Legend has it before Sleep rehearsed in that space, the walls were white.
Hahahahahahaha
Gnarly!
Awesome comment! Made my day.
So where the drums...
😂😅
Most Epiq setlist ever: 1.Dopesmoker
true facts
It's taken 11 years but I think I can top this: 1.Dopesmoker 2.Dopesmoker
Got the 666th like on this comment! 🤘😈👍
Ok now don't touch it@@Space_pulse
trueeee
plays three-note riffs at 20bpm for an hour still listens to Rush
Billy Bloomer hey man, sometimes all you need is three notes and fuckload of overdubs and you produce one of the greatest doom metal albums of all time.
yeah, but a fucking complicated three notes
I mean the timings are complicated and there are these little steps out of the notes and come on, it's not just this
I know, I know, I just wanted to explain it's not simple
You can learn much from Neil Peart and his lightning fast drumming/timing. Playing slower, gives more space, and power, to the sound, yet relies on the same techniques Peart used/uses. Same coin, different sides. Hard to play fast and tight! Incredibly hard to play slow, and tight!! I just heard of them.. Poor man's Melvins! IMHO!
I saw them live for Scion. I have never witnessed a heavier band in my life. Every bass note Al hit sent quakes through my body. I became a vibration during their set. It was amazing
That was a legendary festival, all the heaviest bands played there.
They rehearsing at Castle Wolfenstein?
John Stonebraker It’d be nice to use those Amps as weapons lol
Castle Reefenstein.
"achtung!"
GUTEN TAG!
Fucking nerds
When your bass player has a bigger pedalboard than you
Matt basically uses physical shit instead of a bunch of different pedals. Stacking a ton of amps, ect. He also frequently uses a 12 string with the octave strings removed on the 3 low strings, and the high strings being doubled instead of octave pairs. Basically his high strings sound like a chorus without a chorus.
@@aniquinstark4347 aiight that convinced me on a 12 string
@@aniquinstark4347 didnt know i need one until now.
@@aniquinstark4347 sorry for the random bump but Matt Pike has a 9 string. Not a 12 string with the 3 extra strings removed from the bottom 3 strings. You are right about the top 3 being doubled up and giving it a chorus effect. First Act does make (made?) 6, 9, and 12 string versions of the guitar he has though. But they're very hard to come by and last one I saw for sale was about $4k.
@@aniquinstark4347 only applies to the High on Fire stuff where he also doing vocal duties, his Sleep pedalboard is pretty long to say the least 🙃
Matt’s like every member of Sabbath but in one guy.😂
I think the difficulty lies in knowing where u are in the song. Especially an hour long song like dopesmoker.
Nick de Aquino Harasz and especially when you’re stoned.
nah, each riff repeats 4 times and riffs have A/B variations so when you are at the second B variation you know next riff is coming, also bass does octave/blues scale fills before riff changes
This song is a gift to mankind.
"A jet-lagged Sleep." So would you say Sleep was...sleepy?
"jet-lagged smokers." I would say they're probably... Dopesmokers
I love the drum beat so much and I can’t explain why
Everything works together
My two all time favorite bands are Rush and Sleep. Here we have a video where Sleep is rehearsing Dopesmoker while the drummer is wearing a Rush shirt. I’ll let you the reader work on the physics of the epicness that exists in this video for me.
How do they remember it? These long riffs take some serious memorisation, and you wouldn't have thought stoners could manage it!
It was sleeps biggest song
@@SJRIX405 Yes of course. Biggest in every sense. Matt Pike says memorising and recording it was one of the hardest things he's ever done in his life.
Yeah especially with all the small nuances and slight variations in the riff.
they wrote it.
Riff charts used at the writing for each section throughout the song & then individual learned and put together. Google the riff chart and you’ll see the sections (Hotel Room/Cultivator/Morris) 🤘🏼
*Insert joke about Matt wearing a shirt*
Didn't recognize matt with that shirt on
Matt has an amazing sixpack, but it's hidden under his bear like manifestation.
You sure that's a six pack, and not a pony keg?
it must've been REALLY cold
His t-shirts bend light around him like Predator.
