Man! the insights on this video are priceless 🔥
unlike the Puget rigs! $3700.00 on the low end. I understand, but damn - wish I could afford to drop that kinda cash right now; I sure would.
Thank you for being so honest, I have never seen a brand technician speak so transparently about the reality of their own products and those of the competition, congratulations.
This is one of THE most helpful computer discussion I've ever watched. A professional who actually knows the tools of the industry and understands that the use cases actually turn the whole build-decision process around; starting with storage for example. I have some questions about motherboard decisions -- audio choices, I/O requirements, etc., but I'm much more confident now making some decisions about my next rig. Thank you for this.
Casey! Absolutely fabulous my friend.... amazing video, incredible info needed by us all. Thank you for taking the time to do this.❤
Best 43 minutes spent on KZhead, that was very informative, thank you!
This landed at exactly the moment I am considering upgrading my graphics PC as I have recently moved from stills photography to video. Two vids in and I am starting to feel where the h/w limitations are! Fantastic information targeted exactly where it's needed for video creation, and some of it has gone straight to my hardware builder :) Thanks Casey and Puget-man
Golden Info!! Thanks Puget Systems for sharing your years of experience and thanks Casey for making this interview happen!
One of the best video I have seen for a long time. Answered all the questions about Davinci Resolve hardware I had and those I did not know I had. Pity that living in Sweden I can not buy from Puget but the wisdom I learned I can use when selecting my next system. Great video and thanks Casey to make it happen. :-)
Perfect timing (again) on this video! Just recently started looking at upgrading my tech, and along comes Casey. Thanks very much, so insightful, informative and entertaining. Keep it up!
i made the mistake of getting an average PC for editing a couple years ago, then learned so much and surpassed the capabilities it could handle for the jobs i do now. I built a monster PC and it has let me learn so much more. i recommend building a PC for where you want to be not where you are now, you will definitely learn alot with a faster pc.
"you will definitely learn alot with a faster pc." learn more because rig is faster? what a bu.. shits. What you had before ? pentium 4? Your whole comment is one big mistake. There is no need to buy "faster pc" than average PC to learn RDV from begginer to advanced level.
That's GREAT content guys... I was struggling to wrap my head around as to why my PC wasn't performing with DVR...I needed this, much appreciated !!!
This video is gold! Thanks Casey and Matt for breaking down the nuances of the hardware requirements.🙂
Great timing (for me) with this video! Thanks for making it 🙏
This video has needed to be made for years! Thanks Casey!
So glad I "cheaped out" on my new PC. Got pretty much everything you said to get for me as a general creator. Thank you for letting me know I made a good decision by not trying to throw more money at it and not getting much of a performance boost out of it.
This was actually incredibly helpful. Thank you!
Nice to hear expert advice from the system integrator. 😊
Oh man! Thanks a ton for making this video, it's really going to help millions of people around the world in deciding their hardware for content creation. Also thanks to Matt, a pure soul!❤❤ I love and appreciate the videos you put out here!❤❤ I have also started learning Resolve from your introductory courses! Always the best!👌👌
Wow. Thank you. This was a great interview. Well done.
I'm about to build my PC for filmmaking. This is absolutely fantastic. Thabk you so much.
Quality info, Casey. Puget will be top of mind for a future build.
Ty sir, i was waiting for this video
man this video just comes in the right time.
Casey, I believe I speak for all of us when I say you are now our Ambassador. It was extremely thoughtful of you to arrange this interview with Puget Systems of which I had never heard of. Thank you very much.
Glad you came out with this video. There are things I didn't know. Thank You Casey.
Thanks for this! Such a great, NO BS breakdown of how to make sure you're putting your money in the right place for the best performance.
Such nice timing Casey. I was about to build a PC for Davinci and you made this video. Thanks for all the information.
I love that this is in depth
Thank you so much to both of you!
I was looking for a video like this for long time. Now i got it thk u😃
This is a heavily underrated video, there's SO much useful information here. Thank you guys for making this!
Great discussion, thanks for sharing!
