    • Hi! Coming from a college volleyball player and a 18u club coach, I would say don't go off of skills by age. Find players you aspire to be and then set goals to constantly better yourself. Once you complete a goal, make it more challenging. We all develop at different ages in life so just do what you are able to do and push your own limits, don't compare yourself to those around you! As far as overhand serving, I would definitely work on developing that because it is much more aggressive. Lastly, become well rounded and improve in all areas so you can be used wherever a coach needs you! Hope this helps.

      @caroline_shaheen@caroline_shaheen3 жыл бұрын
    • @@caroline_shaheen Try to read the hitter early: see where their shoulders are facing, the angle that they take to the ball, and what way their hitting hand is facing. This will give you a good idea of where the ball will be going. The earlier you read, the earlier you can start to move. In addition make sure you keep your feet moving while in defense so you are ready to move quickly. Lastly, read your blockers. If there is a large gap between them, you want to fill that hole first and worry about the line second. Seeing what the blockers leave open will give you a good idea as to where the ball will end up. Don’t be too hard on yourself, if the block is doing their job correctly, it should make reading for you a lot easier and take away a good portion of the court!

  • I’m in 9th grade and I’m trying out for my highschool team tomorrow and I have no experience but I’ve been practicing and watching these videos I’ll update how I did!!!! I’m so nervous 😭 UPDATE: Day 1/5 done it went really well today! I would say like 15 other new people joined too (we split into a group with new people and returning players) so it wasn’t as intimidating Beforehand I’ve been practicing on my own and worked on controlling the ball and it REALLY payed off I’ll write everything that happened because I know people (like me) would want to know what happened and to know what to expect Day 2/5 done: we focused on hitting today which is one of my weaker areas so I’m not sure how I’m feeling about it 😬 Sorry skipped a few days I was exhausted I’m in the car going to my last tryouts day and I’m finding out if I made it or not :) UPDATE 3/5/21 I MADE IT ON!!!! I’m so proud of myself the coach told me that I really seemed to enjoy playing and put in a lot of effort I think half of the freshman were cut and a few upperclassmen. I know I wasn’t perfect at everything for example hitting and serving was pretty rough receives were good so as long as you put in the effort, go for the ball, communicate, you’ll have a good shot! INCOMING ESSAY: First I arrived and tryouts were for jv and varsity so people up to senior year were there and at the beginning I thought that was so scary (but not at all you’ll see!) I already knew a girl (she’s new too) there so we walked to the gym together and all the girls were on the benches with their bags and getting settled so we both sit down and then I think it was the older girls but they started setting up the nets and then later on everyone was standing up and grouped together and in my case all the freshman were talking together and then the coach yelled for us to do 3 laps around the gym and so we did (leader started cutting corners lolll) it wasn’t excruciatingly tiring I wouldn’t say I’m extremely out of shape and after that I think we got water and then we had to spread out and do stretches (water break again) and we huddled in a group and the coach explained the teams and how they’re trying to get 14 max on each (jv and varsity) and then she said to partner up with someone you didn’t know and for the experienced players to partner up with the new players (very scary at first) and a really really really really nice girl came up to me and said “do you need a partner?” I swear she was the nicest girl I’ve ever met and first (sorry I have to go to sleep it’s 12:35 am and I have to get up early 😭 I’ll continue later I could honestly make my own video about this I’m thinking about it) FINAL UPDATE 3/28: I’ve been playing on the team for a few weeks now (it’s been going well :)) but I wanted to come back and add a few things ADVICE: -I think going for the ball was a REALLY important thing because looking back now I think a lot of the girls who were cut were the ones who usually just stood there -don’t worry about serving, my team still has a few girls who can’t serve over the net (I couldn’t either but I learned a technique: hit the ball towards the bottom of your hand I know the coaches will tell you to hit with your whole palm and when I tried that I kept slapping the ball and after I started hitting towards the bottom I started getting it over the net! But I don’t want to mess anyone up so do whatever’s best for you 😅 -get the ball pretty high up (tbh I didn’t learn this until after tryouts) but when you receive and set make sure it’s a little high so others can get it -have fun! Don’t be that one person that doesn’t look like they want to be there because 1) you wanna have fun in the first place 2) it come off as good and a team player -also if this makes anyone less nervous I had tryouts for a week and I ended up getting excited to go everyday after the beginning! It was nice to play with new people but I also don’t know what other people’s situations are like so this was my personal experience -JUST TO CLARIFY: my state isn’t big on volleyball so I was very lucky since most public middle schools didn’t offer it but my high school is also very competitive when it comes to sports -Also the advice I’m writing now is after tryouts and Ive been on the team so it might come off as really intimidating like “uh oh I have to be super good” but no, literally none of us were perfect!! and I want to make that really clear! But those were areas that I think were really important now that I look back so I hope this helps!!

