  • I always look forward to Saturday and your lovely videos captain. The weather looked much nicer than what we have here in the UK at the moment. I love it when I can watch in 4K, so nice and clear. You seem to have a very varied amount of routes, life must be very interesting for you. Thank you for allowing us to watch your landings and take-offs.

  • I can't speak for anyone else but if I ever fly Eurowings and I happen to meet this captain by chance I'm just going to be shaking the man's hand and saying thank you for putting out these videos for people to see. Engagement between everyone from ground, Tower, first officer just makes you appreciate what these Pilots do...I'll stick to flight simulator! Fantastic quality and you can learn a little too. Keep up the good work. Probably the only channel I would consider donating a patreon or something towards.

    • Thank you very much for watching, for sharing your personal experience, and for the good feedback! How long the approaches are is based on the amount of traffic and on the cockpit crews. If traffic permits, a visual approach is the shortest option.

  • Brilliant as always! This video, especially the first 15 minutes or so would answer that most common of question: 'what happens if a plane loses both its engines?' A steady glide as shown above! Although I'm not sure if any power was used in the first 15 minutes, but it didn't seem like any was needed. I find energy management during flight way more interesting than I should! Safe travels and thanks again for your contribution to the aviation enthusiast 'community'!

    • Thank you so much for watching and the detailed thoughts! A big part of the approach was flown with idle thrust. Ideally we fly with idle thrust and no speedbrakes until about 1000 feet above the threshold. This is the most efficient approach. But a lot of times ATC is giving us a longer approach than expected or we have to slow down early. Energy management is really important. Well done energy management can save lots of fuel. All the best to you! Have a great day!

  • For all those who want to know the reason for the long displaced threshold: As far as I know, the land just in front of the runway doesn't belong to the airport. As they want to accommodate a full CAT I ILS approach lighting system (length 900m) for this direction, they do so on the runway (i.e. soil that belongs to the airport). So they won't want let planes land on that (probably). There's also a last part of the runway that's also unsuitable for landing, as it's designated to be a stopway. Sonst, wie immer, ein super Video! Vielen Dank dafür! Erinnert mich an meinen FFS Flug gestern ;)

    @J.Stein1@J.Stein1 Жыл бұрын
    • Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I always wondered why this threshold is displaced that far. Thanks again and have a good day!

      @ApproachandDepartureVideos@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
    • J. Stein - just an observation and you may well be correct, but there is no reason why aircraft can't land on the (flush fitting) approach lighting system - it's done all the time with displaced runway thresholds at other locations throughout the world and, of course, CAT III touchdown zone lighting barettes are there for just that purpose. Looking at the video again I suggest that the building development smack on and to the right of centreline at 0.8NM DME probably infringes the Instrument Approach Clearance planes and Visual Approach Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS) being so close in to the runway end. And is there a mast of sorts in the quadrangle that could be the 'dominant obstacle'? As the OLS criteria are so shallow in the vertical plane it doesn't take much OLS penetration to require the threshold to be displaced very significantly.

    • Thanks for watching and the good feedback! As you can hear in our briefing, we were cleared for the TERTO 7S arrival. There are different transitions to the final approach available. One version is a shorter approach via DEMEX and the other option is the full approach via SOTAD. The displaced threshold gives the runway a strange look. And - as you said - it looks like that you are way too high on short final.

The night approach and landing into Heathrow in December was one of the best flight deck videos I've ever watched on KZhead, and at 4K it was mesmerising. Of course despite the entertainment aspect of it I'm sure if was far from that for you gentlemen landing in that dense soup. Would it be within the realm of possibility for you to film more of those style of night videos in the future? Thankyou Happy flying.

    • Thanks for watching and your wishes! Also a Happy New Year to you. The Heathrow approach you refer to was even very special to us. It combined a night approach with great views of the city with a CAT 3 autoland procedure in foggy conditions at the runway. This was a unique situation. I am always interested in capturing interesting approaches with my cameras. But it is completely unpredictable. Please stay tuned for more videos and have a nice day!

