“God killed one of the greatest presidents so I can be a shit president”
If it weren't for a massive ongoing propaganda campaign, Lincoln would be remembered as a monster. He started an unnecessary war that killed 700,000 Americans, destroyed the Constitutional Republic and replaced it with a military empire. And the myth of him freeing the slaves is just that, because the emancipation proclamation only pertained to slaves who were in southern states that were still in rebellion, but not states loyal to the union or returned to it. It's just a shame that John Wilkes Boothe didn't get to him several years earlier.
I know it’s been a century and a half but that still made me angry. Fuck Andrew Johnson.
Not just a shit president. He probably did the most lasting damage out of any president ever. His botching of reconstruction can be tied to most issues we have with race relations today.
Lincoln was a terrible person who should not be admired.

Grant was a sad case. He was known to go to his tent and weep after especially bloody days of fighting. He knew what he needed to do to win, but he went for his men when he thought they could not hear him
Grant actually had a positive kill ratio during the war. It was Lee who lost more of his own men then his army killed.
For a union general grant had the lowest casualty rate compared to everyone before him. Him being a butcher is just wartime propaganda

You forgot the part about how that guy was literally just a crazy person who Garfield had never even met (except maybe to shake his hand at a big meet 'n' greet type of deal)
They did meet before but it's unclear to me if Charles actually introducted himself to Andrew.
U.S Grant may have had a high casualty rate in the overland campaign, but overall he inflicted WAY more casualties (percentage wise) on his enemy than he received (something like 18% vs 22%)
4% is not WAY more
@EvanWerewolf it's like ten of thousands of lives, so 4% is pretty big
Grant lost about double what the confederates did in the overland campaign
He did not inflict more casualties on the enemy. He inflicted far fewer. What he did do was cause the enemy (who had a much smaller army) to suffer a higher percentage rate of casualties than he suffered in his larger army. Grant suffered 50,000 casualties in the overland campaign out of his 120,000 troops while Lee suffered 30,000 casualties out of his 60,000
The reason his casualty rates were so high in the first place was because the American Civil War was a war decided by numbers.
Grant being given an unfair reputation as a butcher in the CivilWar is very ironic as he hated blood and killing animals.
Lee also had more casualities lol
@@shirothr5384Lee was also fighting for longer, and in larger battles than Grant up until Lincoln realized he was his only competent general, and he was only really considered because of his high casualty rate
@@salamilidontfit He was considered because of his great victories at Shiloh and Vicksburg, which cut the Confederacy in two. Grant was an amazing general, while Lee needlessly threw away his men that he couldn't waste.
@rappinronniereagan7156 Not only that, but statistically, Lee had a higher percentage of casualties under his command than Grant did. Grant was called a butcher because of the men he lost while fighting Lee, who had entrenched his army, and Grant was on the attacking side, which generally has more casualties than defenders. So the fact that Grant has less of a percentage of casualties than Lee says that Grant knew how to use his numbers to its full effectiveness. Lee, however, could not.
Welcome to The Lost Cause; thanks to Lincoln's unfortunate choice of VP, the losers inexplicably got to write history. It's kind of amazing he (Johnson) was not removed from office immediately. Grant was a shitty president but a more than competent General, and one who realized the kind of war he was fighting as opposed to all of the confederates trying to go for Napoleonic tactics.
I wonder if Grant had some form of PTSD, considering not much research was put into that kind of thing until after the Great War.
Grants hatred of blood extended to the point where he had to eat all his meat practically charred
So I'm related to Grant but definitely do not have the same preference for how meat is cooked then 😂
@@connorlambfurlotteI’m grant’s dad
Pro tip: if a presidential candidate tells you that God wants him to be president, he's not gonna be a great president
Certified Grant classic
Lee had more war dead and a lower KD than Grant even though Lee had a smaller reserve of men. The "Grant is a butcher" myth was made up by the lost cause to explain how their armies were defeated by "Hordes of immigrants and conscripted children" as they argued that grant had simply thrown his armies to the meat grinder that was his grueling campaigns
Growing up in the South in the 80's, I think my class caught the tail end of Lost Cause history. I remember being told that the Civil War was fought primarily over states' rights, not slavery.

Funny enough my US history class went over James A Garfield a while back if I remember correctly his death led to the Pendleton act ending the spoils system
Its ironic Hayes was afraid of assassination but then the next President, Garfield, got assassinated
Grant did possess high casualty rates, however contrary to popular belief, he didn’t have the highest in the civil war. Robert E. Lee actually beats him by a couple percentage points. Also, at the battle of Shiloh he solemnly remarked that “you could walk across the battlefield on dead bodies without a foot touching the ground”(paraphrased). Grant honestly hated the war and how many people died for it to end.
Chester A Arthur is my favorite president. Dude was a total product of political corruption, graft, and nepotism who immediately signed the Civil Service Act which drastically reduced political corruption, graft, and nepotism. Note I said “drastically reduce” not “remove”. Yes it still exists and yes it was often much worse before.

To be fair, the guy that killed Garfield was insane.
Ideas for Part 5: 1. Grover Cleveland was first named “Steven” and then he started to be named “Grover” 2. Benjamin Harrison was the first and only Grandson president 3. Grover Cleveland was being us president 2 times because he was bragging about his win in the 1892 us election 4. William McKinley was the first us president to drive a car to the White House 5. Teddy Roosevelt was the youngest president because of the assassination of William McKinley

The person who assassinated James actually bought a more expensive firearm because he thought it would look better in a museum.
He wanted to one up John Wilkes booth
Grant actually had fairly low casualties overall but that stigma is because of the disastrous battle of Cold Harbor and the Crater. Which were genuine mess-ups but were one of the few times he screwed up. Otherwise he was fairly good, even innovative general given his victories at Forts Henry and Donnelson, the capture of Vicksburg, and ending the war. The Overland campaign was a bloody nasty affair but were necessary in hastening the end of the war and grinding the Rebels down via attrition. Also typically it is the attacker who takes more casualties, as in battles where the Union was on the defensive the Confederates took more casualties such as at Gettysburg or Chancellorsville(which they won but at a high cost).

Just fyi, the one about grant being squeamish around blood is true. But the part about him having a reputation for high casualties was (mostly) slander concocted by his political opponents.