  • I’m so glad you mentioned hustling after water breaks! Although I haven’t actually been involved in volleyball, I can definitely say that’s important. I did cheerleading for about 3 years and when it was water break, my teammates would go on their phones, socialize, walk away from the team and all that. Then when it came time to practice more, the others would walk back to the team without even getting water (because they were too busy on their phones and whatnot) that made our team fall behind and affected our competition score dramatically. This is also why I’m gonna do volleyball instead of cheerleading this year.

    • Hi! I am a college setter, and 18u club coach. I played middle my freshman year of high school, then switched to setter so kind of relate! Talk to your coach. It is very rare to find players who can go from middle to setting. Make yourself well rounded, it will make it easier to get bids for teams ect. At the end of the day, being open and honest with your coach about where you want to play will get you far. Setters need to be the most positive on the court and the leader, they make all the calls. If you are a good leader, your coach will be much more likely to play you in that position.

    • I might suggest being a hitter! I know it isn’t one of the positions you mentioned, but your height will help you a lot in the position. When I was 12, I was 5’9”, and being a hitter really helped with the fundamentals of volleyball for me. If you don’t want to be a hitter, that’s totally fine!! :) have fun 💕

  • My high schools volleyball try outs are on MONDAY! (it’s literally Saturday 11:00 pm for me right now) and I have just practice some basic volleyball this evening but I have the whole day tmr to practice some more. (this is my first time EVER trying out for ANY sport at my school) I don’t know if I will make it but I will definitely try my best! Are there any extra tips anyone can give me tho bc now I’m kind starting to feel a lil nervous(more like a LOT lol, but also excited as well). here are some doubts I still have (considering I’m digital learning this year, not face to face) 1 ~ is there a specific type of clothing I should wear for tryouts? (I kinda don’t want to be totally wearing something completely different then everyone else). Especially since I will have to show up at school in front of the car rider area which is filled with soo many ppl and I would be the only one going in school instead of out and without school uniform(idk I just think it’s wierd?) 2 ~ is it ok if I show up at tryouts (with my physical packet and ecg completed) having already missed the week before (which was practice) after school?I’m not sure if SINCE I missed practice that would mean I couldn’t tryout. 3~ is it just me or does it always happen that when me and this other person (when playing volleyball with net at school with 2 teams) that is nearby me and we both see the ball heading our way so we both say “mine” so then we both either bump into each other or back away at the same time, and then I get a bunch of people mad at me but not them? I was really confused. Nobody has to answer these specific questions tho I just wanted to know since my tryouts are literally like 1 day away!

    @dontsleeponseungminuseyourbed@dontsleeponseungminuseyourbed3 жыл бұрын
    • Hey girl I have tryouts Monday as well so I will try and answer as best as I can 1. Wear something that will make you stand out. A bright shirt, a bright headband/scrub hue just something that is eye catching. This will bring more attention to you and will make you be seen 2.yes, that is perfectly fine. You must have those things or you won’t be able to tryout so bringing them makes you look very responsible 3. This happens a lot actually. However when this happens always go for every, single ball. If you call it take it. No matter if the other person is calling it as well. Chances are they won’t take it if they hear you calling it and if they do take it your there to give support/backup. You never want to call a ball and not go for it. If both do you call it, and you think you can get to it, call it again louder this time to reassure them that you are getting it and if you don’t get it apologize and make it known you will have there back next time. This shows teamwork.