    @GeorgeLumkin@GeorgeLumkin Жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for the great feedback! The pilot flying decides on the basis of own experiences if he or she wants to fly the approach with autothrust on or off. Airbus recmmends the use of autothrust during all phases of flight, even during manual flight. Every pilot has to be proficient in flying the approach with and even without autothrust. To achieve this, we have to do both once in a while. Your statement about my usage of autothrust during visual approaches is not correct. During those approaches I usually use autothrust. Please watch my Samos, Funchal, Kos .. approaches. Have a nice day!

  • Thank you for another great video Captain. If I may ask about the atc - It is obvious that allowing pilots to turn down their radios might prevent them from hearing a crucial message, yet it would seem almost impossible to conduct a briefing if all comms come through the headset at the same volume. So, to what extent can pilots alter the volumes of cockpit / atc in their headsets, or is it fixed to some relative value? Thanks again for providing such a wonderful perspective for us non-pilots!

    @mehashi@mehashi Жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for watching and the good feedback! Both pilots have the possibilty to alter independently the volume of any radio, the cockpit interphone and the cabin interphone. If we do a briefing, sometimes we have to stop in between or even restart again because ATC or the cabin called. Even if we brief or talk on the flight deck, we always listen to ATC in parallel.

  • Another interesting video - many thanks. The displaced landing point on the runway was very odd - do planes taking off need a longer run, or is it to get landing planes to the terminal turnoffs quicker ---- or is it just the engineering of the runway? Interested to know. As a bit of feed back to your video, the visibility of the instruments is as good as you have done, and they are now very clear. This time, though, the sound was a bit difficult. The ATC chatter was a bit too strong, and it was difficult to hear what you were saying - especially in the early stages of the approach. Small point, and I guess it gives an insight into what it must be like for you on your headphones.

      @BaconAndPotatoCorp@BaconAndPotatoCorp Жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for watching and the very detailed feedback! The displaced threshold is only relevant for landing airplanes. Reasons for moving the threshold are usually obstacles in the approach area or noise abatement for the people living close to the airport. For takeoff, the full runway length is available. You can see that very good in the video: During our approach, there are planes waiting near the beginning of the runway. I agree about the audio. I am also not happy with the audio. I try to improve the quality over the next time. I plan some audio equipment changes and hope that this will help. It may take a while. Please stay tuned. Have a wonderful day!

    @Ryjano@Ryjano Жыл бұрын
    • Danke fürs Anschauen und das Feedback! Warum der Pistenanfang für die Landung um 1000 Meter versetzt ist, weiß ich auch nicht. Entweder hat es mit Hindernissen im Anflug oder mit der Verringerung des Lärms für den Anflugbereich zu tun. Den gleichen Effekt würde man ja auch mit einem steileren Anflug erreichen, der dann aber direkt an der Schwelle endet.

  • ATC will be working on the principle that sequencing the arrivals at X miles apart (= Y minutes at routine allocated airspeeds) will permit optimum runway occupancy time: ie landing clearance for arrival, conditional line up and wait; continue approach for next arrival; runway vacated by arrival; take off clearance for departure; runway vacated by departure; landing clearance for next arrival - and so on. Therefore, my question for Approach and Departures is: Given the sophistication of modern FMSs, if you were given a TIME to be at the Initial Approach Fix (IAF), can you input that into the FMS so that the FMS manages the approach profile to be at the IAF (or other convenient waypoint) at the correct altitude, speed and time? This would provide a basic but accurate arrival sequence that ATC could tactically 'tweak' to fit local variations (eg twin turbos on approach or a lull in the departure sequence).

    @concise707@concise707 Жыл бұрын
    • Good question! Yes, we can set a time constraint at a waypoint. With managed speed, the airplane tries to arrive at the waypoint as close as possible to that time. We do this once in a while when ATC gives us an expected approach time or when the destination airport opens or closes at a certain time. During the approach, separation is usually done by ATC speed and heading instructions.

    • @@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thanks for the prompt response! 👍. As an ex-military ATCO we used the time-at-IAF (+/- 20 seconds) sequencing method (called ASLAR - No, I don't remember what the acronym stood for - it was many moons ago!) for 'mass' recoveries following (simulated!) operational sorties. It worked quite well - but there was always That Guy who Got IT Wrong (🤭) requiring the time-honoured rapid application of vectoring, altitude separation, sweat and sheer cunning to get things re-sequenced. Great satisfaction - I miss it desperately! Good vids by the way - I can re-live my professional life vicariously through them!
