Leveling Up a City & Completing Supply Chains in Manor Lords! | Ep. 3

2024 ж. 22 Сәу.
279 057 Рет қаралды

Our burgeoning community of Waldbrand now has all of the tools to thrive; however, most everything in the community is imported and susceptible to shortages whenever trade becomes backed up. And that makes it really difficult to complete our ultimate goal - taking over all of the lands of the realm and uniting them under our rule.
To resolve this, we're going to build out supply chains and we'll need to grow our city to have families to work in all of our new industries. We'll do this by leveling many of our buildings to level three, while also growing outward a bit. We'll also battle, but in a much more strategic way then we have previously. By the end, we'll have a leveled up city, complete supply chains, and be ready to grow outward into other regions. Enjoy!

  • As someone who grew up in a village founded in 1100's all houses on the kings road face it. Even houses built behind others had access to the kings road. So a long drive allowing you to have a second house behind the first. Along the mile and half that cuts though the village with a village that now has 2000 houses. Every single one along the king's road face to it. If you look at the historical growth of all the villages in most counties in the UK, France, Germany, they mostly expand out from that main road.

    • Yes - we build houses away from arterials now because motor traffic makes them unpleasant, but the practicality of daily life would mean houses should face the King's Road and all the gross stuff done out the back (think outdoor toilets, manure, fermenting urine for laundry) would face away from it.

  • Apparently oxen are best placed near logger camp as they are used the most with relation with logs: pulling in recently cut trees and transporting logs to work sites. Placing them around town will add an extra trip because they must travel to the log camp, pick up logs and then travel to build site (or travel to log camp to help bring in felled trees). Also you can help with food by making some houses produce chicken eggs and carrots. The plot size matters for carrot output

And if that plot is specialized plot like tailor then 4 families are now tailors. So at 9:30 when you made 3 plots tailors, later when you upgrade that will mean you’ll have 6 families as tailors.

  • Also, History/Language Trivia Time! "Sidearms" are basically any melee weapon that isn't a spear or polearm (obviously). That includes swords, maces/clubs and hammers/picks. These weapons were often used with a shield, but they were also carried as a backup weapon for a polearm or such, hence "sidearm". In german, these sidearms were collectively referred to as "gewehr", which is related to a word meaning "to defend". The modern meaning of the word "gewehr" is "rifle", because (as far as I understand) it came to refer to a soldier's primary weapon. I'm simplifying a bit, since I'm writing from memory and also this is a comment, not a Wikipedia article, but anyone with more knowledge on the subject should feel free to fill in. In swedish, "sidearm" was called "värja", which has the same basis as the german "gewehr", meaning "to defend/ward off". When firearms began to appear on battlefields, these to were included in the collective use of "värja". The modern meaning of "värja" is "rapier", i.e. a fairly specific type of sword. I won't get into detail, but there's a lot involved in the the terminology for different swords, and in defining exactly what a rapier is and has been throughout history. That would probably be _several_ Wikipedia articles, and I'm not up for that. That's a different development from the german "gewehr". Swedish does use "gevär" for "rifle", but as far as I know that's a loan word from german. This has no effect on the mechanics of Manor Lord, of course. I just thought you might find it interesting to add a bit of context.

    • I would guess then that something like a claymore would not be considered a sidearm.

      @ralalbatross@ralalbatross9 күн бұрын
    • Some more etymological information, though I'm sure you all could guess, "sidearms" are named as such because those "arms" all had the capability of being carried in a belt loop where as a spear or polearm had to be held.

    • Also the "battle stance" buttons on the left side are no action buttons. They don't order your troops to take action now or stop moving, it's just telling them how to behave in battle. So ordering troops to "hold ground" does not make them stop, also "fall back" does not make them retreat. If you want your troops to take action, you need to command them to make this action. They are useful though as in a bigger battle you could tell your center troops to fall back while having your flanks to hold ground or push so you can better surround the enemy.

  • Glad to see the strategy from stream seemed to improve the combat! I'm guessing once you start declaring wars, the opposing armies are going to be hardier. A couple of things I noticed: 4:30 -- It looks like the weapons and armor are not consumed when creating units, so if you only have 25 spears in storage, you will only be able to have a maximum of 25 spearmen. This might mean, as your armies get larger, you'll need more general storage just for weapons. Also, keep this in mind when you switch to "Full Trade" and start exporting military stuff. Don't want to accidentally sell all of your spears or something! 13:25 -- Did you rebuild the farms somewhere else off-screen? I'm guessing the reason you ended up with food issues was because those farms were a majority producer, in spite of the low fertility. Makes me think the yield might not be so sensitive to the soil fertility, which might mean flax/etc. could still be viable in your current map tile. 29:50 -- Importing lambs is interesting... If you were to set "import lambs" to, say, "keep 100", then set "export sheep" to "keep 0", would this be a money printer? Namely, if it costs nothing but time and a few families to tend to the sheep, after the first 100 lambs grew up, I think you'd have a constant flow of gold as you exported the adult sheep for 20gp apiece, only to replace them with new lambs for 10gp apiece. 30:30 -- I was wondering about this during the stream: so it _does_ look like there is some mechanical impact of having multiple trading posts. Good to know! Also, I think all of those trades that occurred with no employees makes me wonder if the trades happen automatically and the employees only go and fetch the trade products. I wonder if you were to stock a trading post, then remove all of the assigned families, whether the stock would still get traded. 46:46 -- It looks like the foreign carts are separate buildings (next to the market tool, which you can see just after 46:48, before getting covered by the Marketplace tool-tip). If I understand the usage, as long as you have local wealth, then families will exchange local wealth for food/fuel when supplies are low. [Mechanically, I really like this, since it sort of lets you use your local wealth as a safety-net for necessities. I imagine this will help soften logistics issues in the end-game when you should have tons of local wealth, but might run into logistics bottlenecks once local trade networks get complex.] Thanks, Phil, for the fantastic videos! I'll try my best to make it to the stream Thursday. Looking forward to seeing the Great Ale War!