Fucken boreing intro set the pace for the rest of the song👎🏻
why did cameraman stop filming just a moment before the voice begins? i wanted to hear "DROOOOOOOOP OUT OF LIFEEEEEE WITH BOOOOONG IN HAAAAAND"
+gimmigimmigimmi fuck yeah, i did too
gimmigimmigimmi Follow the 💨 to the riff filled land
*Ian Hand
HOLY SH*T IS MATT PIKE WEARING A SHIRT?!?!?
+casvandalist lol that is the first thing I thought seeing this after having seen them live
😂😂😂
No, it's his new Tattoo...
🤣🤣🤣
Simple things in life make me happy, like seeing the drummer of a band called Sleep wearing the tee of a band named Rush.
Played the entire album straight when i was DJ at whpk chicago 2010 or so. That was fun.
You got away with it!?
completely, late show.@@zampanoelegy7946
We used to play this on 420 on our doom and sludge specialty show at my college Station, wsou.
The amps must actually be as loud as the drums, but when you record with a simple camera in such a room, the drums get over everything.
anybody else notice the picture of Max Cavalera behind Matt?
Why did this finish just as it was about to get even better.... DRRROOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP.......... OOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT........
OF LIFEEEE WITH BOONNNNNNNNNNGGG IIIIIIIIIINNN HAAAAAAAAANNNDD
drummers confusion for the first 25 seconds....priceless
Man just when it's getting ready to take off it ends...
That moment you realize just how great Chris Hakius really is :o
That's not chris
@@chucknorris843 It's Jason Roeder, from Neurosis, right? It's been a while since I made that comment, but I think that what I meant was either that Hakius is a genius for coming up with the drum part for this song, or that he is just too good at what he does and couldn't be easily replicated, even by a good drummer. I'm pretty sure I've meant both of these.
@@YannickTMessiah yessir!
I wonder what Chris is up to nowadays. I know after Sleep he became a monk or some shit
@@chucknorris843that was Justin marler and he left in the asbestosdeath/volume 1 days
this song always makes me wish for the return of the Druids to Earth
dude, seriously, go see them live. it is fucking mind blowing, really. nevermind this rehearsal, like jason (the drummer) has already said in the comments, they were not in the best shape at that moment:) and he is an amazing drummer, he fits perfectly, the guy really knows how Sleep needs to sound.
This is how the universe was formed.
the Rush shirt makes me happy.
me too
Absolute masterpiece of a track this
I love how small his drum set is
they need their green amps back from hank III
Haha people always give me shit for wearing ear foams to metal shows... look at Roeder plugging them up before they start to jam.
Austin Eddington-Howe You're doing the right thing! Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend of the Who wish that they had. They've lost like 85% of their hearing during their career. The Who was in Guiness Book of World Records for a couple of consecutive years in 74' and 75' (I think) as loudest concert band.
Yea. Whenever I play or go to a show, I'm stuck with ringing the rest of the next day. I just got sick of it.
***** Yea, it is better to plug them up to keep your ears alive to hear another day.
WHAT?!? Huh?!?
I've heard that many techs actually set up the sound specifically to sound good through plugs. Definitely the smartest choice.
Can you imagine sitting in that room taking dabs
All the youtube people who dont understand Sleep, or the mighty dopesmoker, make me love this so much more :)
holy shit! matt is playing guitar with a shirt on!!
Just doesn't have the same effect without Chris Hakius's hypnotic precision & reality-transcending groove.
IMO their current drummer does a really good job emulating Hakius
Jason rules. I've never understood people like you that need to shit on someone just to praise someone else.
@@MethSloth that's hardly "shitting" on someone, when merely expressing a preference for a former member. are you one of those utopian snowflakes by any chance?
i need more of this
Matt is using Marshall's and Soldanos right now. Love those amps, but the Matamp Green is amazing.
Chubby. Weed, success, beer, and pizza, and time. It's all good.
Mike is king at the riffs....
My favourite guitar player.
Super quality video
Nipple, unfortunately there was no board mix or anything like that for audio, just the simple mono on-board mic of my camera. so consider this a drum-heavy mix.
I never thought i'd get to see this.Awesome1
SO GOOD
Ugh the drums sound so good
This was fucking awesome. Please do more of these.
Just looked at your channel and whats a girl like you doing in a place like this? seriously. Though, it is fucking awesome that you enjoy sleep. Check out Tuber. Not like stoner or doom but something pretty awesome.
