I Adopted a Russian Blue Cat in a TINY Apartment | Do I Recommend It?

Many people have heard about or seen the Russian Blue cat - hopefully, this will help cover the information that is lacking that prospective adopters are looking for: from their behavior indoors, interactions with humans, energy levels, and some special considerations when choosing the Russian Blue Cat as a pet.
As a brief summary, Russian Blue cats are generally predictable, there usually isn't something you would be surprised about them other than their dashing good looks. You might think this would be a negative point but in an apartment, where there is high traffic and have many objects around in close proximity, it's a major strength.

  • My Russian blue is literally the best cat I've ever owned! He follows me everywhere, always willing to cuddle! He's been very accepting both times I had babies and brought them home. My kids are 6 and 2 now and grew up with my Russian, and he's just amazing with them. He cuddles with both kids and my husband, but if I'm sitting or laying down, then he's cuddling with me. If I walk by him and ignore him, he'll stick his paw out and grab me. Lmao. I'm going to be an absolute mess when it's his time to go.

    • My Russian Blue bonded to me and would run and hide if anyone came over or tried to interact with her-she would follow me everywhere and would be verbally upset if she couldn't see me around the house--when I took a bath she would sit on the bathroom sink and watch me out of fear I might drown and would meow hysterically if I put my head under the water and made "bubbling" sounds

    • @@bufnyfan1 my Russian will also go hide if someone he's not familiar with is over. He eventually comes from upstairs to assess the situation though after a little while. He also has a thing for closed doors and cupboards. He's always opening the kitchen cabinets he can reach, and our closet doors! It's so funny to me.

    • Glad to hear your baby took to your babies so well. I'm hesitant to get a Russian Blue precisely because I want kids but want the cat first. I have heard Russian Blues are not good with babies/young kids.

    • @@katehu7194 While RBs do possess an "only child" characteristic, that's a general consensus, mainly in terms of introducing a new member once the cat is matured (roughly 1-2 yrs) due to an established territory. RBs don't like change but kittens are much easier to adapt to change. I would say your best bet is to have your baby first. That way you're not overwhelmed with responsibility AND your baby is part of the territory that will be established. Then you don't have to worry whether or not your cat accepts the new member. I rescued two kittens 10 months ago, one RB and one Bombay... they're best furfriends. They also love my children. Whatever you do, remember a fulfilled cat, is an angel. A bored cat, is a devil. (Edit: I forgot to mention, in terms of more than one child... have one baby first, then get your kitten. That way your kitten will have experience with a young child, and acclimate better to another one. Cat's senses are magnified and highly sensitive to smells. Your hormonal changes will be detected, and if you create a strong bond with your RB, it's likely they will be drawn to your pregnancy. All breeds have varying characteristics but honestly, as long as you don't neglect your cat for baby, your RB will lovingly accept your new addition. Best of luck!)

  • On December 21, I went into my local shelter to get the oldest cat who had been there the longest. This turned out to be a feral 7 year old purebred Russian Blue (I have called him Sully). I know little about the breed and this video is very informative and helpful. Thank you. I was wondering about getting Sully a cat wheel like you have in your apartment but I'm afraid it would drive my downstairs neighbour insane. How loud are they when in use? Is it possible to lock/disable them at night? Does your cat like it? So far, this "feral" cat has smothered me in affection. He is *constantly* beside me, purring and grooming me. He is a beautiful cat - I don't think I've ever seen a purebred Russian Blue in real life before. He is SUPER loving and clingy and his fur is like velvet. In a lifetime of loyal, loving and cherished cats I have had, I think Sully is by far the most affectionate (and I have had super clingy cats who insisted on riding on my shoulders rather than be away from me). Unfortunately, the shelter didn't check him for worms before releasing him, and I saw one as soon as I got him home. (I have already spoken to the vet, given him a profender treatment. The vet is making a housecall on Friday. There is not a chance that I will stress him out by putting him in a carrier and taking him anywhere, especially not to the vet. It would scare him and this old guy has earned a lifetime of peace and quiet.) What a great cat.

