Wild dogs Hunting Waterbuck

A throw back to one of the best sightings during our Stay@Home Safari’s series. After watching the pack of wild dogs hunt a large herd of impala and missing, they bump into a mother and calf waterbuck. After being chased into the water by the dogs, the little waterbuck managed to escape from a large pod of hippos, who were not impressed with the disturbance in their waterhole. After a few hours the wild dogs gave up and the Mother and calf waterbuck managed to escape unharmed.

  • That is one badass Buck. Managed to avoid getting itself eaten by Wilddogs and Hyenas. How it manage to dodge all of the hippos attacks is interesting.

    • You call that a badass. It just kept running. These bucks need to learn how to fight. It's a big animal with 2 long horns. There's no excuse they can't take out the dogs with that. Maybe not the hippo in the water, but on land, it has a chance. Take lessons from the little honey badger.

      @junofranco6638@junofranco6638 Жыл бұрын
    • @@junofranco6638 Honey badgers are more equipped than antelopes. They are maneuverable. Also, painted dogs are some of the most agile canines out there. Try attacking one and it will likely dodge the attack and now you've got the whole pack eating you.

      @randomkinkajou5747@randomkinkajou5747 Жыл бұрын
    • @@randomkinkajou5747 I would not call the honey badger any more equipped than the bigger predators. It cannot outrun any of them and they have no size or strength advantage. The only advantage they have is their tough skin. True, they have claws and strong bite, but so do the predators. The honey badgers survive and win its battles by being fearless. That's why the predators, particularly the inexperienced young cubs, gets shaken up seeing something that small who's willing to fight them. This buck and antelopes are bigger than the dogs, and have long horns like spears, which they can use to impale one or two of the dogs, that should be enough to scare them off.

      @junofranco6638@junofranco6638 Жыл бұрын
    • @@junofranco6638 Actually, it wins the battles because the predators realise that such a small meal fighting back is not worth the effort. A giraffe is likely to become prey to a lion, while a honey badger could escape a lion, but would get stomped by a giraffe. Honey badgers are hardy, but prey animals can be hardier.

    • We humans have little knowledge about animals. They are not stupid that most of us think. Most of the time, they communicate in a way that is unknown to us and just because our brain with limited powers cannot detect it, we think of it as a stupid thing to do. Instinct is the easiest way for us to refer to animal's behaviour when we don't understand it. They are clever and are able to analyse their surroundings and actually make decisions.

    • Some argue that cruel isn't the word.. it's definitely indifferent to suffering though. African wild dogs are predators, but they're among the smaller predators and are easily driven off a kill. So they have to prioritize quick feeding above all else, and that means not making time to kill an animal that's already incapacitated and accessible for feeding. It's gruesome to us but it's just what works for them.
