If you 100% want to know that you are talking to the official person, look at the account's User ID. To do this, open up your settings, go to advanced, and enable developer mode. Then you can right click on a profile and click "copy User ID" and compare it between whoever DMed you and who the official person is. This is important because people can use strange Unicode characters to make a profile look exactly like someone else's.

The people these scams work on are often naive or vulnerable. My mom called me the other day because someone had emailed her saying something about how my late brother had a bitcoin wallet. They were trying to pass it on to next of kin but they needed some information for who to send it to. Which... sickens me. I'm glad she called me to ask if it was a scam or not, but I can't help but think about all the other people who don't have someone in their life to help them recognize these things.
I actually almost started a scamming business before because it's just so easy and so simple, glad I didn't, I'm studying at a uni now instead. Can't say I'm happy with what I'm doing but I'm probably happier than I would've been if I went through with it and scammed people out of their money. Beware people, if you think someone's trying to scam you, just ignore or block them. You can try wasting their time but be careful that you don't download anything they send you, even a simple file that looks like a pdf could infect your device with malware.
People fall for these for a variety of reasons. Trust (hence impersonation of someone they think is important), desperation, lack of knowledge.

i think discord needs to have a verification system, u get a nice checkmark to your name and knows ur official. WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT
A better way to check for the identity of the person is by comparing the user ID. They could still possibly fake their name and tag to look similar to the person they're copying.

I have been scamed by something like this for a lot of money and believe me when i say i felt so bad for believing it and that i sent so much money that i was a few minutes from self deleting. Now i have not told anyone but after the panic attacks and all that. The stress has been lighter every year since. It was in 2019 and i will try to make that money back by working hard and forgeting about it.
Everyone has been scammed or cheated in one way or another. I have not lost money but did lose my steam acc once like this and also i have been scammed of cash (not too much) in real life. Don’t lose hope and keep living you will be happy after ten years and laugh at how silly you were

Scambaiter actually caught and destroyed a scammer with the same website template, there are over 700 you can find by just searching up a quote from the site, and vastly more that werent dumb enough to leave everything on default.

Sometimes I feel like Discord needs to have some protection on accounts. If you are a big creator like NTTS with 100k+ subscribers on KZhead. The username "No Text To Speech" alongside a profile picture that looks close to what he has, should be protected. This goes with visually similar characters like Cyrillic о and Greek ο as well, and very spellings like "Not Text To Speech". They would simply save the original values, and when you set a new name and avatar, they just check if it's too close. To clarify, it's just the combination of name and avatar that would be protected. You can have an account called No Text To Speech, or that same avatar, you just can't have both at the same time.