  • We have been working on some new renovations to the house and the floors are covered with tools boxes, upgrade light fixtures, faucets, shower heads and cabinetry. We got her as a kitten so all her new experiences are our new experiences. One day after dragging in cans of paint and plastic floor covers. I guess "Silver", is her name, was having difficulty finding her toys. It being a rather windy day., Silver experienced her first rolling leaf. It scared her at first then it became a challenge to pounce and conquer. It was so cute. The wind would blow and she would run in the house. Slowly sticking her head out the kitty door, one paw, 2 paws, half her body, then pounce on a leaf, kicking it with her feet, jump back up and run back into the house again. Well when I was painting the dining area she's bouncing in with a leaf in her mouth throwing it up in the air catching it like one of her mousies. I felt so guilty because it just dawned on me. All her cat toys were under the plastic paint covers. From there on out. Leaves are her new pleasure even though I have bought her AI toys. No, the leaves from the tree are her toy of choice. Go figure , I spend $100 on AI toys and a free leaf is her entertainment choice. 🤔

  • Very good video... As a person that is owned by a Russian Blue cat for the past eleven years, I can say if you train your cat (Russian Blues are highly trainable) to have their claws clipped, they will present themselves to you if they want their claws looked after. My Sapphire sees the nail clippers and comes running to me, plonks herself on my lap and gives me her paw to cut them. If you don't want to have your cat claw your furniture, you can use a spray bottle when they are little. As my Sapphire grew up I would have to ask her want this? and show her the bottle, not spray it and she would stop any bad behaviour. She is the most amazing cat personality and is definitely the boss in our house, often found burrowed down in the bed with us.

    • I had a Russian Blue ("Natasha") who got used to us gently rolling her up in a blanket with her paws and head exposed so we could safely clip her nails---made it much easier to avoid hitting the "quick" part of the nails--at first she would be a bit resistant but ultimately she came to understand what we were trying to do and didn't mind it

  • I too have a Russian Blue and he is a Great kitty. Mine is EXTREMELY clingy as well. He yowls and cries at the door when we leave, and will try and break thru the door to follow us. We have had him since he was a young kitten. He loves to sleep under the blankets, play, lay on his back, get scratched, act like a 'block captain' staring out the window or from the top of the cabinets or cat tower LOL. My cat's name is Smokey and he def has the darker grey 'rings,' (almost black,) around his tail only. I can for sure agree about the attention. Smokey will take all the attention you give him, no matter what. He HATES not being able to follow us around if we shut him out of the bathroom when my wife or I is in there. Overall, out of the 6 cats I've raised and owned, this Russian Blue is one of the best. He has a great temperament and he plays with my neighbors chihuahua. He's a really well behaved cat and has a great personality. He's still young, and just turned 2. Thanks for sharing your video. You have some beautiful animals in those kitties. 👍👍😎

  • I've had many cats, the Russian Blue came to me by accident, his mom had babies under a delivery truck, got spooked and Nino got left behind, a newborn, they called the Animal Shelter and they could not do anything, so they left it to freeze at the whse. The next day @ work my colleague found him and knowing I had cats, forced him on me, I was skeptical and did not want a baby cat to die on me, but I felt so sorry for him, I took him home by bus, he was so good, the first few nights he slept on my tummy, my helper with colonies was able to get hold of kitten milk, and then miracoulsy one of my own, Teena, who had lost her baby 6 months before, took it upon herself to grab him by scruff of the neck, brought him to a box and started to nurse him, of course she could do everything but give milk to him, me and my husband took care of it, now, he's WOW 4 years, did not know he was a russian blue until about a year ago, he's the perfect specimen of a cat one can have, he's bossy, concerned, loving, playful, alerts me when other animals come around the house, wakes me up, loves me, caresses me when I cry, and all this while smiling, for he has a smile that never leaves, thank God I did not meet him before my husband, oh I'd just give up men and keep my soft blue gray angel that was sent to me by Saint Michael, for this cat's history makes them the Archangelic cats see small description from wikipedia below: Origin "The Russian Blue is a naturally occurring breed that may have originated in the port of Arkhangelsk in Russia.[1] They are also sometimes called Archangel Blues.[2] It is believed that sailors took Russian Blues from the Archangel Isles to Great Britain and Northern Europe in the 1860s.[1] The first recorded appearance outside of Russia was in 1875 at The Crystal Palace in England as the Archangel Cat. The Russian Blue competed in a class including all other blue cats until 1912, when it was given its own class. The breed was developed mainly in England and Scandinavia until after World War II."

  • Great video. I have a 7 year old female and a 15 year old male (Jessie and Jazz, respectively). They both like a set schedule and were easy to train. Jessie is food motived so I used treats to teach her tricks (come, sit, sit up, lay down, stay, turn around, jump over a stick, and high five; of course, she only does these when she knows I have treats!). Neither over eat, so weight is not a problem (both are about 8 pounds). I got them from different breeders and learned that the breeder is very important. Jessie came from a breeder that spends a lot of time socializing her kittens, so Jessie is much more cuddly and adaptable than Jazz; she does not hide when we have company. But, Jazz does pretty well also. We take them with us on trips, via plane and car, when the destination and distance allows. Jazz loves to be petted but only later in life he’s learned that he gets back messages when he’s on my lap. Also, Jazz came from a breeder who did not manage her lines well. Jazz has some hip problems and another Russian Blue we got from the same breeder before Jazz, had a serious medical problem and also died of cancer at 8 years old (no worries, that breeder is no longer in business). Just be sure to research the breeder and asks lots of questions about the integrity of the line and how the kittens are socialized. I will always have Russian Blues. They are chill, loving, and beautiful cats!!

