FILM DESCRIPTION:
Maureen Trant (Emily Warfield) and her younger sibling Dani (Reese Witherspoon) share a strong connection, but local boy Court Foster (Jason London) threatens to throw their bond off balance. Dani and Court meet first and have a flirtatious rapport -- but when he meets Maureen, he falls hard and they begin a passionate affair. The new couple try to keep their love hidden from Dani, but she soon learns the truth, disavowing her sister. But a heartbreaking accident later reunites the girls.

Don't be too sure, there's a closure to having experienced what Dani saw, where as her sister, who gave herself to the boy, is figuratively torn to pieces herself and has to rely on the fact that Dani was the one to bring the news home. It's difficult really to say one is hurting more than the other, and in reality that's what her father was trying to say "maybe more"... he's not making a definitive statement that she IS hurting more, he just wants Dani to recognize that her sister really hurts too.
Truth
Maureen lost her virginity to him and considering the era this was in, thought she was going to marry him eventually. They were serious about each other. Yeah, you can't quantify hurt, but Maureen's loss was real and intense.
i finally understand why they said is hurting more and that is because she knew what she did to her sister and she’ll live with the guilt of knowing what she did. but they did forgive each other in the end of the movie.
A good father knows just what to say, and when to hold his tongue.

The father has no right to say Maureen could “maybe be hurting more” at all he doesn’t know at all how Dani feels deep down and Dani and court hung out a lot more and she had to see him dead

When I saw this movie decades ago I knew that young actress was going places 🙂
It’s almost a shame that when a great actor becomes famous they start doing more commercial films, which certainly pay better but often lack the depth and feeling of movies like this one.

I always loved this movie.
It doesn't matter who got more injured in this incident. The most important message this film wanted to convey is that life is essentially meaningless, and we as humans can only give meaning to this life through our actions, love, forgiveness, and respect for each other.

Eh Maureen swooped in court fell for the charms. Of course Court died. Hard to have sympathy for the older sister she was indirect cause of his death they slept in the woods.

Maureen is hurting more then Dani?! He's wrong! Maureen is not the one who saw Court and his moms arms,covered in blood. How could Dani not freak out? Be scared to death? She saw her first love,the first boy she ever loved unconditionally,DEAD. And Maureen? She took her sister's love away from her without even asking. Maureen knew that Dani was in love with Court and she betrayed her trust. Worse,she ruined her sister relationship with Dani. Maureen has no reason to keep crying the whole time saying that she loved him. No one loved Court the way Dani did. Maureen is NOT THE VICTIM! DANI IS! Period! That's it!
I fell bad for Dani. but Maureen... not so much.
I was thinking that Maureen was hurting more given that she did find a soul mate in Court, but had simultaneously lost a sister due to an impulsive moment. A good thing to remember is that all 3 of them were kids and didn't have the experience or fortitude to properly navigate the situation. I never expected Court and Dani to end up together realistically, but I wish he'd have let her down properly before things took a header.
