Law-Abiding Family of Swans Cross Road at Pedestrian Crossing

An adorable and law-abiding family of black swans and their baby swans have learned to cross the road at a pedestrian crossing in Maryborough a town in Victoria, Australia.
According to local resident Jan Allemand, the mom, dad and their four fluffy baby birds have become a regular sight around town as they go about their daily activities.
Allemand said the swans usually stroll through town on their way to the lake, and the cygnets sometimes stop to take a dip in puddles along the way.
In this video, the swan family is seen crossing the road with some help from locals while holding up traffic.

    • I can't really imagine that is an issue in Australia. It has so much space where humans don't live. Does roadkill really have an influence on the animalnpopulations there? I live in the netherlands where real wilderness doesn't exist anymore. I don't mean it as mocking you, I am just curious how roadkill is a problem there (never been to Australia)

Probably the simplest thing to do would be to google "road kill in Australia" you will find a number of articles about this topic come up. I hope that they will help explain the situation for you. If you go to my youtube channel you will find a video called "emma cares about birds" which may provide you with some more information, please take the time to read the video description also. • @@karentjuhh101 Hi again, I hope you don't mind me replying again, its just that your question was so important I took the time to ask a local wildlife rescue organisation about road kill/injury in their area (population 85 000 humans, over an area of 1,321 square kms farms, small communities and coastal villages), and they just got back to me, here is what they replied. In the 6 months (July 2018 to December 2018) they had call outs to help 2300 wild animals, of these 1100 were blunt trauma incidents which they attributed to road injuries. As a comparison, other traumas like flying into building windows were numbered at 50 animals). They told me this number of 1100 animals did not include the ones found dead on the road which they don't include in their statistics. They conservatively estimated that for each blunt trauma statistic there is another 9 more animals that died on impact which arn't included in their count. They said there is a lot of competition for living space between humans who want to live in the same places wildlife need to. Development and roads linking towns etc is a main cause of habitat loss and fragmentation. Thank you once again for your interest and all the best!

  • Great video! I remember way back in the 1980s one day I was driving in Holloway Rd. North London UK. A dog...a Border Collie walked along the sidewalk and stopped facing the street at a pedestrian crossing point just like this one. When the traffic had stopped in all directions, it crossed and all without the company of any humans. My guess is that in the past a handler had done it with this dog and over time the dog could now do it for itself!
