Got a friend request from a Discord user with the name "check my bio"? Well clicking on the bio is like opening Pandora's box.
The grey market side of Discord has gone rampant in this new advertising technique. Malicious actors no longer will send a DM and let it hit your message requests. Rather they will send you a Discord friend request telling you to check their bio. And it's the wild west out there, scams, ads, fake giveaways, crypto double money scams, and community server advertisements.
There's some good and there is some bad. The bad thing is that it looks like Discord might not be doing anything. The good? You can easily prevent yourself from being targeted by scams or being advertised to by people trying to sell garbage.

Literally, worst part is removing the 4 number tag system will likely make scammers worse than they are now (which is horrendous to say the least) so it's a pretty big "yikes" if you ask me. If they really wanted to push this god awful change they could've at least focused on cutting scammers down prior to implementation but no.. why would they do that?
real cause it is wayyy more likely that we'd run out of usernames faster than tags. they shouldve just added another number to it (e.g #XXXXX) this way instead of only being 9,999 of a certain name there can be 99,999 ik i took this from the creators past video but thats my opinion

Exactly. That's what I use it for. Also for some reason I've only ever been contacted by two scam bots in my entire time on discord. lucky me.

That's quite limiting if you manage a community if you ask me. As an admin of two Minecraft servers (which have their own Discord server), and an owner of two additional Discord servers I opened for my social media community, I cannot say that this advice would work for me. But it will absolutely work for most people.

Discord not banning accounts for having scams and stuff in their bio almost sounds like a joke to me, my god. All that tells me is you can put the most vile, ToS breaking, possibly illegal stuff in your Discord bio and they literally will not give a shit or do anything about it. There is no way they won't get into legal trouble for this at some point, what a huge mistake.
If Discord doesn't care about us, why should we care about them? Absolutely ridiculous how they turned, especially because it was actually good as an application before. Sad this happened to them.
The 9 year old staying on discord is so goofy, I was randomly banned just a few days ago for being underaged, I'm 19, my bio says 19, I never joked about my age or bought up anything about age outside of my bio, which once again, said 19 Why are support so garbage

I’ve gotten two spam friend requests already from accounts trying to get people to buy NFTs within their About Me, it’s really sad and annoying seeing these and having Discord doing nothing about it.
As a server owner I'd love it if bans reverted friend requests. Because they come and the damage is already done. Also I'd love to forbid users from doing friend requests/DMing people in a server. That way I don't have to kick the bot but just laugh at it until it leaves the server.
Although the first option seems kinda harsh, I agree more with the second one.
@@conclusivestate Of course, it'd be a bit problematic, but by reverting it, I mean making it so any requests done are cancelled automatically so they don't get seen if a ban is done quick enough, specially from accounts like these. Not removing your already friended users.
Thanks for making this video, I had somebody with "Check My Bio" in funny letters as their name add me as friend just a couple days ago and I was curious what it was about but there was no way I was actually going to follow the instructions so I ignored the friend request and moved on. This makes a lot of sense. It's just a repeat of the same old scams but with a new way to try to avoid getting banned.

I recently joined a server full of CP. Had no idea any of that was on the server, completely disturbing as people were trading it, absolutely disgusting. I reported the server multiple times to discord, emailed them constantly, no one ever responded or seemed to give any shits. A company like this should really step up their report system, I am disgusted by discords efforts to take action on this. This company is turning into roblox management way to fast and they need to get their shit together.

There are ways to prevent DMs from Random "People", you can first as you said in the Video disable all Friend Requests (or less if you have trust in "humanity") from your Settings and in Privacy and Safety (in your Settings, again) under Server Privacy Defaults you can chose to allow or not DMs From Server Members and so far, besides my friends who got hacked (won't help in this specific situation 🙃) I haven't gotten any suspicious links or whatever (this Setting isn't retroactive, which means you will have to go in each Server's Privacy Settings to disable Random DMs manually, in the Servers you were in before activating the Setting, to acces em you Right Click on PC or Hold your Finger on the Server's icon on Phone)