    • 1 - Good point! I want to trade some of the weapons, but I think I need to be careful about that. 2 - I didn't. In the next one, we're building a farming village that will provide food for the whole region (if it's even needed....) 3 - I'm going to take your advice and switch it in the next one. The recording was finished, but the audio is bad in the second half so I have to redo it. Look out and see what happens! 4 - It seems as though there is, but it's difficult to quantify right now. I think you're right about how it works - there are some "variety" traders that will come even when a route isn't purchased, and I think they will spawn extras with additional posts (as best as I can tell anyway). I think you're half right about the workers - they also open up stands selling traded goods at the market, so without them I think those end up empty, too... so twice the bad news. 5 - Oh man, you're right! I'll have to give that one a go in the next video, too! Great catch! And the stream is going to be epic! I think I may have made a pretty tragic mistake though... but more on that Thursday!

  • Hey, Phil. I really strongly suggests that if you want to fix this whole food storage problem to just build a butt. Tone of fields around your settlement cause. That's how medieval villages were. You had 3 times as much land taking up in farmland that that you did the actual city. It will really help your food situation. And it will look more historically accurate, just saying, kill 2 birds, one steam ugly, she're interfrip. Instead of planting war trees, it's time to plant the field and another field and fact free war. You need the farm land.

  • The development points are region specific. So when you start a settlement in a new region, that region will start with no development points spent or earned; and it will get its own development points as it grows. So you can specialize each region. Make one a farming settlement, another a mining settlement and a third be a trade settlement.

You'll find winning battles to be almost guarteed when you understand unit controls, height and cover advtanages, etc etc. Your troops won't automatically engage enemies, hence why your archers just kept walking while they were under attack at the start of the video. They need to be positioned and ordered to attack. Sorry if my comment seems patronising, trying to help!

Use your cheap spearmen as a shield wall, keep your retinue and other poleaxe type infantry on the flanks and behind, and keep archers directly behind both. Wait for the spears to engage, and then flank around with your heavy infantry while never allowing archers to enter melee. All the best.

    • One Proud Bavarian's latest video explained how to create a manorial walled town. The sequence of steps is crucial: you cannot add town buildings after the wall is built, but any town buildings present before the wall is *planned* become unclickable and can't be upgraded. 1) Build the manor. 2) In castle planner, plan but don't build the wall - first expand the circumference with the little planned guard towers so it's big enough to encompass the town. 3) Build the whole town! 4) Once all the town buildings are built, you can set the city wall to being built, which could take a few years. This way you can still upgrade your city buildings, assign them upgrades etc. Your castle planner doesn't appear to have an option for nested walls, so you won't get a separate wall around the manor itself in such a manorial walled town.

  • OMG, while you were talking about the corpse pit, I had I great idea. This could be a Witcher game. Leaving corpses laying around attracts ghouls or other monsters. You could hire witchers to take care of monsters. Sometimes instead of bandit camps you would get monster spawners in places. Sorceresses would come at later stage to do their own thing.

    @Salmoddi@Salmoddi7 күн бұрын
  • It will depend on the model Manor Lords uses of course, but with Total War for example, trees can be used by both attackers and defenders. Trees can hide units. Tress can reduce the effectiveness of certain units like archers and cavalry. Having a bunch of trees surrounding your populated area is probably why those bandits were able to sneak up on you.

    @AlexanderNecheff@AlexanderNecheff9 күн бұрын
  • It actually tells you where mercenaries you hire will spawn... so if it says they will arrive in X and it's the far side of the map from where you want them, odds on that they won't be useful... Also, for food, lay out a couple of really big plots and have them as vegetable growers. That will really boost your food production.

If your can change your roads to more square configurations...do so. So you can have a market square and a city square. And a business area. Squares are easier to grow with and less problems with roads.😊

  • Something I find interesting is the thought experiment "You wake up 1,000 years in the past. What do you do for employment?" (Handwaving the many other problems with time travel, like language and immunities.) It's an interesting way to understand technology as an emergent phenomenon. I would actually have a good chance at apprenticing myself as a surveyor, as I have some training and experience in manual surveying. Anyway, I think CPP has a pretty good chance at excelling on some royal court. So long as he doesn't set the place on fire. 😂

  • 11:26 Gambeson is not a jacket, but a type of armor, made of thick cloth, like quilted linen, filled with wool, reinforced with bone etc. It's used as a base armor, to protect the torso, upper arms, groin and thighs, and is quite heavy alone, but probably not enough to stop very sharp blades when stabbing, but plenty good for example against a strike from the side, and can be used combined with chainmail for example.
