Никогда не забуду этот матч. Смотрел в баре и когда матч закончился оказался в самом эпицентре гуляний. Такое ощущение, что вся Москва, не сговариваясь, вывалила на улицу. Все друг друга поздравляли, обнимались, даже если видели друг друга первый раз в жизни - это была такая эйфория.. Жаль, что такие впечатления, остались, и скорее всего, и останутся, далеко в прошлом. Нынешняя сборная никогда не подарит даже одной десятой того праздника.

The best Russian Team I ever know, I really loved how they played in these EUROs in my Home-Country. They played the most spectacular football of all teams in that EURO.. And Players like Pavlyuchenko or Arshavin, or even Anyukov and Zhirkov were so great in these times..

I remember this game ,one the best I watched..I was living in the Netherlands, the Hague..and they put up big screen on the beach,and I was the only Russian guy there ,with my backpack with the Russian flag on it...everyone were so friendly to me ...each time my team would score I had random people getting me a beer!!!! How good was Arshavin??? Fantastic little magician. Flamed out too soon on the world stage. And Pavlyuchenko was excellent too. Then he suffered the Tottenham curse like so many other good players.

Guus' tactic in this game was far better than the dutch team. Netherlands cant even attack with build up play. All they can do is just set pieces and non dangerous long shots.

I remember that night after the game, the whole city went on streets. It was like a New Year celebration. Netherlands were and still are one of the best national teams out there and defeating them made us so proud for our boys. Damn, how time flies, I was only 9 back then

Fun fact: Russia qualified to this Euro only because Croatia beat England at Wembley 3-2. Before last matchup, Croatia already secured their spot on Euro 2008., and England needed a point after a very weak performances in qualifying round. Mladen Petrić made it 3-2 and push England off Euro. I am so glad because I am Croat, I don't like England and this russian generation deseved to play on major tournament.

After the game we went out, wanted to buy some beer and the shop literally was overcrowded. And streets were full of happy people cheering each other. It was a night when Russian people were as united as never before. Thanks to that team, thanks to Guus Hiddink!

In the last few days I watched a lot of highlights from old games and came to the conclusion that until a few years ago players weren't as reluctant as players today to just hit the ball from long range. It has became rarer nowadays.
The game was more intense and better then today

I agree with your observation. I think this is due to football and tactics evolving a lot in last decade or so. Today more teams put pressure on their opponents, tempo and intensity is much higher, meaning there is less time and space for player on the ball. Remember this is still before all that Spain nt domination, Guardiola's era at Barcelona, Klopp with his gegenpressing to only mention a few things that influenced the game in a major way (more pressure, less space, higher back lines, more compactness). Also from what i remember footballs they made around that time were known for their weird unpredictable trajectories and speeds when taking shoots from distance. This was literally a nightmare for any goalkeeper. So that also might have been a big factor why they made more attempts to score like this.

I think two main reasons are a) defending teams simply defend with more quantity and quality, so the attackers do not really have that much of open space to get a good shot as they used to; and b) (as a cosequence of the point a) attacking teams are more conservative with keeping posession - if youre counter-atacking you can just quickly get as close to the goal as possible and make it a better opportunity and if youre in positioning attack, you can just slowly search for the right chance, keeping opponent on their toes which is better than trying luck with a slight chance of scoring from afar. UPD: Just watching these higlights really shows just how much better teams defend these days. I mean, just check out positioning on 12:03, theres a totally unmarked player right in front of the goal and its not like theyre losing and the whole team is on the opponents half, it's a tie at that point. Also it's Netherlands - actually one of the best national teams of that age. By today's standarts teams playing like that would be punished so so often for that mistakes. UPD2: I just realised that on 12:03 theres not one, not two but THREE pass options in a penalty box, all of them in a goalscoring positions.
I hope Russia can build a strong team like this again.
