When wrestler fights a striker they will always look better on the stand up than they really are. We seen numerous times when striker is afraid of take down threat so they get light on the feet, doesn't really mean they are better strikers. But when two wrestlers fight each other dynamics are completely different.

Islam beating Volk is probably one of the most disrespected wins in recent memory. 1. Most media had Islam winning. This isn't Paddy vs Gordon where the vast majority of media and fans disagree with the decision. Volk's own coach (Bareman) said he didn't do enough. Craig Jones thought Volk needed a finish. The crowd cheering for anything Volk did and seeing the underdog have some success affected how many fans saw the fight. Many fans are also biased. If you look at Twitter/Insta comments before the fight most are rooting for Volk and dissing Islam. For 4.5 rounds Islam landed the cleaner/harder shots on the feet, in addition to getting TDs and back control. Volk was constantly getting hit coming in, getting his head snapped back, and acknowledging Islam landing clean on him. Most of the fight was on the feet and Islam won with his B game. Luke Thomas is a CKB fan and said beforehand that Volk could be a tough match with his striking/TDD/cardio/experience/heart. After the fight he said "Islam outstruck Volk." To most people, Volk overperformed in the grappling and Islam overperformed in the striking. Those are not equal though. Volk defending some TDs, scrambling well, and getting back to his feet a few times is all defense. It doesn't score under the scoring criteria. Islam overperforming in the striking meant he dropped Volk, landed damage, and got hit very little. Volk didn't have any TDs or subs of his own for grappling offense. Arguments like "What if there was a 6th round" "Look at their faces" "Volk did more damage" "Volk finished on top" don't matter. You score it based on the criteria. Volk did most of the visual damage in the last min of round 5. Nobody disputes Volk won rd 5. 2. The fight was labeled as PFP#1 vs #2. Volk said "P4P #1 on the line! Lightweight belt on the line!" After the fight though since it was close, Volk still claims to be #1. I get the ufc ranking voters can vote how they want, but Volk himself shouldn't be calling himself #1. Dude put his rank on the line and lost. Also #1 shouldn't be coming off a loss. Now Jon is #1 because he beat Gane, who he said was the least well-rounded HW. Gane wasn't the champ and already lost to Ngannou. Jon was fighting for his all-time legacy, not current P4P. Jon even said Islam and Volk should stay ahead of him due to their activity. 1 win in the last 3 yrs shouldn't make you #1. If you go back further, many people think he lost to Reyes. 3. Some people will say because Volk was the smaller fighter and made it a close fight, he should stay #1. On the other hand you can argue a win is a win and should put you over no matter what. The size difference was overblown. Volk himself said he was 170-172lbs and thought Islam was 175lbs. Not much of a difference. There are LWs who normally weight less than Volk, and others who are bigger than Islam. Size also didn't seem to be an advantage for Islam in the fight. Volk was equally strong in the clinch and said Islam didn't feel strong. Being shorter made it harder to shoot on his legs. He can also scramble faster. Volk could push on the hips and quickly pull his legs back to escape. Volk has outstruck taller guys before like Max. Islam's timing, distance management, and TD threat were bigger issues for Volk on the feet than his height. 4. After the fight Dan Hooker accuses Islam of cheating with 0 proof. Volk and his coaches echoed these statements. If there is 0 proof then there is no case. Sure you can say most fighters are probably on some PEDs, but that also applies to Volk and CKB. Izzy had gyno vs Costa (in this case there was visible proof to at minimum raise suspicion). Volk seems to only be getting stronger and have better cardio as he ages. CKB fighters often go to Thailand to train where PEDs are abundant. I'm not saying Volk is cheating because I have 0 proof, but you can argue CKB doesn't look squeaky clean. Unless you have proof you shouldn't be accusing anyone, especially after a loss since you look bad.

I can see the argument for Jon being number 1, but even he himself said activity matters. No one’s been more active fighting comp rn than Islam. But there is no shot in hell Volk should be above Islam in the rankings after losing to him.
Why does everyone praise Volk for fighting well in the soil, but no one says anything about the very good fight of Islam standing up? Everyone expected Islam to fight better than volk in wrestling and on the ground, but contrary to expectations, he was much better than volk standing up.