Max Cavalera photo behind Matt,cool
tfw a Marshall stack is just your little practice amp... before you step out from behind the Great Wall of Orange
quem sabe faz ao vivo, muita qualidade no som da banda
Was mostly in jest my good man, Thanks for making the video at all. ;)
The beast awakens once more
almost sounds like a different song on Marshall amps wtf
C0nnie i think is more about the quality of the recording.
lotusflowerdeathstar That’s part of it but the real difference is the Marshall amp, they always sound so thin for this style.
I was thinking the exact same thing Those green amps don’t fuck around
a literal wizard matamp greens and orange amps
I think he just using the MARSHALL power section ..
Who's that guy in the black shirt? He a back up guitarist or something?
This sounds like they are jamming in my garage, but why only 8 minutes of it???
wow..catchy and i can dance to it..
I wanna see them live, where, when, I've got to go!? Austria
Your drumming sounds perfect to me man, oh and nice rush shirt!
The father, the son, *THE HOLY RIFF!*
Still got it!
NICE RUSH SHIRT LIL BOY!
Wish they played the whole thing live
Wow! More of this?
this is rad!
Wow... Matt with a shirt?
Cold guitar Riff
Matt pike with a shirt?! I have seen everything. I can die now
anyone know what kind of cymbals are those? Paiste Giant Beat?
Om + High on Fire = Sleep Is like putting Exodia together
More like Sleep : 2 = High on Fire and Om since Sleep was there before both of them
@@gonkdroid2539 Joke's on you 2, they're the same band. Matt Pike is in all 3.
@@Mp57navy matt pike doest play in om
That ride, that damned ride!!!
This was shot on my birthday :D
thinking the exact same thing the past years...and now as a guitar player even though i can technically play arpeggios and stuff ,i enjoy playing music that can actually mean something to me or any1 really ,despite its technical difficulty.....
I think he should keep practicing that intro....and it might not be long enough
jerry71ify hahaa oh my god yes.
That Marshall is like my dog, it has no balls.
Of course it doesn’t; it’s recorded from a phone/camera lmao. If you’ve heard Matt use a Marshall on occasion live (miced), you’d know he makes any of his amps sound incredible.
@@noahb498 Cool story brah LmAo. Not doubting Riffmaster Pike's ability to achieve amazing tone because I HAVE seen him live on multiple occasions, I'm just saying he sounds way better with a wall of Oranges behind him.
@@ajlofton28 100%. I was just saying that recording quality can make a lot of amps sound like garbage. But I agree, Orange is Matt’s peak of tone.
i think green in pike’s peak tone not orange
Super rad to watch the
massive ride
the bassist have a pedalboard and the guitarrist havent, epic
Awesome
The picture on Dopesmoker's jacket resembled that of Roger Dean, who was in charge of the art side of Yes.
I like that chord...........
very good..................................................................
Hold that riff, just going to put my washing on...I'll meet you at the intro in 10 mins
Portaflex 500! Amazing Discovery!
I need the follow up ! pls !
épico !!!!
So do Al use a Ampeg Portaflex 500 or 800 as head/top in this clip?
is that chris's kit? if so anyone know what model? if not anyone know what type of kit chris used? thanks
They need to rehearse this? I would think it's indelibly ingrained in their beings.
+Robert Smith Always need to rehearse. Always.
Thomas Carmichael unless you’re Lars
@@jakeherington7237 well, he still needs, he just doesn't. That's why it sound like he didn't
The only song where you can skip ahead a week and the drums haven't kicked in yet. Fucking love sleep!
Como pueden haber tres personas que no les gusta este temazzzzo, SLEEP es la mejor banda que ha existido, ojala pudieran venir a Chile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Que venga om por ultimo ctm :'(
man Matt and Al are puttin on some pounds! Now their even HEAVIER!
Does anyone knows what is the cymbals set up?
Nice band
It seems that the guitar is evil loud until the mates hit it hard. The loudness there is insane. 😈
Still waiting for them to finish tuning their guitars
awesome rush shirt
mr neuroeder, i need to see if i can fix the sync of the vid + audio...your tempo sounded fine to me. thanks for melting thousands of faces off @ Roadburn.
Can barely hear Al.
at least this guys intro give the other guys time to chop up and change the bong water.
This should be the rehearsal of the first 8 minutes of Dopesmoker
