  • Don't reel in your large live baits to "check" them. Just grab the line and give a little tug to see if it tugs back and is still alive. If you keep reeling it in and casting it, that will sometimes cause it to dislodge or kill it by slamming it onto the waters surface. Leave it sit unless you are moving to another spot. Sometimes it takes a large fish a long time to find your bait. Occasionally tugging slightly on your line will make your live bait active and attract large predatory fish. Just make sure you don't do it hard enough to tear off your live offering.

If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.

Sometimes they go back to the same place you initially hooked them at or at least stay within the same area so even if you dont cast to the same exact spot, you run the chance of hooking them a second or third time.

  • Circle hooks are counter intuitive, you have to just wait for them to take the bait and then you do not set the hook. You reel down and then maintain pressure. Let the hook do what it’s designed to do. Setting the hook on a circle hook will pull the bait out of their mouths every time. Good luck and tight lines!

    • Yeah it's different for sure. C hooks are a fickle beast. If set the hook about 85% the time you missed that fish. Hubby and I are mainly bass and here in the heavy grass of Florida we are used to jacking their jaws. So when we go salt water fishing with live bait we use Chooks (for catch and release reasons and when shiner fishing for bass we don't want belly hooked fish) it takes thought to not set the hook and just raise the rod tip and reel slack.

      @EDCandLace@EDCandLace4 жыл бұрын
    • I fish almost exclusively for flatheads with live bait circle hooks and have always set the hook. Seems to work fine for me. I certainly have better than a 15% hook up rate. I've tried the reel down method with very limited success. I think the that reason has to do with the way I fish. Who knows maybe I'll try it next time out and see how it goes.

Second, fish don’t have nerves in their spines. They’re basically like fingernails. And if you’re using a fish as bait and shoving a giant hook through it, are you really worried about being cruel?