The 45 minutes flew by. Very interesting all the content, well explained for people like me who are starting in this. It is appreciated that companies like this, where prevails the right and meet customer expectations regardless of how much will be the cost of the sale. I am from Spain and although it may not seem like it, I don't speak much English. I use AI assisted translation so I trust I will not be misunderstood by a bad translation. I am still fighting for my goals but I still have a long way to go, however once I achieve them I will keep Puget Sistems in mind. Thank you Casey for passing this information on to us. Great as always. Best regards.
This alone is waaay better than any other general recommendation pages on how to spec a system for video editing.
Spectacular info. Thanks for sharing this.
If this video did anything for me, it proved that I did my research well before purchasing my desktop. I watched EVERYTHING I could, talked to EVERYONE I could…it comes down to doing your research. Thank you for this wonderful conversation with Puget
Very Cool video Casey! I'm one of the many nerds and KZhead introverts loving this content.
Thank you, Casey! Another awesome super helpful video. Upgrading tech this week. Now I know better what to buy.
Awesome video. Please repeat every year or two.
Amazing video! Thank you!
Super helpful! I unfortunately one of those people that just bought a laptop the new framework 16 and this video makes me cry a little bit. Also, you’re missing the card at the very end about your free resolve introduction. Absolutely love this video though. Thank you!
So honest and best insight , very very informative 👍
I started editing with a 2023 mac mini M2 with 8g ram. It did a decent job. I recently upgraded to a mac studio M2 with 32g ram and it runs amazingly on resolve studio.
One word - brilliant! Thank you so much Casey and Matt. Awesome stuff guys. Great content. Very practical and honest advice.
big thanks, this is gold!
Thank you, Casey. Very helpful.
As you said, this is one extremely enlightening video!
Fantastic video! Thanks
Thank you Casey.
First class interview. I wish I had this info when I had my system built
Thanks for this, very helpful!
Thanks man for this valuable info.🥰
Would've also loved to see benchmarks, specs for Fusion studio.
Bro, I've been scratching my head for months thinking about this and you just solved my problem, who to talk to, to buy a PC, I've been using Mac's since 2000, but I'm tired of Apple and their I want to stick it to you mentality. This will be my first PC ever, my only issue is, I have a feeling, arm processors are maybe the future. Need to call this guy's soon. Thanks!!
Love my system from Puget!
Absolutely amazing 👏 Thank you for making this video.
Awesome video!
Wow. Casey, great video! This will help a lot of people make the right choices for their budgets and needs. This video is what gold looks like on KZhead. I personally spent about 2 years saving up for and choosing a system, and I only recently pulled the trigger and got it. I was worried, but after this video, I am more assured I made the right choices, especially for my budget. And as Matt mentioned, to anyone who doesn't know: NEVER go for a cheap power supply!
Wow! very informative for a beginners.
Very interesting. Very educational. 👍
This video was super helpful, I've always brushed-off the idea of integrated graphics in the CPU thinking it made no difference if you had an nvidia Graphics card. Also, Puget Systems is about 6 minutes away from my house!! Do let me know next time you're in the area, you have been (and continue to be) my go-to for Resolve/Fusion training.
I'm running an 8700k with 1080ti and I was having slow down on my footage from the new Osmo Pocket 3, which was capturing 4k60 10bit. I thought about splurging on a new system for fun since mine is somewhat old. But a friend advised that I consider paying for the Blackmagic license to help boost. I thought about it, and since Blackmagic has been allowing free software in Resolve, I figure it's nice to pay them back for all the time I've used it. In any case, long story short, all my footage magically worked better in the Studio version. The monitoring playback is smooth, the rendering went up by like 125% speed. I was doing 40-45fps rendering in Resolve free, and it went to 90-110fps in the Studio version. Probably is the cheapest upgrade if you want to do this. But I'm still eyeing an upgrade of the pc hardware just for the hell of it.
Wow..this is exactly what i need. Thanks people.
Thanks, good info.
Loved this video and the indepth look at building systems for Davinci Resolve. I was a little worried watch regarding the laptop I bought 3 and a half years ago when I started using Davinci Resolve. However my system still meets the requirements. I will be using these recommendations when I replace or upgrade this laptop in the future.
Super helpful. Thanks guys
i5-12600, 48GB ram, 3060 Dual 8GB, Asus 27" ProArt 4K monitor. The PC was built for my at Memory Express in Winnipeg. I will buy Studio today. Then there is the fact the internet here allows me to watch this video at 480p.

