day to day driving too. The front lights feature Digital light- 1.3 million micro mirrors, and 2.6 million pixels! With the ability to show projections on the road. Rear wheel steering is an option too up to 10 degrees, reducing wheel base by 2 meters!
The interior and its UI is where the car wins though, with the insanely advanced MBUX Operating System that helps take the experience of driving the new S-Class to levels the rivals can’t get close to. The advanced ambient lighting is not just about making the interior pretty, it interacts with you via the Voice Assistant, with safety alerts like blind spot and collision detection and much more! The Heads up display is huge, with a projection size of a 77 inch monitor, paired with the hugely customisable driver zone with 3-D screen makes for an amazing experience.
As #mercedes choice of engines, today we are testing the two most popular ones back to back, first the diesel! The S400d has 326BHP, a huge 700NM and 0-60 of 5.4.
And then the new 500, which instead of being a V8, is now a advanced in-line six engine with hybrid technology, as we have seen in the 53 AMG‘s recently! This has 435BHP, 520NM and a 0-60 of 4.9.
There’s also a bigger hybrid version with a huge battery: S580e with 510bhp, 750nm and over 100km ev mode range!
But which one is the better car? And does it really have that much more advanced technology versus its rivals, to maintain its position as the king? Watch and let me know what you think of my verdict!
Up next on on RBR is the new Golf GTI, the S580 Maybach V12 and MUCH MUCH More!! Subscribe to support us and see them first. :)

    • Ten degree rear-wheel steering, in the UK?? Really? I suspect the reason you've not driven one, with that option, is that it's not available in a right-hand drive car. Please check this. It's almost a deal breaker, in terms of making this a daily driver. Tragic, given all the other features (and the lack of a comfortable top-end alternative, since they exited the luxury Coupe market).

  • Finally someone who understands that high quality materials and a premium feel of the hardware are only one part of the puzzle to obtaining that „luxury“ branding! Metal buttons and Nappa leather only get you so far, but when I actually interact with the car‘s technology, I don’t want to be feeling like I’m using something that could be running Windows 98. I want it to feel just as cutting-edge as an iPhone or a modern TV. I want to control things with my voice, just like I do at home, I want big screens, just like I have at home. The car is the famous „third space“ in my life, and it shouldn’t feel years behind the others. That‘s what I always disliked about Rolls Royce for example. Just feels outdated. I think we have been holding cars to a different standard than other tech for too long. If you wouldn’t like the UX on your Computer or in your home, there‘s no excuse for having it in your car!

In fact, it was pretty annoyingly loud for being the "quietest car in its class", and I found both the 7 Series (Pre facelift) and A8 (Facelift, old model) to be noticeably quieter than the previous S-Class. Edit: At higher speeds of course, talking 130/140km/h+. The S I tried was on 17s, the rivals on 20s.

    • @@tcaudiobooks737 It's been the same narrative for years, S-Class is always a step ahead, this that, just copy/paste. I just don't see it. Especially this new one, it trades luxury for piano black plastics everywhere and tech, it's missing the class of the previous generation. The A8 pulls off the modern technology and luxury blend nicely, this misses the mark completely for me, like it's trying too hard.

    • Um…. It depends on which merc you are getting in.. also and what kind of extra package is ordered from the customer… 95% of the c-class owners aren‘t getting the leather expansion package. In this package every piece of „shiny plastic“ is in Nappa leather and can even be ordered with contrast stitching. And for example the „shiny plastic“ in the middle console (the black one) here is not plastic. It‘s actually piano trimm which is used in the black grand pianos…. A mess with fingerprints but it‘s NOT plastic…

  • Aesthetically, I still prefer the previous generation. The facelift V222 is, in my opinion, one of the best looking cars Mercedes has ever built. While I accept that the new car may be better in many ways (I do like the new tech), I dislike the revised styling, and I strongly dislike capacitive buttons, and gloss black finishes anywhere in the cabin, let alone in an S-class. That massive centre console should be trimmed in wood, not gloss black, and those seat controls are a pain. What was wrong with the way it was before, where you actually move the buttons in the way you want to seat to move? What's wrong with actual buttons that you can press, made of classy brushed aluminium? It was intuitive, and logical! Quite frankly, I think Mercedes designers have lost the plot. The new Rolls-Royce Ghost is the perfect example of how to make a car that's ultra modern and contemporary, yet still looks and feels like a Rolls-Royce should.

Both gens redefine its era of cars and W222 was the first Mercedes to go head to head with Bentley and Rolls Royce. Then 4 (!!!) simultaneous error messages. Multiple knocking sounds. Overall, $189k car has been in the shop with 10 different issues for about 70 days. Customer service from MBUSA is truly disgusting. Ignoring multiple calls and messages and multiple emails. Asked them multiple times to take car back and they refused. Have to go thru lemon process to get rid off this piece of junk. Never offered apology or any sort of mediation for the experience. How in the world they are allowed to sell products they cannot support is beyond me.

  • As a previous S-Class owner (I’ve had three of them) this does nothing for me at all. The design is really bland and the interior does not feel substantial enough. I don’t like touchscreens anyway so I’m probably a bad example but the sheer presence of the previous gens has now gone, and that’s been the way for the last few years.

  • It seems hard for Mercedes to handle software. They were first to introduce a smart key, but then ... fall behind of competitors, especially Tesla. So currently I see some mix of Android and a cow.

  • All these features- side impact where it lifts the car on that side and rear wheel steering etc Audi A8 had since many many years Amazing feature but you make sound like Merc are first to have safety features Need you to review the A8 and tell us the different as according to most other reviewers the Audi A8 is much more comfortable and absorbs bumps better than this and 7 series

  • There's still plenty of shit boxes 11:00 kicking around. No excuse for cars today, to last under 300k, and at the least 250k on a atx. Mercedes with basic maintenance get between 300k - 500k miles before any major problems. For some reason BMWs still leak oil everywhere and Audi's are still lagging behind in reliability, and are one of the hardest brands to work on. Honda and Mercedes are the 2 easiest brands to work on imo. If Lexus could fix there trash ride quality, I'd put them over Mercedes as having the best full size sedan. 1. Merc. (high reliability, highest ride) 2. BMW (high reliability, high ride) 3. Audi (avg. reliability, high ride) 4. Lexus (highest reliability, avg. ride)
