Scientists in New Zealand are optimistic about the future of the rare kakapo - known as the world’s fattest parrots - after the birds notched up a record-breaking breeding season.
At least 75 kakapo chicks hatched and are expected to survive this year.
Adults of the critically endangered species only mate every two to four years.
Researchers are aware of only 147 adult kakapos in the wild and have been monitoring their movements using radio transmitters attached to their bodies.

My thoughts "it cant be that fat" First scene. The jiggling
The kakapo is actually attempting to mate with the hand with that jiggling
Master Debater That explains why they're on verge of extinction, when you try to mate with anything but the female counterpart.
This birds raging hormones are like a teenager!!!
@@AmongUs-mb4qx they're on verge of extinction because of us, humans :))))
@@WalWanderer best comment!! LOL
So so bizarrely cute ! It's like owl x kiwi x parrot x chicken !!

Perfect way to describe it actually!

How tf do you misspell Avocado like that
😂
Those kakapoes are so cute.
Ironically it was one the top 3 nominations to become the world's ugliest animal.
Yeah so cute but so few of them left..
Not due to climate change at all. It was due to feral animals such as rats, cats etc. These have been cleaned up now on two islands and they are now doing very well. A truly unique parrot.
Heard they are doing a major culling and to eliminate all non native species as in rats, and cats. Forgot what year they are so post to finish. Remember they did this to goats too
For cats i can say yeah that possible, but how they cleaned rats?
@@reieben886 poison, traps.
Kakapo onle mates in 2-4 year? Ok. This guy is officially my spirit animal
Remove the - , and you have MY spirit animal

They live up to 90 years
They mate with anything green and moving, like a bbc cameramen wearing a green t-shirt
Glad to see and hear one of our native birds thrived a bit this year Edit: They are flightless owl parrots
WE WILL NOT LET THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES GO EXTINCT!!!!!!!
Well said!
I agree with you
They will mate with literally anything if they can't find a mate
@@DD-kc6hg NO.. THEY ARE TO CHONKY TO DIE !!
YAS!!
In the beginning it was literally trying to mate with the hand
a rabbit amongst birds.
That truffle shuffle in the beginning of the video is definitely on point 😎.
I love birds. This one, though, has received a special place in my heart. It’s adorable, and I hope their numbers will grow, even though it sounds like it will be slowly. Every time I see a video of these birds, I smile.
Hope they will have lots of offsprings
Oh hi mak
They are thicc
Your missing some 'C's in there
Some would say it’s my spirit animal

All I can think is when i see this bird.........jiggling its belly and then singing *I am happy, jingle jingle*
The bird is mating in beginning of the video btw
When you feed budgie too much.
@@frenne_dilley meh they are bigger and harder to manage, but otherwise fine.
The KakapO is my favorite land parrot NZ.. I hope they do not fail at the attempts to keep them from going EXTINCT forever that would be absolutely devastating
Hopefully they make a comeback from being endangered. The world can’t lose such cuteness.
Why is that parrot doing the truffle shuffle?!
That's a VERY CHUBBY and CUTE PARROT
When I saw the thumbnail I just thought, "Hey isn't that the one parrot that tried to you know what the person with a green shirt in that one video from 2009?
I can’t get over this animal, it is way too cute!
Nobody: KZhead recommended: World fattest parrot

Soooo freakin' adorable! 🤗
Oh my gosh the birb is Soo cute😍
Bet the female kokapo's name is Karen
It’s so cute it I wish I could hold it on my arms and pet it
I was so happy hearing this! I’d love for kakapos to come back, but there will need some large rules to keep people away from them. I could see them getting into the pet trade, but it would be easy to get them out, because they are rare and would be pricy, pricy enough for like no one to buy them.
We don't need rules to keep them away. If the population grows to proper levels then it'll be fine.
i can't tell how cute and chuncky they are ^w^
haha, hes doing the "truffle shuffle" like that kid from goonies (or some other movie...i dont remember)
In philippines theres a place that endangered animals make more and fastest productivity. In china siberian tiger has a place for productive animal and then they release back to the wild place.
THIS IS SOOO CUTEEEE
Ah, this is the bird who can't fly and will try to mate with your head!
Cuties. Let’s save them.
that person's arm is going to have full of scratches and cuts. those claws are sharp

Real parrot have curves
Must protect these small little kids.
So when it was sitting on your hand there in the beginning...yeah he was about to blow his load. Though I'm sure you found out. I know this because similar behavior was seen by the BBC when one of their hosts was the fortunate recipient of one birds um....gratification.
Thats one kawai AF birb
They're like dodo birds
He attacc He protecc But most importantly He thicc as hecc
I want one!!
They're not fat they're cute
the first scene is so cute lol
So, you telling me the kakapoes, they just won't cack?
Kind of looks like a very large brown budgie :P
I love these cute fat avocados ❤
First time seeing this bird here.
What a cutie.
I never knew they were known for being the world's fattest parrots until this video.
They are not the fattest parrots, they are the heaviest. There is a difference. People who keep saying they are fat, make it sound like if they can lose weight they can fly. No. It doesn't work that way.
What a unit