what?
@@rickybobbyracing9106and just started the 2 1/2 hour download of Studio. The schools have fibre, we have fibre to the house but not hooked up yet, so the town is on satelite through 50 year old phone lines. With the download happening the speed is 1.28 Mbps down.
spend the extra $100 and get you the speed editor. or $300 more if you get the full size keyboard. both come with the studio license
@@donwells8465That is way more advanced than what I do. I'm hoping for better colour correction after the 90 minute download this morning but it is a learning curve. Thank you though.
Thanks. An invaluable video. Good job.👍
What an incredibly informative video. I think about 70% of it was above my paygrade. I had a system built for me in 2019 by CPU Solutions plus a few upgrades I installed since then. I'm still learning / deciding how deep to go into DR. But still, wow!
Lots to THINK about guys. Thanks 4 ALL this GREAT information. I use the non-Studio version which works for the videos that I create. Cheers !!!!! 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
This seems to be an unusual video for you to do, however I really enjoy how you present the information. My computer is about five years old and I'm wondering if it's still up to the task. This video has given me a great starting point from which to evaluate my system and determine whether to keep it upgraded or get a new system. I am not a techie or highly literate in computers so this video will be tremendously helpful in my search. Thank you
BRILLIANT!
So much great info! Love Puget, even though I use Macs :-p
Great video!!! Matt probably curbed the sales of their top tier machines a little, but those are not likely to be the normal everyday sales. But I think he probably boosted overall sales, because I fell I can trust them the next time I need a system and don’t want to build it myself. The system I built in 2022 cost me around $800.00 less than the closest comparable system I customized on their site. However, I currently make around $40.00 per hour, and I calculated up the time I spent researching the parts I bought, Puget would have actually saved me money in time.
Valuable Video! Do they, Puget, have a KZhead or any other social media page?
Puget Systems made my PC back in 2023
actually great insights. desktops all day baby
GREAT VIDEO!!!! What kind of improvement would be expected going from 64 gigs of ram to 128 gigs in resolve? is it like nvme drives, when full they slow down? would more overhead help with speed?
@15:45 - I disagree. What about rendering the final edit? You most definitely could use a high-end GPU as DR will give you the choice between software or hardware-accelerated exporting. I always do hardware, i.e., GPU does all the final exporting. In any case, great video! You're the only one who did a video like this. Everyone else talks about the best PC for gaming.
Thank you
Will make a note here. When I upgraded my system, my budget did not allow me to get the video card I wanted, which was an Nvdia 4080. I had a 3060. So I kept it and bought a 4070. Running tests after the build was complete, I did tests in DaVinci with the both cards activated and only the 4070 selected. Compared to online tests of Resolve features on different channels and sites, I found my test results were within 10% of a 4080 at (during that time) about 40% of the price. Since both cards have the same amount of memory, it works great with Blender too. So this is an option if you can't afford the card you want.
4070 and 4080 don't have the same amount of memory
@@niksalakic5406 What does that have to do with anything? The point was the 3060 and 4070 have the same amount of memory. Read what I wrote again. Never said they had the same amount as a 4080.
Im still rocking my i7-3770, 32gb and gtx 1660. Editing 4k h265 files. No problems
Proxys-use? 😉
@@michaelsopunov no proxies. I don't do anything fancy though. Maybe some swooshy transitions in fusion on rare occasions
This was good. Super good. Next should what monitor.
BTW, a decent add on to a laptop is a 13-16 inch artist tablet, because it can function as either a tablet or an extra monitor and is easy to travel with. I have a laptop with a 3070Ti in it and use an XP-Pen Artist 13.3 Pro for traveling.
Thanks for this very interesting interview .And thank you for all your amazing ( and funny) tutorials. Just saw you with Alex in his latest vid , you guys are my favorite teachers. I do a lot of wildlife vids (mainly birds) , spent some time comparing the RTX 4080 with the AMD rx 7900XTX and can confirm what Matt said about the speed in Magic Mask thanks to the AI . But, there is something else nobody seems to speak about , it's the quality .The RTX 4080 is now so fast that it can barely keep track of the mask . The AMD on the other hand is much much slower but needs less correction because the tracking is more accurate ...This being said, I personally recommend at least one of those 2 cards if you work in UHD 10 bit high bit-rate . The 4090 is probably a little bit better but too expensive in my opinion and anything lower than the RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX will cause drag and demand a lot of optimized media.
