Brands With Best-Selling Video Game Consoles 1972 - 2019
This compares the major players in the gaming console wars from the beginning. It all began with the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972.

- You left out all of Sega Mark III systems including Sega's first ever, the SG-1000. - The Sega Saturn launched at $399.99, MOST definitely not $139. $399.99 was THE reason why Sony was even given a chance at a start because as revealed, re confirmed actually as guys like me back in the day knew, earlier this year by the History Channel documentary Game Changers, Sony was originally going to sell the PlayStation at $499.99. "$299" is still viewed as one biggest Breaking All Time. Sega leaving the hardware business still is the Top. - PlayStation 2 was $299.99, not $199.99. It wasn't $199 until May 2002. - Xbox 360 launched with two SKUs, first in business to do so. $299 Core System (no HDD, wired controller, no HDMI cable, ho headset) and $399. - PlayStation 4 Pro did NOT have UHD. It will be in PlayStation 5. - Nintendo Switch uses ROM carts so Nintendo 64 was not the last to use them. If you counted everything, handhelds as Sony WAS in the handheld space, overall Nintendo is the best selling platform holder All Time at 768.79 Million vs. 550 Million at very best from Sony.

@@reichtanglevictor1694 Xbox?
@@rainingly Xbox came out very late, 2001 compared to Sega's start
@@reichtanglevictor1694 And Sega officially stopped making consoles in 2001. It took the Xbox almost 10 years in a very hot console market to overtake a company who put up most of their sales in the 80s and 90s, a time when console ownership was significantly less common than it is today (as evidenced by how much more quickly the sales figures grow in the post-2000 portion of this video). That's not a slight against the Xbox or the 360, though, it's just a result of Microsoft's inability to break into Asian markets in their early days on the console market. If you're not viewed as a competitor to the likes of Sony & Nintendo in the large Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, etc. gaming markets, then of course you're going to struggle to catch up to those two

With the exception of the PS2, we got an xbox for that gen, we were and still are a Sony house, but my cousins had the 64/GameCube/and Dreamcast, I don’t remember much about the Dreamcast, except that the controller felt absolutely perfect in my hands, the weight, the hand position, everything about it felt more natural then all the other controllers, and always wished you could get controllers for modern consoles, but in the fit and form of retro controllers, with the couple extra buttons we have today. How cool would it be to have a fully functional wireless PS5 controller, but it looks and feels like a Dreamcast or N64 controller? I’m surprised there isn’t a market for that already, with all the weird avenues console accessories have gone down over the years.

@@JosephDalrymple they were also the reason people stopped playing video games entirely Look up the video game crash of 83
@@JosephDalrymple That happens a lot in business. Blockbuster suffered the same fate when they couldn't see the writing on the wall regarding streaming taking over the home video market. AT&T also was on the verge of collapse at one point when digital cell service appeared and they waited too long to get on the train; they eventually recovered largely due to iPhone exclusivity when it first came out. Like many leading companies Atari got complacent and rather than spend to innovate they tried to cling to the status quo and they paid for it. Only reason they stuck around as long as they did was because of the Lynx and Jaguar and their effort to take over the handheld market but the affordability and versatility of the Game Boy killed their hopes there as well.
The Atari 2600 was ubiquitous. It's the system that started the video game craze and so many people had them. Atari's downfall was that they designed and started producing the 7800, but then left it sitting on warehouse shelves until the NES came out and took over. Plus Nintendo actually offered to pay Atari to put their brand on the NES but they refused, a mistake they would regret. Regardless, Atari was a totally different company by then compared to the one Alan Bushnell created in the 70s, and now it's nothing but a brand.

The PS4 Slim has been an amazing console for me since 2017. I love it's trimmed down size, yet it is able to run exactly the same as the original PS4. Sure, it can't run 4K graphics, but it can still play all of the games that I enjoy. Bigger specs doesn't always mean better console. This also reminds me of the Nintendo Switch, which I also have. Sure, it may not have the leading specs in the world, but it delivers a memorable experience just as any top of the line console will. My first console ever was actually the Wii, though, and I still have it today! My little mind was blown when I could play Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, Lego Star Wars, you name it! Sega Genesis Mega Drive will always be in my heart. Thank you Sega for make me happy in the 90's. ❤️

