  • I completely agree with you about the new S-class. Regardless of whether it's actually a better car or not, as some people claim it is, aesthetically I don't love it like I did the W222, especially the facelifted W222 that you had. Personally, I get far too attached to my cars to contemplate selling after only a few years, I'd buy new then run it at least 10 years or until it has been fully depreciated, so depreciation won't be a factor.

    • Yeah the new model looks better from any angle. Mercedes really did a great job on the W223. I never was much into Mercedes but I have to damit, that nearly every new car by them is very good looking and really draws my attention. That wasn't always the case especially not since the late 90ies. We got some very bad looking Mercedes over time but nowadays is a different story.

  • My first experience with an S class was in 7th grade, a friends drove us to the roller rink in an 420 SEL, W126 I was amazed at how big the back seat was and how rich the black paint looked with the gulideck wheels and the rich tan leather interior. I also remember her mother complaining that the car had to go back for a blown cylinder. Fast forward maybe 25 years and I got my own s class, an s430, w220 was a great car. I loved the features the driving performance was excellent. A torque converter was replaced at 43k under warranty, but no other issues. The car currently has 140k miles on it and it’s flawless. Now I have a w222 and that is an amazing heavy fast car that is a dream to drive. Other than small random repairs, the car is reliable and the twin turbo is very smooth. Once you have an s class you really can’t drive another car.

  • Totally agree with you. People often underestimate the S-class. Each model is the next gen of car design so you don’t need to replace them too often as they’re already so far ahead. Rolls and Bentley have some great interiors but here in the UK they’re easily twice the price of an s-class but they’re not even close to being twice the car in terms of features, performance or comfort.

    @mohammadcheema7375@mohammadcheema7375 Жыл бұрын
    • Rolls Royce and Bentley are worth more than even the most expensive Mercedes models, the AMG versions, because of the history record of the car makers. Mercedes makes cars of all types, ranging from the A-Class as city car, then we have the C-Class as "average" car, then the E-Class as high-end executive car, up to the S-Class as flagship car. Not to mention the SUVs like the G, GLE and GLS, and in particular sport-focused cars like the CLS the SL and the AMG GT. And all these cars are built on assembly line, which makes the production faster and more practical. Rolls Royce and Bentley always and only made high-end, luxurious cars like the Phantom, Ghost and Cullinan for the first, and Continental, Flying Spur and Bentayga for the second. And these cars all hand-built, which makes leads to the production of less examples for a higher price.

      @CarspottingInToronto@CarspottingInToronto Жыл бұрын
    • @@Havok1199 I see your point about exclusivity but let’s be clear - neither Rolls or Bentley are truly hand built as they once were. In fact the Rolls engines come to the factory having been made by BMW in Germany. Likewise, most Bentley models are based on Audi platforms. The Bentley Bentayga is just a fancy Audi Q7. And if you want to talk about history then it’s important to remember that almost every single technical feature on a new Rolls or Bentley was seen on the S-class first. For example Rolls and Bentley only got fuel injection in the mid 80’s! They only got Airbags in the 90’s. Where’s the s-class could have fuel injection in the 60’s and a drivers airbag in the late 70s. So I say again, the S-class is just a better car. Admittedly it’s not so exclusive but that doesn’t bother me.

      @mohammadcheema7375@mohammadcheema7375 Жыл бұрын
    • @@mohammadcheema7375 Yes it’s true that, being subsidiaries of German companies (Rolls Royce owned by BMW, Bentley owned by VW), they’re not the same thing like when they were both owned by Vickers. So the point of being handbuilt and/or being produced in fewer examples, compared to other makers, doesn’t count anymore. However, it’s all about pedigree, in other words what I told you before about going for exclusivity. It’s like the same thing of why someone is more likely to shop at Gucci rather than Bikkembergs for example. It’s not even about having a luxurious car, some people buy Rolls and/or Bentleys just for the logo slapped on the grille, as way to elevate their “caste”, so they can scream to the world that they’re not just rich, they’ve become someone important in society. It’s simply the textbook definition of status symbol.

I own two E class Diesels, and there is also an S 350 Bluetec diesel that was on sale until 2013, and they have been the most reliable cars I ever owned, so much as to worry that if I switch to a gas S class it may have problems, like my old 740iL used to have (owned a '9 from 2005 to 2017 or so)

    • @@p2p104 I bought a 320 CDI Bluetec 2007 in Oct 2016 to ship to my summer home in Greece, where diesel was much cheaper than gas, and also for added passive and active safety, luxury etc. Then I thought the black interior would get too warm there in the summer, so I kept it in the US, and in April 2017 I got a white 2008 same engined 320 Blutetc with beige interior and shipped that one. Those two were my only cars since then. I considered the 250, but this is a later model, it would cost me, with less miles, twice what I paid, or what I paid for both of them. But the 250, if you do a lot of miles, has OUTSTANDING Highway MPG. I only get 32-35 with my 3 liter turbodiesel, but that has a 2.1 lt with MUCH better economy, maybe 45 MPG. If you use Imperial gallon, add 20% to the MPG!