I wonder about Resolve on Linux and any differences compared to editing on Windows or MAC - hardware specs the same or????
Nice, tanks a lot! But nothing said about ssd and hdd config. What about 3 ssd's and 1 hdd for storage?
Nice. Now, I have to find a laptop that reflects this this wisdom. And can run blender and resolve. Btw, can fusion run on the cloud? Like Blender, where you can use a render farm?
Thank You
Maybe already mentioned but with the Resolve license you can buy the Speed Editor bundle and it comes with a Resolve license so essentially you are getting the Speed Editor for free, could even sell it if you have no interest in it.
@CaseyFaris I am about to build a new rig soon and video creation will be primary focus with gaming as secondary. I learned from "Tech Notice" videos that Intel CPUs have an iGPU and that it's really good for video editing. I also learned that Nvidia 4000 series cards are good because they have AV1. My question is: if I plan to get a 4060 or 4060ti and the plan is to use AV1 in DaVinci Resolve, do I still need Intel's iGPU? Because I think the iGPU only helps with H264 and H265 right? If I don't plan on using H265, then the intel iGPU will be useless, and then I dont have to get 14600k or 14700k, and I can just go Ryzen 7800X3D. It's so efficient and cool-running! Is this correct? Or is Intel iGPU still important even if I plan to use Nvidia and AV1 in DaVinci Resolve? Thanks!
This was awesome, thanks so much. If only they operated in other countries.
Hi, I'm using a MacBook Air M1 (16gb) and I was wondering if a custom PC (i9 14900k + RTX 4080 super + 96gb Ram) would be a worthy upgrade? Because I edit videos every days on it, and most of the times it's great but when I work on bigger projects (+25 min timeline, with vfx, sound design, multicam, titles,...) it tends to really struggle. And if it can help, I always use Proxies and also use a variety of codecs because I have a FX3, FX6 + Pocket 6K Pro but I also rent other cameras if it's needed for the project (like : Red, Arri, etc...). But I still work on a 1080p timeline (Davinci) and change the resolution just after I finish the project. So I was thinking of using my MacBook Air M1 when I need to be mobile and use a Mac Studio Ultra or a Custom Pc at my office. To be honest I don't care if it's Mac or PC because I'm used to work on both since 2006, I just want to be sure that my investment would be worth it (performance wise). Hope you see this comment and awesome video btw, such great infos shared!
This is a really great interview. I'm a casual Studio user and I have spent days discovering what you cover in minutes. How do you check if an Intel IGPU is on and working? Where in BIOS and in Davinci Studio do you turn on/ confirm it is working properly?
Perfect timing! As I’m about to upgrade my 5900x editing rig 👌🏼
sorry to run here , i have a 3700x and want to upgrade to a 5900x , if you are interested in selling it let me know
Goddamn amazing video man thanks 🙏
totally hooked, since my new build cant start davinci with Intel's activated uhd 770🙄😭
great video. Would love to see what the design for a combo system, ie Blender or Maya, Adobe applications along with Resolve. Plus realize why studios prefer Nuke over Fusion. Didn't know about it's limitations.
Are amd gpus good for both gaming and editing? I thought about the rx6700xt.
A DDR5 heads up I don't see people talking about. I went all in (for my budget) on my build. ASUS ROG Z790 motherboard, i7 14700k, RTX 4080 OC, 128 GB 6,400mhz DDR5 etc etc. I JUST found out that the DDR5 (4x32GB) will not run at 6400mhz. I can only get it to run at 4200mhz. If you want your RAM to run close to the advertised speed, your system can only have 2 sticks (slots used)!? Why bother putting 4 RAM slots on the motherboard and advertising RAM speeds when RAM won't actually go that fast?! (XMP in BIOS won't work with 4 RAM slots used). I wish I'd got 2 sticks of 48GB DDR5 now. So there's a little heads up for anyone who reads this.