I wonder if what I experienced is similar to this. In one server I'm in, I would always get messages and message requests from random people, and the one consistent thing was their bio had something to do with art, sometimes saying "commissions open." When I first received a message, I talked to someone who claimed their cat was sick and they needed commission money to help it. Now, the art examples they provided were a little sus. They seemed to be all different styles, and I was trying to reverse image search them but found minimal results besides one Twitter account for one of the works. I confronted them about it, and they didn't really settle my suspicion. I want to support artists as I am one too, but I was mainly confused, so I used the fact I don't have Paypal to get out of the conversation. Later, once I turned off messages for that server, I just got a bunch of friend requests from similar accounts. Some were older, and some were new. I don't know if they were all coming to my dms for comms or if they were scams or what. Either way, I don't like advertising in my dms, so I just turned off friend requests bc of the spam. :/

Finally someone talked about this I had this 1 dm on discord they said “someone doxxed you go to this server to see (shows link)” infact I didn’t click it because as a security concerned person I don’t click links usually I don’t click them from random people and that I’m thanking you for doing this video and this type of scams should def get banned

8:30 there's a way to configure permissions such that people who newly joined can only see channels with nobody in the user list, and people who have been verified can't see those channels so they don't show up in the user list. Would this guard against this or can you still enumerate server members regardless of which channels you can see?
This wouldn't work. The Discord API always sends full member list to the client, hiding members is handled by Discord app.
I don't think saying you're underage on the bio is violating the TOS, because someone who is 13+ could write that they are 9 on it. You'd have to report them that the bio was used with malicious intent, at least scamming, or other intents that they want to cause problems to others. The bios that basically promote the Crypto scam or other stuff like free Robux, or stuff that's basically violating the TOS is the only way if I'm correct.

bro 1 time i literally almost got baited, some random dude named "check my bio" friend requested me, and ofc i checked at it says ive been doxxed and told to join a random discord server, i held my fingers and slowly realizing it might be a scam and now apparently everyone gets these!!!

disabled friend requests and all DMs from randoms and i haven't been bothered since, you can literally just turn them back on temporarily if you want to add a new person that you're actually talking to
I reported an entire server. Gave discord a spreadsheet of all user ids in the server (everyone on the server was a bot), and discord replied back saying that "yea we took care of it" when the server is still up and running. Not only is the server still up and running every single member still is in the server. No bans or punishments have been issued to either the server owners or discord ids I sent them. Discord just does not care at this point it seems. I have been a supporter of discord since 2017 and I won't be giving discord another dime once my subscription expires.
This is why I check mutual servers before accepting request

one solution i see is to filter "check my bio" and if the account sends some random number between 5-15 friend request it stops showing it to recipients and make it look like they were sent on the " check my bio" account so it is harder for the atacker to come to conclusion it blocked

Yeah I tried to report someone with hate speech in their bio who literally said "report me and if I'm banned I'm banned" after 5 back and forths it went nowhere. :/
That is something I hate about Discords report system. You need the message id. But what happens if they use a bot to send that message. The message gets deleted (so you can't report it) and re sent by the bot. So you report the bot message. And nothing happens cause bot logs are considered third party and so can't be used as evidence.
No Text To Speech, I hope you read this: Even after sending discords support a message link, they literally tell people to take it up with the discords moderator, even if the message was to literally k!II myself. Discord is garbage and it's clear they're being overrun by this work.

Somewhat related kinda not? Literally just saw Discord's blog about getting rid of "discriminators" which are the 4 numbers next to your username, in place of drumroooolll please Usernames. I can only see this going wonderfully and I can't wait for my friends to be scammed by me (not me) because not me's "username" looks almost identical to mine on a glance because sometimes it's hard to see differences between "1" and the letter "I" and is no longer a completely different number code allowing the ability to differentiate us. The reason for this change? "It's way too hard to add your friends because username searching is case sensitive and you also have to use your brain and remember 4 numbers to add them" Uh yeah, I thought that was the point? Even then at the very least the easiest solution would be to make the current search system just.. not case sensitive?.. Thanks for creating a solution to a problem I've never heard anyone have, discord, can't wait for the next one that will make it even easier for scammers.. yeesh
