I think the free-choice gym makes sense because, in the pokemon world, there are trainers who start their journey from towns or cities more advanced than the first village of the main character. Imagine if every npc started from Pallet Town, that wouldn't make much sense right?

yeah not a fan of this. Why cant they just let us ride pokemon we catch like in lets go. Fly etc sucked there, but at least you could catch a shiny rapidash and ride it. They always strike out in this aspect in the main games for whatever reason, but at least the clown suit is gone.

I feel like the hill to climb after Arceus is huge, I really liked the independence aspect of the game, the catching mechanics that didn't require you to battle, and no forced encounter in tall grass, which allowed you to see the wild Pokémon. These new games seem to have kept some of these, so I'm eager to find out how it will pan out.

I love that they went with a school as a major setting for this! Makes me so nostalgic. There was that school building in Sun and Moon, and it got expanded upon in the anime. But the last time Pokémon had something to this scale was in Shadows of Almia, which I liked a lot. I hope they have an increased focus on some RPG elements in this, especially since there's multiplayer. It would definitely be a new direction for the mainline games. A school can be a pretty good (and easy) way to give some structure to any story or quest. Plus exploring any campus is always fun, like it was in Persona or Fire Emblem.

Yeah, it would have made a bit more sense if they didn't have the crowns except for very special ones (like Flying Pikachu) and instead had the type symbol glowing faintly above or behind the gem covered Pokemon

I don't mind them trying different gimmicks, I just wish they'd try and work with previous ones more. I like z-moves a little too, even though theyre not all that special, it would be interesting to see them fight for relevance with Mega Evolution. Rather than existing only in mutually exclusive games.

I personally, hate both z-moves and gigamax, but I loved mega evolution. It would've been a lot more interesting to me if gen 7 had a different kind of gimmick and mega evolution came back in gen 8 and 9. As if the ultimate weapon affected the nearby regions to a lesser degree

My speculation about the other two story-lines are: -one will revolve around Terastalising -the other will focus on the past/future theme and the legendaries. Also, each rival could be related to each story-line. Nemona is a battler, so she'll be your rival in the gym challenge. Penny, and Arven will be the rivals for the other two stories. (only confident about Nemona's role yet.)

As a poor young adult unable to both afford cost of living and every new console, thank you SO much for giving us affordable apps. Pokemon Go is a go to after long work days, a blast of nostalgia and an incentive to get outside and walk when I don't want to face the world. I personally will get Violet. My favourite colour is Purple, and I'd choose futuristic Pokemon over prehistoric Pokemon. So I guess it's a win-win for me. (Read online somewhere that region exclusives will be the forms, so prehistorics and futuristics will appear in Scarlet and Violet respectively, idk about other exclusives)

Really looking forward to these games definitely getting Violet. The designs of the Pokémon and NPCs are so good and the gimmick looks cool as well. Only thing I don’t like about the gimmick is the hats each Pokémon have on their head when they change to certain types but I’m sure it’ll grow on me.

Z-moves and Dynamax are not present too. The Tera thing is like Dynamax but with extra steps. They could just make an another Dynamax game but add z-moves and megas.

There's also no sign of the catching mechanics from Arceus. Which a lot of us were expecting in the beginning, but it's increasingly unlikely. Also the ability to evolve trade pokemon with an item instead of trading, the ability to swap out moves whenever you want instead of going to a move tutor to remember moves, and so on. There are so many new things introduced in Arceus that I hope they keep for this... but they probably won't.

I love the crystal Pokémon! They remind me of the crystal figurines my parents used to collect when I was a child, so they have a nostalgic effect on me. Which makes sense since the people working on these games now are probably my age give or take 5-10 years.

I absolutely love how this game is shaping up, from the open world RPG to the different adventure options to the new Terra types. Given the fast turnaround though, I just hope that the dev team aren't been pushed to crunch; a good pokemon game is worth waiting for if it means a quality game AND well-treated employees.

It feels like it'll be kind of building on some of the Pokémon Legends Arceus stuff (whether it's the same base engine or not I have no clue, but I doubt they're starting completely from scratch for it with the games being this close together). The legendaries are basically the 4 main ride Pokémon combined into one (maybe even all 5 if they have treasure sensors), and the open world aspect is similar to PLA.

I think they're just using broad language to make it sound more innovative than it really is. I always knew that World Championships were a thing, but I never fully appreciated the depth and scope of the community & how dedicated these players are to their craft. It makes me so happy to see that this franchise has evolved along with its community to the point where globally-scaled events like this are possible, bringing together people from all walks of life who share the same love of their little pocket monsters. Pokemon has and always will hold a special place in my heart--I hope my 3-month old son will also grow up loving it too.

