I love how stark the difference between vale being in group and vale being alone is. First, laughter, then hiding in a bush utterly terrified, finds friends, more laughter. Amazing.
Vale being alone takes away the last 2 parts.
Situations are typically a lot less scary when you are with other people. It might be an evolutionary thing since munki together strong. Our brains are just wired to turbo charge the fear sector of the brain when alone.

My favorite is still The Forest but that's less a horror game and more a survival game that happens to have cannibals in it
The idea of a co-op horror game that actively tries to split the players up is an interesting one. a more polished iteration on the same idea might have some real promise.
I think the dark anthology is the closest I’ve played personally. In different scenes you will sometimes be playing alongside a friend, and in others you will be somewhere else. Even though me and my friend could still talk to each other, somehow not having them there in the same scene experiencing what i was made it tenser and scarier. I’m sure not being able to talk would make it even more so, but for me it’s a happy medium. Otherwise I would be completely still and not playing lol
We Were Here is a pretty good co-op puzzle horror series. Ive only played the first but the basic premise is that you and a friend have headed into some haunted mansion in a frozen wasteland and are immediately split up. Each of you finds a radio which is your only means of communication for the rest of the game, not only with hold to talk but its a physical object you need to use, so you can't do stuff while talking and only one person can talk at a time. The two players are split up, one becomes the "Adventurer", who moves through the mansion and physically solves the puzzles, and the other the "Librarian", trapped in a small area full of clues to every puzzle in the game. Its mostly just puzzles but in general its pretty spooky and there are a few proper scares, it also may get scarier in the sequels.

And now we have Lethal Company, which gives little benefit to sticking together beyond the fact that one monster can only kill so many people. Celebrate- the more polished iteration is here! Kinda. I mean it does sometimes encourage sticking together. But mostly it tries to make you split up.

It's funny seeing this game without a shitzillion glowsticks littering the ground. When I played this with my housemates, I don't think there was a single moment where we weren't clicking the mouse to place down infinite glowsticks.

Imagine a horror game where the monster takes sound clips from players’ mics and plays them to lure the other players.
Let me set the scene: You live in Elko County Nevada, USA. You work at the local military base in a civilian job about half an hour drives away, but you hardly ever see actual soldiers instead seeing people in full black combat gear with a weird logo, kind of like a peace sign (SCP logo, but we don't know that). One day, you go to work but none of the soldiers you usually see are there. You continue as normal, but eventually hear a voice. It is coming from the vents. "Somebody help me please! It's down here with me!" You go to the vents, and try to help them but you hear them say something else. "Crap you're a civvy... ah screw it! Protocol won't help now. the code to the elevator is AREA14, and the code to the armory is- *crunch*" You stand up, and begin to leave the building but you see a red creature on 4 legs, with a giant mouth and no eyes (SCP 939). You turn around, and slowly get in the elevator.
