Building and Testing a Lego-powered Submarine

Making a radio-controlled submarine with Lego and other materials.
At the end I test it in a lake. Enjoy!
The submarine specs:
Length: 22 cm (8.7 in)
Displacement: 1880 grams (66 oz)
Speed: 0.2 knots (10 cm/s)
Operating depth: 3 m (10 ft) - ballast tank will fail after that
Hull: 1.5 liter lemonade pitcher (Orthex)
Forward: Lego m-motor runs two 9-length propellers (2952)
Turn: Lego m-motor runs a geared-up (0.67:1) small 3-blade propeller (6041)
Ballast tank: Lego m-motor runs a Lego linear actuator connected to a 60 ml syringe (Eotia marinade injector). Active range 20 ml
Radio control: 27 MHz controller dissembled from a toy submarine (Zantec Mini RC U Boot). L298 H-bridge to drive motors
Power supply: 9V Lego battery box for the motors, 3.7V battery for the radio controller
The yellow toy submarine at 6:00 is this one: www.amazon.de/Zantec-Schiff-F...

  • It's a shame the ballast syringe couldn't overcome the pressure difference at the lake bottom. I hope you revisit this project. It was really cool

    • @@MrGlennJohnsen smaller piston, increased stroke. trouble is the lego actuator bottomed out so you'd need to double it up or so. possibly another motor and actuator on the other side of the syringe like you said would help.

      @krashd@krashd4 жыл бұрын
    • @@Jan_Heckmann Clearly there's not enough power because the water is pushing in on it and it's getting forced to the side. Both contribute. I'm speculating (without strong opinions) whether the jammed-sideways-ness might have a similar or greater exacerbating effect compared to the ~25 N needed to overcome water pressure. 25 N seems within the capabilities of that actuator, if it could just push straight.

    • That wasnt the issue. The problem was at that depth there was too much external pressure so the syringe couldn't eject water

      @ari90i@ari90i4 жыл бұрын
    • @@ari90i I know that, the duct tape is helping it stay in place. it's literally held down with duct-tape, otherwise it would've moved. I know the problem was the pressure was too high at the bottom of the lake, the single piston couldn't handle that, so that's why a 2nd one was needed. Guess what? to keep this rig in place, I'll say it again, duct-tape was used.

      @Kamilohbk@Kamilohbk4 жыл бұрын
    • Kamilohbk A second piston is needed to help empty the ballast syringe of water while at a depth where the pressure of the surrounding water is too much for a single piston to force the ballast syringe empty. As Thanos said, duck tape is needed to help secure this second piston to the ballast syringe.

  • Needs a bigger hull, and the ballast tank should use a geared screw drive to move the piston back and forth. Gearing the props and using ones with more pitch would also get better movement results, so if you ever do a v2 there's some things to look at.