So far, I'm liking what I'm seeing with these games. The 3 stories concept sounds interesting, challenging the gyms in any order is going to be interesting, the legendaries being the main ride Pokemon is interesting, going to an academy certainly shakes things up from the traditional Pokemon formula, being completely open world is nice, and the new gimmick is...I'm not too sure how to feel about it. Gonna need more information on it, otherwise it just looks...weird (I like the concept of changing types mid battle tho. Very reminiscent of Pokemon like Zen Mode Darmanitan and megas that gave certain Pokemon a type change, such as Charizard X becoming fire/dragon). Overall, I'm very impressed. Another thing I'd like to point out is how good the graphics look so far. I'm not someone who really cares about graphics in games, but this is certainly a step up from SWSH and Legends Arceus. Some things I do hope they keep tho is some of the competitive and evolution quality of life changes that were brought in gen 8. SWSH, despite it's flaws, was the EASIEST Pokemon game to get into competitively, and Legends Arceus made it so that we don't need to trade anymore (it was so refreshing and cool to see that Pokemon like Magmortar and Steelix didn't need to hold an item and be traded and that rather you use items like the steel coat or magmorizer like a stone, and it's nice to see the link cable item exist. For too long have trade evolutions been the bane of my existence when completing the pokedex).

Yep by now national dex shouldn't be a problem, at all. I understand if the old gbc games or even gba games had like 1k pokemon and they couldn't add them all or something but we are up to the switch.. 1k pokemon can definitely happen. Don't necessarily have to catch them all in routes. They can figure other ways, they just decide not to try.

Don’t know where you’re getting 1k Pokémon on gbc and gba games. GBA games were R/S/E/FR/LG and at that time there were only 386 Pokémon. Completing the National Dex was one of the most satisfying achievements in any Pokémon game, right next to Battle Frontier symbols and prints, Battle Subway trophies, and PWT and there’s nothing like those anymore.

I like a lot of the changes I see. The only thing I didn't really like is that the legendaries only seem like a Pokémon designed to be a multi-tool for something that Arceus solved with other Pokémon. I feel like it loses the value and excitement around encountering, catching and owning a legendary. However, I won't let this skepticism hinder me from giving it a second thought once I play it.

That teratalize thing is gonna be super strong, I don't even know Pokemon competitive strats but I could bet that we'll see people farming for Pokemon with a specific tera type like the ghost nincada that is invincible to all but one type you'll see people getting one that becomes immune to all damage or an electric type Hitmonchan that uses Thunder Punch and gets the s.t.a.b. boost.

Could be that each Pokemon only has a few available types, could be that it modifies the 1st/2nd type, or it could even add a 3rd type. Don't really know yet. I love this pokemon direct and I'm super hyped for all of the upcoming pokemon content and for the scarlet and violet game's and with the three stories in game it means I'm going built a team for each story just like i did in sword and shield where I used my main team for the story and I used a different team in the Isle of armor and a different team for the grown tundra so my scarlet and violet teams are going to play a big role in my journey to become a pokemon master and to catch them all

Honestly, I'm glad they're making this open-world since Arceus proved that was the route to go for the future of the franchise with its massive success. I'm getting Z-move vibes from the Terastal gimmick. I hope they keep Suprise/Wondertrade. I love some of the new Pokemon. I'm interested; everyone talks about how they want to see the evil team? Maybe the Pokemon franchise is trying to shake it up and have the story be about something entirely different? Like for once the adults of the region WON'T make children go up against terrorists?

I'd like to see a game where you can go to ALL the regions, save the world once or twice, but just travel at your own pace. Would be nice to have the whole team rainbow thing back, but most of the grunts were just regular rocket grunts. maybe spice it up a bit, with a new evil team as the leader; maybe make the leader the previous champion.

I mean, there *are* going to be 3 stories, and evil teams are kind of a given in the series, I'm sure they'll make it one of the storylines, although lately the evil teams haven't even really *been* evil, unless you count the "oooo they seemed like good people but what an oh-so-surprising twist they're actually the villain!" evil teams, which aren't an actual problem throughout most of the game

no it doesn't exactly give a third type. when crystalized, the mon loses it's types for a new mono type, losing STAB and losing resistances. im sure clef wouldn't want to change types, but for mons like avalugg, being able to just become a steel type is huge

I'm going to be cautious before judging competitive Pokemon moving forward. Pokemon Legends battle system was reduced into a very lite form, with only a handful of familiar moves and no abilities. It remains to be seen whether they adopt that battle system moving forward.

