  • Tbh, I'd like to see a video that goes into depth on making the uvular R's(the ones made in the back, sometimes trilled and sometimes not, it's more dialectal), ch as in Ich(this one is harder for me and others), and ch as in auch(I got this one down but others will need it). This would be to help people get this one roadblock out of the way.

    • We will make a video about this one day as well. As a tip upfront: In Germany the "r" is not pronounced as uvular and hard as people think.... It's rather soft. In Switzerland it's often pronounced much harder and the way you mentioned. 🙂🇩🇪🇨🇭🙏

  • Vielen dank für das video. I think "I would like to have" or "I would like to be" doesn't do enough justice in translation. I think "I would like to have had" or "I would like to have been" does the job better. If that makes any sense?

    • Hi 👋 In this video all sentence with "hätten" and "wären" are both in present tense. So the translation is perfectly fine. The way you want to translate it would mean that it's past tense, which would look like this in German: Ich hätte gerne einen Hund "gehabt". Ich wäre gern in Deutschland "gewesen". Different grammar. 🙂👍🙏

  • I generally understood this well, but there's one thing you mentioned that I apparently don't know the rules for, that's bothered me a lot in German: When you end up with 3 or 4 verbs at the end of the sentence, like... , and if I read it, I can figure out the order of the words, but if I hear someone say it, I would need to stop and figure it out, because it's not obvious to me yet. The example you showed in the video is at 3:21 "Sie würden auch gern Gitarre spielen können". This was one of the easier examples I've seen, but what is this construction called, so I could find a video on it, or read more about this? Vielen Dank :)

    • Hi👋 I'm not sure if what I'm going to explain to you is what you are looking for but let's see: It's very rare that there are more than 2 verbs at the end. And it only happens when there are modalverbs involved. According to the sentence you mentioned, I think what you mean is "Konjunktiv 2 in der Vergangenheit" (past subjunctive): Ich wäre gern für ein Jahr in Deutschland geblieben. I would have liked to have stayed for one year in Germany. (Not sure if the translation is 100% correct) Als Kind hätte ich gern ein Fahrrad gehabt. Mit Modalverben: Ich hätte am Wochenende eigentlich arbeiten müssen. We didn't cover this topic yet. It's quite advanced grammar. In textbooks you will first be confronted with it in B2 level... and later pick-up again in C1. Really huge topic. I hope this helps you a bit. 🙂👍🙏

    • @@yourgermanteacher Yes, I think it's either modalverbs sending other verbs to the end, or we're inside a relative/subordinate clause, causing a whole bunch of verbs to pile up together. It seems like it would happen more during hypothetical situations, or as you put it, "wishes and dreams". In your reply to me, what I'm mainly talking about is your example "Ich hätte am Wochenende eigentlich arbeiten müssen." So in cases like these, is the modal verb pretty much always the one at the end? I think that's the rule I didn't know. Vielen Dank für deine Antwort!     • In subordinate clauses the conjugated verb is placed in last position, and in most sentences the modal verb is the one which is conjugated. As for the example in the hypothetical situation in "Konjunktiv 2", yes that's like you said. 🙂👍🙏 Ich wünsche dir auch ein frohes neues Jahr 🥳🎉🍀

    • Normally the context makes it clear how the verb needs to be conjugated. In the video it's the pictures. 😉👍🙏

  • Hallo Johannes. I am greatful for this video as these 3 words are not that easy to learn at the beginning of learning German. In your example "Sie .............. gern urlaub machen" you give the 2 choices: "wurden" wurdest and wurde. How do I know or how do one see / understand from this sentence that the "Sie" means "she" and not "they"? I know sie = she (singular) but Sie also = they (plural) Your second example "Sie ................... auch gern gitarre spielen konnen" also applies here, so the identification of "Sie" in both the sentences, being at the beginning of the sentence and both having the capital "S" makes it tricky. (I know that the verb in the conjugated form usually will indicate singular or plural form but in both the example sentences the verb is not there and we have to choose the correct verb. In the 1st example I selected "wurden" and not "wurde" as I read (understood) that the sentence was referring to "They would like to take a vacation" Oh, I did not look at the pictures in the examples to give me any hints. So, my problem I have with this is to identify the sentence as the subject being SINGULAR (she) and not plural (they) and that obviously impacts the choice or correct usage of the verb. Can you explain this? Or link a video where you address this or explain it, please?

    • Hallo Thomas, in the example sentences the choice between singular and plural is related to the pictures 🙂👍🙏 But without the pictures or some kind of context that makes clear what "sie" refers to, it is not possible to know if it is singular or plural.     • Besides wishes and dreams "Konjunktiv 2" can also be used to be very polite... e.g. "Wir würde gern bestellen." Depending on the situation "möchten" is more direct/straight forward e.g. Wir möchten bestellen. (But adding "gern" makes it polite. Besides this "möchten" is also used to express plans. Ich möchte ein Haus kaufen. (plan/intend) Ich würde gern ein h Haus kaufen. (wish/dream) 👍🙂🙏