Now she is under the study table. Is it normal that she gets freak out by the sound of footsteps or door closing? Mine would rub her head on me too but once I stand up or move, she'd freak out.,

  • ''Russian blue is vocal when it comes to food'' Yes, I was getting worried when you mentioned they can have health problems because of it. My Russian Blue weighs 8 kg (6 years old); we live in a house, he spends time outside whenever he wants, and is quite active. However, his food demands are really big. He only likes one type of wet canned food (the most expensive one, of course), and if he doesn't get it, even if his bowl is filled with another type, he doesn't give up asking. We also tried to trick him by giving him a bit smaller portions instead of what we usually do, but it seems he can tell the difference. He is super persistent about asking for food, he doesn't calm down until he gets his portion... And if we small down the portions of food, he is nervous, laying in the middle of the kitchen floor (and taking most part of the kitchen floor) like telling us ''give me food or keep bypassing me until the end of your days.'' If we are brave enough to ignore him and bypass him, he is ''attacking'' our legs (lol). Do you have any suggestions on what to do regarding his diet, how to approach this kind of cat personality regarding it? Unless that, he is never aggressive, a loving cat purring super loud, great and patient with a small kid, verry attached to two members of the family, sleeping in family bed... super spoiled?

  • I have a Russian Blue that I got at the SPCA. He was part of a feral litter. I didn't ever really think that he would be that much percentage of true Russian Blue, but the more I've learned, the higher I think his percentage is. He has all the physical traits and so many of the traits you and others have mentioned. I've had cats for over 40 years and I was NOT prepared for a cat like this. I just went to the SPCA and got the cat who wanted to come home with me. I had no idea he would be such a lunatic.... and he's a lunatic because he's so darned smart. I'm not sure I would recommend this breed to a new cat owner unless they were planning to fully immerse themselves in the cat lady life. I had 2 older cats when I got him, one who was very sick and the other was 10. He latched on to my 10 year old in the first 10 seconds of coming home - it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. And he also helped take care of my sick kitty. After she was gone, he would get too bored though and he expected attention ALL the time. I may be home all day, but I work from home. My older cat couldn't keep up with him. He ended up getting his own kitten at 9 months, that remains his favorite toy :) I really just thought I got a weird and exceptionally smart cat, but I cannot believe people have been breeding these lunatics for centuries. I think they take a lot of patience and understanding of cats... so its definitely not a breed for everyone.

Also she has a passion for food and I really have to be mindfull of portion control. The biggest difference with your cat is that mine loves attention from visitors to our home. She will even sit in their lap. I think its a great breed.

  • A neighbor of mine had a RB. He was the most adorable kitty with one exception. If it was sunny and warm outside, he would lounge on my porch. If I made a motion to him to come and let me pet him, he would just lock at me as if to say, “ I’m not moving, you come to me!” This little ball of fur would only do this when the weather was warm and the sun was high. A total beach bum. Any other time he would come over and let me pet and scratch under his chin. It was a sad day when my neighbor moved. Her cat was a good pal!

  • I'm looking at getting a Russian Blue kitten as a companion in my apartment, and with my 6 year old male Persian Chinchilla (super chilled and quiet). I recently lost a fantastic smart, chilled, confident and loving cat best friend to kidney disease, and feel a RB would be a good fit. I've been to see a few hobby breeders. One of them, the parents of the kittens were None Active and half brother and sister (same father). Is that ok or a red flag? Kittens look well socialised and cared for, vacinnated and microchipped etc. Really bonded well with one male kitten. Mega friendly and happy. Those parents were calm and friendly, looked in love! Another hobby breeder - kittens are not vet checked or vaccinated - and so a lot cheaper. Been kept indoors, I can take them the vets for everything they need on colletion. They looked healthy and active. One was a little smaller and had a little bit of sleep in her eyes (looked like a small bit of the standard sleep gunk rather than infection, but I'm no expert). These parents were skitty and nervous (as I understand RBs can be around new people). Hard to gauge. I'm sure all these kittens will be lovely. I know not professional and perfect breeders. Thoughts? Maybe they are fine, I feel a bit new to this, and a bit nervous! Should I get a girl or a boy to fit in with my resident cat? I've heard it doesn't really matter.