There’s no denying that the W223 is absolutely brilliant car, but in my opinion, it didn’t really justify the $30,000 price difference between it and the W222 2020 S560 AMG line that I was looking at. I really glad I chose the W222 because it’s the S Class that I’ve come to love as my favorite car. Have had the car a rear now, best car we will probably ever own. • We have a couple of S-classes as taxis here in Finland. 2015 S350dL, S560eL, 2022 EQS450+, 2023 EQS450+, 2023 EQS SUV450+ (coming in April 2023) all have executive massage backseats S350dL is really the best one out of these, has the best ride (due to the others having AMG package) comfort is amazing. Great reliability due to being a diesel and good fuel mileage with quite decent power. Only downside are the looks of the pre-facelift W222. 250k miles and has had nothing but regular maintenance. S560eL is the best looking in my opinion, pinnacle S-class looks wise for me. Tech is just a bit lacking its almost the same as the older S350dL I mean a 2020 car with that nice big screen and no touchscreen? geez. Comfort is a bit worse due to the AMG package but still amazing. Has been really reliable now has 110k miles (in 2 years of us having it) no issues. And hybrid makes it fast with a fair fuel mileage. EQS450+ is an interesting car. Tech wise its amazing and the EQ is pretty good for what's available now. BUT... the interior size isn't there, I'm 6'4 and can drive both S-classes without ever moving my seat forward for customers no matter how big they are but on the EQS I have to constantly adjust my seat and the seats are not nearly as comfortable as the S-class seats. Has had a fair bit of smaller electrical issues etc. backseat massage not working, shutting off for no reason (happened 4 times in 55k miles). Love S-class. For the price its the best and most comfortable cars for the price (we bought them around 1 year old except the EQS's) 7 series doesn't come close comfort wise. We will get the W223 s580eL just because of the much improved hybrid tech and replace the w222. Will be interesting to drive the W223 but I will always love the W222 FL looks.

Mercedes has historically carried the design language of their cars through the entire current generation, but I agree that the W223 is perhaps the most dramatic streamlining of their current-generation corporate design. It is also a polarising style, which is actually entirely valid and I can’t argue that point - if you don’t inherently like it, you can’t help that.

Then I switched to the S550 coupé with almost all options including sky magic roof, night vision, exclusive passion interior, high end stereo etc and unless you have a S class, the E class cannot compare with the standard and options ( rear defroster is almost invisible, dual pain windows, everything is in duplicate ( like AC sensor not only in the front dash, but rear parcel shelf, soft close doors, etc). MB in Canada are much more. Even the options, Sky magic is $5000 versus $2500 in the US. My car here was over $180k plus taxes. Payments would be $3000 a month with a sizeable deposit! I would not change from an S class ( if I can afford too). And your S class (V6) does not have all the features of the V8. If the price was cheaper, maybe you would like the new S class. Unfortunately the coupé and convertible are gone, they were too expensive but the coupé will be a future classic!

  • I understand what you’re talking about when you were saying that you don’t like the fact that the S class looks a lot like the smaller cars. I just recently took a look inside the new C class after already having looked at the newer a class. I’m fairly certain the E class is going to be the car choice since the S class is too big and too expensive for most people. I will say that where Mercedes is correct is that they have made the owner experience of the lower models phenomenal because as long as you have the main features that you would have in the S class you feel as if you’ve gotten more for your money. The one thing that annoys me about Mercedes is that heated and cooled seats are not standard. The cooled seat function is $500 more. It might as well just build into the price of the car and include it in every single car. When you’re spending $50,000 or more on one of these low end cars I would expect that all of these features be included.

  • I've never owned a Euro car, had a couple Toyota's, but mostly U.S. cars and trucks. My oldest kid bought his first car recently, a 2003 S500 4 Matic! Tried talking him out of buying, but it's decent and was only $3,500. He's away at school but only on a driving permit so I'm helping square away some issues, like getting a working sun visor, etc., with the car here at home yet. Biggest thing is that it "chugs" at low speed sharp turns, feeling like the front tires are trying to grip too much. I live in a small Northern WI town and we now have an import shop but he has no alignment rack. So I take it to my Tires Plus 3 blocks away and dropped it off yesterday, they call today to say they can't align it (before worrying about the front drive shaft, sensors, etc.,) because they don't have the program for the specs!! Between the age of the car and the fact that everything here is a rusty F150, they're not gonna invest in a $20,000 - $50,000 M-B Program. Nearest foreign shop is in Duluth, MN but I'd need a friend to shuttle me there and back. This makes me realize that while you can buy an old luxury car for cheap, you have to think about things like this! (and parts availability) As for the Benz, I have a 2004 Seville and a 2006 STS and the kid's S - Class is just too big for me - I would want an E - Class. Love the Cruise Control, though.

