Should Israel be at Eurovision? LBC callers debate
As thousands lined the streets of Malmö city centre to protest the decision to include Israeli singer Eden Golan in the Eurovision song contest, James O'Brien and Nick Ferrari hear from callers expressing their views.
Israel was permitted to compete this year after agreeing to change the lyrics of its entry, which was widely understood to include a reference to the Hamas massacre on October 7th, 2023.
Among those protesting Israel's inclusion was Greta Thunberg. “It is outrageous that Israel is allowed to participate”, she stressed. “We cannot remain silent during a genocide.”

When I saw the video of the nine year old Palestinian girl with her kegs amputated, crying "give me back my legs," I realised Palestine had to be free.
Same with the other video of 4 kids walking down a dirt road hit by a missile, for being kids walking down a dirt road.

Russia has invaded another contestant‘s country and has been sanctioned by the EU (amongst others) and has resolutions against it by the UN. There are also travel restrictions for Russian Nationals. The EBU is a broadcasting union. It does not nor should it judge the actions of another country. It has to react to an embargo though because those are legally binding.
Sangita was one the best journalists LBC had. Most of the others are self-obsessed mouthpieces for the establishment, incapable of holding active war criminals to account

Ferrari says he doesn't understand how anyone could compare Russia's invasion with Israel responding to October the 7th. Well maybe because it doesn't on october the 7th. Russia invaded Ukraine in 2021, israel invaded in 1948 and has since been an occupier of the Palestinian land. So i suppose you couldn't really compare the two. As soon as I knew they weren’t banning Israel. I knew I’m not watching this year I don’t have much but I’ve bet on Israel at 35/1 and if they win I won’t watch it next year and my winnings will be getting denoted to Medical Aid for Palestinians.
With so many boycotting because of Israel’s entry, imo, primarily pro-Israel people will watch and will skew the votes towards them. Could be because people just think she’s the best, but I doubt it

This Israeli singer is singing political song and should be banned.
The most powerful protest might be for the audience to remain silent after the Israeli singer's performance in the final. Thereby showing no particular personal disrespect to the singer herself (i.e. not 'booing' her), but at the same time making about as strong a statement to the EBC as it's possible to do.
I wholeheartedly support this approach, although the problem is that the broadcasters would still feel inclined to dub a cheering crowd track at the end of the performance, as they did during the semi-finals. I don't particularly care for booing this performer. As much as I abhor what Israel is doing right now, I feel bad for the singer. That said, only by booing, and essentially 'drowning out' whatever type of track the broadcasters dub over the audience response, will the audience's opposition be recorded.

Hearing "October the 7th" as a justification for war crimes is getting tiresome. Atrocities are not justification for atrocities - the oppression of Gazans does not justify October 7th. October the 7th does not justify collective punishment of an entire population. All peoples have a right to defend themselves but they SHOULD be held to account for HOW they do it. Israel currently stands in defiance of an ICC interim ruling. The suspension of arms shipments and disqualification from international events is wholly appropriate.

Unfortunately, if this applied to Russia, I think it's fair that it applies to Israel. Russian constestant may not support or approve of the invasion of Ukraine as well. I don't think it's honestly a clear cut black and white moral area, but the rules must apply to everyone. This is all on Bibi and his government, it's not the contestant's fault.

I really don't get the " Euro-vision is non political" argument for Israel being allowed to participate. You just cant equate it with Russia not being allowed to compete. you either are a-political and have both or stand up to war and have neither. Both have killed tens of thousands of civilians Both have committed war crimes Both are using civilian access to basic human necessities as a means of conflict Both target civilian infrastructure Both act with disregard for civilian lives Both don't practise adequate press freedoms or free speech Both are causing the enduring displacement of millions of people Both frequently lie to justify their actions If you're being a pedant Russia's war is one of aggression where as Israel's is (at least initially) defensive against Hamas, but that is the dumb since Israel has killed hundreds in the west bank, and that isn't Hamas controlled and they carry out strikes in foreign countries (also not Hamas controlled). The net of a defensive war can only be cast so wide before it is a meaningless statement. Personally I think there should just be a rule that: a nation cannot compete if they are being investigated for war crimes in an ongoing conflict.
Many viewers dont justify what Hamas did on 7 October, but this does not mean we cant understand Hamas. This is like asking Russian soldiers in 1944 to respect german lives.