Love the addition of the terratypes and terrastralization. Not a fan of the designs that come on top like the flowers or balloons, but still really cool to see the Pokemon in "gem form" because it reminds me of Houseki no Kuni.
I think the free-choice gym makes sense because, in the pokemon world, there are trainers who start their journey from towns or cities more advanced than the first village of the main character. Imagine if every npc started from Pallet Town, that wouldn't make much sense right?
When you put it that way it makes way more sense. Imagine starting out in say cinnabar Island back in the day. You'd be screwed

I think those wheels are specifically used for climbing purposes. They're grooved in such a way that they would cling to cliffsides.

yeah not a fan of this. Why cant they just let us ride pokemon we catch like in lets go. Fly etc sucked there, but at least you could catch a shiny rapidash and ride it. They always strike out in this aspect in the main games for whatever reason, but at least the clown suit is gone.
Fun fact: Wooper becoming a poison/ground type means it's the first Poison/Ground type since the Nido lines and that also leaves the Gastly line as the only remaining Gen 1 Pokemon with an exclusive type combination

I feel like the hill to climb after Arceus is huge, I really liked the independence aspect of the game, the catching mechanics that didn't require you to battle, and no forced encounter in tall grass, which allowed you to see the wild Pokémon. These new games seem to have kept some of these, so I'm eager to find out how it will pan out.

I love that they went with a school as a major setting for this! Makes me so nostalgic. There was that school building in Sun and Moon, and it got expanded upon in the anime. But the last time Pokémon had something to this scale was in Shadows of Almia, which I liked a lot. I hope they have an increased focus on some RPG elements in this, especially since there's multiplayer. It would definitely be a new direction for the mainline games. A school can be a pretty good (and easy) way to give some structure to any story or quest. Plus exploring any campus is always fun, like it was in Persona or Fire Emblem.

Yeah, it would have made a bit more sense if they didn't have the crowns except for very special ones (like Flying Pikachu) and instead had the type symbol glowing faintly above or behind the gem covered Pokemon
I don't mind them trying different gimmicks, I just wish they'd try and work with previous ones more. I like z-moves a little too, even though theyre not all that special, it would be interesting to see them fight for relevance with Mega Evolution. Rather than existing only in mutually exclusive games.

I personally, hate both z-moves and gigamax, but I loved mega evolution. It would've been a lot more interesting to me if gen 7 had a different kind of gimmick and mega evolution came back in gen 8 and 9. As if the ultimate weapon affected the nearby regions to a lesser degree

My speculation about the other two story-lines are: -one will revolve around Terastalising -the other will focus on the past/future theme and the legendaries. Also, each rival could be related to each story-line. Nemona is a battler, so she'll be your rival in the gym challenge. Penny, and Arven will be the rivals for the other two stories. (only confident about Nemona's role yet.)
One will deal around Pokemon racing, they showed a piece of what looks like a racing circuit or track.

As a poor young adult unable to both afford cost of living and every new console, thank you SO much for giving us affordable apps. Pokemon Go is a go to after long work days, a blast of nostalgia and an incentive to get outside and walk when I don't want to face the world. I've even met people playing raids in the same situations and had a good laugh. New quests and Pokemon for this app is like Christmas every content drop. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Looking at what they said about there being "other stories" alongside the typical gym & league challenge makes me even more curious about how the scarlet/violet anime will play out
I laughed a lot when I saw Koraidon doggy paddling in the water. Overall, I cannot wait for the game to come out. I'll officially choose which version to get depending on the exclusive pokemon.
I personally will get Violet. My favourite colour is Purple, and I'd choose futuristic Pokemon over prehistoric Pokemon. So I guess it's a win-win for me. (Read online somewhere that region exclusives will be the forms, so prehistorics and futuristics will appear in Scarlet and Violet respectively, idk about other exclusives)

Calling it now: Clavell is the antagonist who set up the school to be like in the book Holes where he has students go looking for treasure for him as a "class" but is really just trying to use them to hunt do artifacts for his plan.
Ngl I got the villain vibe from him too. Might be cool to have a more smaller-scale plot for once, maybe there's corruption within the school board you need to weed out or something like that

This game seems to have a lot going for it, three storylines sounds like great idea (at least on paper) as it would give both fans that want a more traditional pokemon game and those who want something fresh.
I mean most the Pokémon games have at least 2. Becoming the Champ and the Evil team, with the third usually being in post game

Really looking forward to these games definitely getting Violet. The designs of the Pokémon and NPCs are so good and the gimmick looks cool as well. Only thing I don’t like about the gimmick is the hats each Pokémon have on their head when they change to certain types but I’m sure it’ll grow on me.
“We’ve kept all the things you love about Pokémon” except mega evolution lol. That aside, I hope this turns out well. This game is unlike the many that came before it so I hope those changes pay off. If nothing else, I saw Mareep in the grass and that’s something I’m excited for
Z-moves and Dynamax are not present too. The Tera thing is like Dynamax but with extra steps. They could just make an another Dynamax game but add z-moves and megas.
There's also no sign of the catching mechanics from Arceus. Which a lot of us were expecting in the beginning, but it's increasingly unlikely. Also the ability to evolve trade pokemon with an item instead of trading, the ability to swap out moves whenever you want instead of going to a move tutor to remember moves, and so on. There are so many new things introduced in Arceus that I hope they keep for this... but they probably won't.

