Russians learnt from their mistakes during Ukrainians successful counter offensive. They trained well their soldiers, they improved their tactics.
Ukraine never had any successful counter-offensive. If you are referring to Kharkiv, then russians withdraw from their intentionally and destroyed 7-8 ukrainians brigades in the process. Russian major miscalculation was to enter ukraine with only around 120k troops against 700k AFU with hopes to compel Zelya to sign NATO neutrality status and exit the conflict quickly.

I don't think it is the case of the Russians not want to encircle the Ukrainians. They did in the past and they would if they could. Because when encircled, there is no need to storm the area, they can wait for the defenders to surrender. There wouldn't be fight as you described. The fact is that Ukrainians withdraw when they see encirclement is close.

unfortunate that the us aid package comes this late, maybe this wouldn't have happened otherwise (but who knows, im not an expert)
I don't think it'll do anything. Shipping any new equipment will take 3 months at the earliest. It's basically just money to be given to Ukraine who passes it to defense contractors to start up new factories in the US to bring America up to war production levels. Remember, the US Cold War stocks are spent. In many ways, I think the US is in the same position as Russia was at the beginning of the war. It'll take the US just as long to stand up new production lines so we can start pumping out artillery shells in the hundreds of thousands, rather than a few thousand a month. This is on top of the new arms deals we've made with the rest of NATO in the last year. So it means more F-35's, more Abrams, and a total rearmament for the US Army so we can actually engage in a LSCO environment. By the time that all happens, I think Ukraine will have half their country lost and annexed. I've suspected for a long time that Russia is likely to stop at the Dnieper because it is a rough dividing line between the more pro-Russian east and the NATO aligned west. It also serves as a pretty large strategic obstacle for any counter attack that Ukraine may mount in the future. That said, I'm also a guy with limited military experience, no pull within the US government, and with no security clearance to actually see even a fraction of the big picture. But I think it is important to study this war since it is likely I'll be recalled to fight in something similar. Or one of my children will have to grow up and wage a war somewhere else that will be heavily influenced by this war.
Some of the aid pachage is for new weapons that will take years to appear in Ukraine according to the US. The timing really makes no difference. How could it? Ukraine has had over $200b already and they are losing. Why would a few billions more change anything?

Most of that aid package (part realy meant for Ukraine and not for US MIC) was already shipped there under the guise of nato exercise in eastern Europe. It just 1st quarter ended and they had to pay for it.
