  • Wow. The final result looked perfect. The reflections weren't split, all of them looked completely smooth and level. Yet, in reading the comments from several people regarding the preparation of the subfloor, and that the floor won't last long, my mind is screaming "You're right! There's no way this floor will last. At the same time, my mind is thinking "These guys have probably been building floors this way forever and, in spite of my instincts, they're probably lasting for years and years". I'm very conflicted.

  • Not sure about the rest of the world, but here in Australia, we call that first layer 'the screed'. It is 4 parts builders sand (not a regular sand, but fine and clean), with 1 part cement. When it dries. it is is soft enough that it can be chiselled away if needed, but strong enough to hold the tiles. The purpose of the screed is to level the floor under and secondly to absorbed the crack of the floor under (usually concrete - which, if tiles are laid directly on it, will also crack with the floor movement).

    • You forgot to mention that the screed was supposed to dry for at least 3 days before they tile, especially such massive tiles. That screed and tiles are going to crack within a month or two because of all the movement placed on the screed on the same day of laying it. If i was the owner and i see that i would want a refund.

Working with marble tile for over 37 years I can tell that the base(dirt) is not sound enough to bear constant weight and traffic over period of time. The thin set mortar being used will adhere to the tile...but not dirt. Nice video !

      @p-slick9956@p-slick99562 ай бұрын
  • This is an unknown construction technique to me. In the US we pour solid 2 foot think concrete slabs with rebar and tension rods. This looks like it was built on top of sand mixed with concrete. How does the floor not shift, sag or hold moisture underneath?

    @ZenMogwai@ZenMogwai8 ай бұрын
    • If you've never heard of deck mud or dry pack, I question your knowledge of tile setting techniques. It's been used for decades here in the U.S. It's usually done on top of whatever sub flooring is already there, whether that is a slab or wood deck. Most poured concrete slabs have slight imperfections and are not perfectly flat, and when setting large format tile we like to do our own precision float job with this technique. Done it many times over the years. Looks like they did it right over the dirt, though, with no subfloor under it, which is against building code here in the U.S. These people obviously don't know that or care, but then again they are not in the U.S. so they probably won't get sued. They know just enough to make it look good on the surface and get paid, and will probably not have to be held accountable when it fails and cracks eventually. Here they would get sued and most likely be barred from ever holding a contractor's license for such a mistake.

    • @@_vindicator_I just realized this channel has a ton of videos of them doing it this way as if this is the proper way to do it right over the ground with no proper subflooring under it. This isn't in the USA, or they could get sued. We do use deck mud here in the US, but we don't do it this way. It's against building code the way they are doing it, plus their thinsetting technique sucks.

      @tomasom4497@tomasom44972 ай бұрын
    • @@tomasom4497 yeah in the uk too. if you're flooring on the foundation level, you need to have a moisture barrier, the concrete has to be poured or if you need it very thin, you can use reinforced. and because they are just laying this directly on the ground they should be using a root mesh too, because if some weeds grow outside the walls their roots will crack the floor... i'm a 100% these guys haven't even waited for the concrete to cure, they started gluing and laying immediately

Which tells me that in about a year, or less, there is going to be some settling and all that beautiful tile is going to start cracking or at the least the grout is going to give up and there will be an uneven surface before long. It's just a known fact that weight will cause dirt to settle unevenly if there hasn't been substantial reinforcement or a tamped sub-surface.

      @lorddd1753@lorddd17537 ай бұрын
    • @lorddd1753 no man. I've done high rise lobbies in downtown Toronto, Trump tower included. Dry pack is almost industry standard when you're putting in high end very large tile. 4'x4', floor needs to be 100 percent level. You pour a primer first to adhere to the concrete, and the concentration of Portland takes care of the rest. As thick as 4-5 inches won't give you any issues.

      @kevinmoreira86@kevinmoreira867 ай бұрын
    • @@kevinmoreira86 Yeah, but you are doing it over the concrete slab or other sub flooring like you are supposed to. These guys are just doing it right over dirt, with no subflooring or moisture barrier under it. It will crack and fail doing it like this.

I saw them use an additive so may help with strength but coverage isn’t sufficient for such size tile. Then they didn’t care about repeating patterns. They didn’t try to make it look random by at least rotating the tiles when 2 of the same are laid next to each other. Then they missed an opportunity to do the same trim around that pilar to camouflage that ugly cut out they needed to do on that tile.

      @flashmedia8953@flashmedia8953 Жыл бұрын
    • @@khancrow8212 My experience is in Western techniques. The cement floor mixed at that ratio of sand to cement at that hydration level is a mortar and we would put down concrete (which is stronger and less likely to crack and less porous). You could argue that they don't need that kind of strength, but our building codes would never allow it (unless there was already concrete under it, can't tell). The thinset used under the tile is way too wet for our standards. But once again, not done to Western standards. In using our thicker thinset, we leave a thicker mortar layer under each tile, which means standing on an unset tile will canter it and make it uneven. The grout they use is also very dry. I do not know if a polymer was mixed in for sealing in the grout, but when the grout is that dry the grout lines have a high likelyhood of porosity or exclusions which means it cannot be sealed properly.

    • @@kanetao polymer is a terrible sealer. It degrades over time. Western materials are not design to last. It's just business. But with these guys, their mix is over life-time warranty. Proven through ancient time.

    • I did tile when I was younger, you can earn a good living..I'll give you some advice and this is extremely important.. invest in the best pair of knee pads out there, I had a good pair I forget the name of them maybe pro knees not sure but they also covered your shins and helped with posture..always were pads, I started young and sometimes wore pads sometimes not I thought I'd never break down but it took a few years b4 I wore pads everytime, but b4 that I damaged my knees and feel it at times to this day..take care of your knees I don't care if u only have one tile to set..spend the time to strap on the pads everytime..I hope you stay with it and enjoy it, I loved being able to see the job b4 and after and actually seeing your work finished..

    • Yo tampoco entiendo nada.

We have metric system in europe but not a big deal, i ve seen ultra thin italian 3mm tiles 3m long and 1 m wide 120×40 inches but for bigger than 60 by 60 or 25x25 inches you need floor to be really flat otherwise you need to put alot of glue under it...120x60cm i have in my kitchen, they look like marble stone,beautifull really