I love the crystal Pokémon! They remind me of the crystal figurines my parents used to collect when I was a child, so they have a nostalgic effect on me. Which makes sense since the people working on these games now are probably my age give or take 5-10 years.

I absolutely love how this game is shaping up, from the open world RPG to the different adventure options to the new Terra types. Given the fast turnaround though, I just hope that the dev team aren't been pushed to crunch; a good pokemon game is worth waiting for if it means a quality game AND well-treated employees.

It feels like it'll be kind of building on some of the Pokémon Legends Arceus stuff (whether it's the same base engine or not I have no clue, but I doubt they're starting completely from scratch for it with the games being this close together). The legendaries are basically the 4 main ride Pokémon combined into one (maybe even all 5 if they have treasure sensors), and the open world aspect is similar to PLA.
The branching story lines is a great touch. I really wish they had done that with the contests in the games. It would have made the new mechanic back then more useful. I am liking what I am seeing with these games. It looks like they listened to alot of what fans were saying.
Finally I can kill every single Pokémon
The crystallized Pokémon are so pretty! I’m glad this seems to be something every Pokémon can use instead of just a few. I’m excited about the game being open world and curious about the other stories. I suppose one must be the path to acquiring your legendary partner and the other is probably this treasure hunt.
This seems like the one I’ve been waiting for. Time to get back into Pokémon!!

I love the trailer and the crystal Pokemon, the new wooper forms, Fidough and the legendaries being bikes I'm so excited about Scarlet and Violet this trailer is great.
I'm very excited! I received this delightful need on the first day after I turned 30. Or. world play, new options, non-linear gyms! I'm glad Pokemon decided to spice up their relationship with us.
The crystal mechanic gives a whole new meaning to shiny now. If Rayquaza is in this some how, his shiny is going to be interesting.
I always knew that World Championships were a thing, but I never fully appreciated the depth and scope of the community & how dedicated these players are to their craft. It makes me so happy to see that this franchise has evolved along with its community to the point where globally-scaled events like this are possible, bringing together people from all walks of life who share the same love of their little pocket monsters. Pokemon has and always will hold a special place in my heart--I hope my 3-month old son will also grow up loving it too.

So far, I'm liking what I'm seeing with these games. The 3 stories concept sounds interesting, challenging the gyms in any order is going to be interesting, the legendaries being the main ride Pokemon is interesting, going to an academy certainly shakes things up from the traditional Pokemon formula, being completely open world is nice, and the new gimmick is...I'm not too sure how to feel about it. Gonna need more information on it, otherwise it just looks...weird (I like the concept of changing types mid battle tho. Very reminiscent of Pokemon like Zen Mode Darmanitan and megas that gave certain Pokemon a type change, such as Charizard X becoming fire/dragon). Overall, I'm very impressed. Another thing I'd like to point out is how good the graphics look so far. I'm not someone who really cares about graphics in games, but this is certainly a step up from SWSH and Legends Arceus. Some things I do hope they keep tho is some of the competitive and evolution quality of life changes that were brought in gen 8. SWSH, despite it's flaws, was the EASIEST Pokemon game to get into competitively, and Legends Arceus made it so that we don't need to trade anymore (it was so refreshing and cool to see that Pokemon like Magmortar and Steelix didn't need to hold an item and be traded and that rather you use items like the steel coat or magmorizer like a stone, and it's nice to see the link cable item exist. For too long have trade evolutions been the bane of my existence when completing the pokedex).

Finally Deerling and sawsbuck return in the game! I'm so excited to see them again beside seeing in the new snap game! I really hope Flabebe return as well and a new eeveelutions!✨

Yep by now national dex shouldn't be a problem, at all. I understand if the old gbc games or even gba games had like 1k pokemon and they couldn't add them all or something but we are up to the switch.. 1k pokemon can definitely happen. Don't necessarily have to catch them all in routes. They can figure other ways, they just decide not to try.
I love gen 5 sprites and battle frontier-esque challenges.
I don't care about national dex one bit, and realistically I only used like 2 mega evolutions That's just me personally

Don’t know where you’re getting 1k Pokémon on gbc and gba games. GBA games were R/S/E/FR/LG and at that time there were only 386 Pokémon. Completing the National Dex was one of the most satisfying achievements in any Pokémon game, right next to Battle Frontier symbols and prints, Battle Subway trophies, and PWT and there’s nothing like those anymore.