S560 takes it to the different level. I have determined that S class isn't aiming to compete against A8L and 7 series, it tries to be on Flying Spur, RR Ghost type of vehicle. Kind of affordable but with all the luxury features. But new 2022 S class is an enlarged Honda Civic and CLA mix. Will save up for Ghost or Culinan!

  • I own a 2018 S450 and agree with everything you've said. That design is what I am going to call the "sweet spot" for the S Class. The new ones are going to be a technical nightmare with their rear-wheel steering and plethora of useless convenience features. The instrument cluster is as awkwardly placed and styled as that of a Tesla. Also, I'm close to retirement and am afraid of the potential reliability issues I'd face with a new one. If I really wanted to continue driving an S Class I'd just bite the bullet and go the lease route. Thanks for a great video.

    • That’s a weird statement to make about a new S class potentially being a “technical nightmare”. The S class has always been a leader and early adopter in new tech every single generation, and yours isn’t an exception either as it ages. The last simple S class was the W126.

  • This question of "comfort" is strange...I have a new Corolla..i find it to be perfectly comfortable...can go on long drives..no problem. And the car is bullet proof and i like the fact that it isn't complex and filled with doo dads. I've had all the brands over the years including big/expensive and have decided Toyota is the best for me because i really hate having to take a car to the dealer for repairs or frequent scheduled maintenance. I don't even like the hassle of changing cars every few years..every ten years is perfect. Just want a reliable car that i don't need to spend a week having to learn all the complex options, dash board, infotainment stuff. I don't even use the few options that's on my Corolla, ie; cruise buttons on the wheel. Lowest model Corolla with the 6 speed manual. Perfect. Small steel 15 or 16 inch wheels means inexpensive tires. Cars now a days all have these ridiculously over sized wheels with wide 19 and 20 inch low profile type tires = expensive and bad ride quality. And if the car has all wheel drive you need to replace all the tires if just one gets ruined after all tires have some wear...or so i've been told is the case with Subarus. I live in snowy icy north eastern North America and have never been let down by 2 wheel drive with snow tires. The Mercedes is handsome ...but i don't fetishize cars and could care less if passer-bys think i'm rich or poor. My self worth is not tied to objects.

  • Thanks for your owner review. Something good to add here. Mercedes has invented nearly every safety feature in any car today. The develop it, patent it and then open it to all manufacturers. Of course, the S class gets new safety features first. So you can assume you're in the safest car on the road in this thing. Depreciation and maintenance go hand in hand. Because maintenance on average becomes a nightmare with used S Class cars, it depreciates like crazy. So a 5 year old one goes for half what it cost new. I'm wondering if you've driven to compare a Lexus LS. These are known for a couple things. After 5 years, it'll sell for 90% of what you bought it for. And you'll realize that it's never been back to the dealer for anything but oil changes. I'd like to see if you've driven one and get your thoughts on it. Also on your monthly costs, a new S class is going to have the added dealer markup skyrocketing the price. And now, in October, interest rates are 3 times what they were back in January. So someone leasing is going to get creamed with these added costs. These will both subside in time. Doesn't help you today, but in a year or 2, things will be cheaper.

When BMW's and Audi's try add comfort and luxury to their vehicles, the driving experience becomes detached, whereas Mercedes Airmatic suspension adds both comfort and engagement. I know the E550 is not a S-class, but it is a mini S-class due to having the same engine and air suspension.

I bought the cars' as off lease vehicles as Certified Mercedes Pre-owned with the balance of the original owners warrantee plus a 12 month Mercedes warrantee. Typically a 2 to 3 year old S class pre-owned with 25 to 40K miles sells for about a 50% of the original MSRP. The depreciation is a problem for the original owner but an asset for the second owner.

This is back when there was a big difference in comfort, reliability and offering between a, let’s say, a 1990 W124 and a 1990 Passat. Today, that’s not the case anymore as car manufacturers have narrowed the gap when it comes to offerings. As for the S-Class, the first thing I think of when I see one in NYC is that the guy driving it drives for a living, unless he looks like he’s 80yrs old. It never makes me think that he has money or has achieved any success. Same for the Escalades and Yukons out there. The only expensive Benz that will make me think that the person driving it has got money to waste is when I see a G Wagon. You gotta have money or big issues in the head to waste money on something such as a new G Wagon.