Damn these consoles with less processing power than my wristwatch cost more at the time they were sold than I’d pay for a gaming platform today
Sony: *passes SEGA* Nintendo: *chuckles* Im in danger
Nintendo beats Sony by a wide margin if we include handheld consoles tho (including Gameboy (all kinds), DS and 3DS, Nintendo's total amount of console sold is ~670 millions)
PlayStation bought saga
You all have to agree on the fact that nintendo was never dominating the market in europe like in japan or the us. Europeans were using the Amiga to play games up until the playstation era (the reason was price).
@@shrimpfry880 that's not true at all, there was a ton of french people that were playing on NES and N64 for example, one of the most known french youtuber is actually about old games he played on those consoles, which is quite representative

@Noah Camps they missed all of Nintendo's portable consoles 😎
My siblings and I sold all our toys in the late 80s to pool our money and purchase a Nintendo console. Super Mario Bros Duck Hunt... Mike Tyson's punch out. That was the life!
Awesome, How to create video like this?
Everyone: Nintendo and Sony rules videogames Me: Japan rules videogames.
Meu nome não é linguiça, é GIRAFALES! Sega doesn’t even make consoles any more
Japan rules consoles, most of the games from Japan today look like they were built for the ps2.
@@berbandis surely Tekken 7, death stranding and dmc 5 look awful, right?
@Chika Yami Sony has region branches. When talking about Sony Interactive Entertainment specifically the regions are SIEA, SIEE, SIEJ and SIE Asia.
@@Yomellamocuchi1997 You did notice I said most right? Think any of the Sword Art on Line games or tales of Berseria or Persona 5 or... well I could go all day. I love Gran Turismo Sport, Final Fantasy XV, and Shadow Of the Colossus ps4 edition, but those seem to be more of an outlier then the rule. Do you disagree?
Nintendo will forever regret making the beta version of the Playstation......
What d y mean?
Flamware The "Nintendo Playstation" aka Super Disc was originally a joint venture between Nintendo and Sony. It was supposed to be an add-on to the SNES but unfortunately Nintendo and Sony could not agree to terms involving licensing as Sony would have benefited heavily from software licensing and would be the sole benefactor from music and movie licensing since they would retain control over the Super Disc itself, something Nintendo was uncomfortable with as you could imagine. The prototype system was already being produced, along with software to support it before the deal finally collapsed. Going forward, Sony would focus on developing a competitor system for the next generation of consoles known as the Playstation (heavily inspired by the Super Disc). So at the end of the day, Nintendo essentially helped create the prototype of their biggest competitor.
PlayStation is the king of games !!
@@MarcosKratos33 yeah thanks to nintendo helping them
I'm pretty sure Nintendo doesn't regret much. They printing money like mad.
Can i ask which music you used in this video? :) it's very nice
It'd be nice to see the same chart progression, but with sales older than 5 or 6 years dropping off. This would show how the current sales look.
Fun Fact: Nintendo has been making games for over 130 years. They started out making card games.

And why didn't he say about nintendo ds???
@@splashbasketball4204 the DS wasn't a home console.
@@splashbasketball4204 if you add the handhelds then Nintendo would be no 1. Honestly I dont understand why people always try to separate consoles from handhelds. Games are similar or even the same and most people play handhelds at home anyway.
@@gerudoqueenriju then you would also have to add PC gaming and then how do you define gaming pc from non gaming? Also it wouldn't be a contest cause 90% of PCs run on Microsoft software. They would blow Nintendo and Sony combined out of the race
The Switch uses SD cards and games can be downloaded. Better than using CDs!
When the Sega bar stopped moving... my heart sank all over again :(

I'm glad Nintendo is still here fighting in the console business after more than 30 years and after the failure of Wiiu i'm happy they've found success again with the Switch. What a great time to be alive for Nintendo fans.

@@johnmerisd.copiling2468 Between 54-61 years old is my guess. Console games out 49 years ago. Age 5 is when you have some of your earlier memories and develop intrest like this so he has to be atleast 54. So if the youngest he can be in 1972 is 5 then the oldest he could be in the 70's is 12(1979). 49+5 is 54 and 49+12 is 61. So between 54 and 61 years old so let's just split it right in the middle and say he's 58 years old. Ik it's creeping going through all this trouble to find a random strangers age lol.