I like a lot of the changes I see. The only thing I didn't really like is that the legendaries only seem like a Pokémon designed to be a multi-tool for something that Arceus solved with other Pokémon. I feel like it loses the value and excitement around encountering, catching and owning a legendary. However, I won't let this skepticism hinder me from giving it a second thought once I play it.

There COULD be a third legendary that we haven't been shown yet, i.e. zygarde, eternatus, etc. That could be the third adventure they mentioned. The second obviously being the "villain" team

They didn’t. The game’s visuals are so terrible, something the Wii can compete with. At 16:49 you can even see a mouse at the top left, if that doesn’t show utter laziness idk what will lol

That teratalize thing is gonna be super strong, I don't even know Pokemon competitive strats but I could bet that we'll see people farming for Pokemon with a specific tera type like the ghost nincada that is invincible to all but one type you'll see people getting one that becomes immune to all damage or an electric type Hitmonchan that uses Thunder Punch and gets the s.t.a.b. boost.
I'd wager shedinja will be on this year's Dex chopping block for precisely that reason.

@@defjarebear6610 We still don't know how terastilising (hidden power) works. Could be that each Pokemon only has a few available types, could be that it modifies the 1st/2nd type, or it could even add a 3rd type. Don't really know yet. Other crazy combos like bug+steel, ghost+normal, ghost+dark exist and only have 1 weakness

gardevoir is literally my favorite pokemon the special attack and defense is what I always want to go with I love having in my team
I love this pokemon direct and I'm super hyped for all of the upcoming pokemon content and for the scarlet and violet game's and with the three stories in game it means I'm going built a team for each story just like i did in sword and shield where I used my main team for the story and I used a different team in the Isle of armor and a different team for the grown tundra so my scarlet and violet teams are going to play a big role in my journey to become a pokemon master and to catch them all
Really looking forward to three stories to complete; I hope they also keep the sidequests tracker from PLA! Also the fur textures on the models look amazing, esp arcanine.
Honestly, I'm glad they're making this open-world since Arceus proved that was the route to go for the future of the franchise with its massive success. I'm getting Z-move vibes from the Terastal gimmick. I hope they keep Suprise/Wondertrade. I love some of the new Pokemon. I'm interested; everyone talks about how they want to see the evil team? Maybe the Pokemon franchise is trying to shake it up and have the story be about something entirely different? Like for once the adults of the region WON'T make children go up against terrorists?

I'd like to see a game where you can go to ALL the regions, save the world once or twice, but just travel at your own pace. Would be nice to have the whole team rainbow thing back, but most of the grunts were just regular rocket grunts. maybe spice it up a bit, with a new evil team as the leader; maybe make the leader the previous champion.
I mean, there *are* going to be 3 stories, and evil teams are kind of a given in the series, I'm sure they'll make it one of the storylines, although lately the evil teams haven't even really *been* evil, unless you count the "oooo they seemed like good people but what an oh-so-surprising twist they're actually the villain!" evil teams, which aren't an actual problem throughout most of the game

Wow. The competitive meta is going to be crazy. Being able to just switch your type mid battle to one other type is an interesting idea. It effectively gives Pokemon a third type without... Actually giving them a third type

no it doesn't exactly give a third type. when crystalized, the mon loses it's types for a new mono type, losing STAB and losing resistances. im sure clef wouldn't want to change types, but for mons like avalugg, being able to just become a steel type is huge

I'm going to be cautious before judging competitive Pokemon moving forward. Pokemon Legends battle system was reduced into a very lite form, with only a handful of familiar moves and no abilities. It remains to be seen whether they adopt that battle system moving forward.

my only complaint is the fact they really think every generation needs an extra battle gimmick that only lasts 1 generation then gets dumped, why couldn't we just keep mega evolution and call it a day
Literally, mega evolution I the only gimmick that matters. All these new gimics just make the lore unrealistic and disjointed. X and Y was the perfect pokemon game (my opinion). The graphics, gimic, gameplay and fashion were on point in that game

Love the addition of the terratypes and terrastralization. Not a fan of the designs that come on top like the flowers or balloons, but still really cool to see the Pokemon in "gem form" because it reminds me of Houseki no Kuni.
