You'd never guess which species orcas evolved from

They are among the most formidable animals in the ocean - pack-hunting creatures that feed on everything from salmon to blue whales. Orcas, like all whales, are mammals - they breathe air and feed their young with milk, but their ancestors are not who you’d expect. #TheNatureOfThings #ListeningtoOrcas

The very first “whales” were land animals that walked on four legs - small deer-like creatures, about the size of a house cat, that ate plants and waded around in prehistoric lagoons over 50 million years ago.
But in the span of just 10 million years, those land-living vegetarians lost their hind legs, grew flippers and fins, to become the streamlined giants of the seas.
The closest-living relatives of orcas are hippos, but a modern example of what their ancestor may have been like is the chevrotain, a small deer species that dives into water when threatened, hiding from predators below the surface.
John Ford, a zoologist and renowned expert in orca acoustics, describes how orcas adapted to the ocean habitat. Watch the video above for the full story.

  • Thought this was going to be about how ancestral orcas (like O. citoniensis) were much smaller and less formidable than modern orcas, eating only small fish and squid.

  • See anti captivity people, the dorsal fin is floppy because there is no bones in dorsal fin, just cartilage.

    @ripplewavess@ripplewavess3 жыл бұрын
    • tbf the reason the dorsal fin is floppy is because of warm air. Orcas that perform tends to expose their backs to warm air much more often than wild orcas. So it is indeed correct that the floppy dorsal fin is not in any way connected with emotion captivity is still bad.

      @nikkole5133@nikkole51333 жыл бұрын
    • It's floppy because its meant to give them balance when swimming in the open ocean, if it's flopped to its side because the pool they secluded it in was too small than that's not good. what was your point? Do you just want Orcas to suffer in tiny spaces?

      @thewoollyviking5928@thewoollyviking59282 жыл бұрын
