Six days after an Iranian attack on Israel, Israel struck back with a limited strike on an air base outside of Isfahan, a city in Iran. Are we in a full-blown crisis at this point, or are we about to hit an offramp? And just want exactly are the nuclear risks in all of this?

Yep, the Iranian F-14s , F-4 phantoms, F-5 Tiger IIs outclassed their Iraqi counterparts who were poorly trained and piloting more inferior Mig-19s, 21s, 23s , 25s , the only Iraqi plane that was comparable to the Iranian US supplied warplanes was the French F-1, which was the first Iraqi aircraft to shoot down a Iranian F-14. • Interesting! Israel "missing" the nuclear facilities is likely to have been by intention. It's striking close enough to tell Iran that they _could_ reach the two key facilities nearby if they wanted to. A form of warning without escalating the situation to the brink, where Iran is pressured to respond in a potentially catastrophic way. At the same time, Israel didn't just want to waste the opportunity, so they aimed to knock out an important military facility which, if successful, makes it harder for Iran to protect their nuclear facilities. Also, if they just hit just a patch of empty dirt nearby, they would be both laughed at for being incompetent and Iran's likely conclusion would be that the missiles/drones were intended for the most obvious targets, the nearby nuclear facilities so again, they would feel pressured to respond preemptively. Instead, Israel aimed for something valuable enough but not the nuclear facilities. Iran also knows that Israel quite certainly has more nukes then them and Israel's big brother, the US is watching... Cunning but with an element of brinkmanship!!

  • Here's a few more things to consider when reading between the lines (pan intended): - Iran fired a combination of about 300 drones and variety of missiles with little to no effect, and publicly threatened to escalate if Israel retaliates. - Israel responded with 3 drones / missiles, (about 1% of Iran's barrage) all of which reached their destination deep within Iranian space unnoticed until the final moment. (Isfahan is about 600km from the border...) - Isfahan has not only a nuclear facility, but also military air base, and drone factory. (So it's a very significant target.) - The US leaked the information that Israel did it, but Israel did not admit (Which means officially Israel didn't respond.) If it wasn't clear enough, Israel's message is something like: You can barely hit us, we can and will retaliate, and you won't even see us coming, so do that again, and you know what we hit next... (nuclear, aerial and drone manufacturing capabilities.) - It is very clear from Iran's reaction (they downplayed it but let it slide) and Al Jazeera English's report on the attack that the Iranian leaders are aware of the implications, even keep the civilians clueless. (The guy from Tehran said something like: Israel's message is that they can, and may retaliate, but this time they chose not to.)

During soviet v usa cold war, middle east also had an arab cold war. It's a region of layers uppon layers, hard to make sense or define.

    @davidg3517@davidg3517Ай бұрын
    • two thing, the first any respectable country have to respond and iran choice to do that even to the US. showing proxy and Palestine a new possibility/future. while many arabs didn't like the soft response as they already hate iran and frame it as only using palestine case to further its interest, proxy and ppl who are actually effected like Palestines knew very well that at least iran isn't in bed with israel and actually willing to attack israel. i think ppl fail to understand how moving it is for someone to be oppressed and bullied by stronger enemy that no established power willing to intervene even supposed brothers, for him to see for he first time since forever another established power that have the same weight as israel attacking israel even symbolic as a show of force. in the end the whole thing for iran is a battle of ideas, could arab leaders push israel to look friendly? can israel itself look friendly and control itself? could arab leaders ignore their population to this extent? could arab leaders provide an accepted level of resolution? could arab leaders gamble on the risk for failing to provide such accepted resolution? etc... now that US leaving israel need to form a coalition between arab countries centered around containing iran, iran is trying to flip the table on israel head. i don't think arab leaders will force a coalition with iran but it can delay of not stop such coalition from forming at least.

  • Degrading Iran’s air defenses and air forces is a prudent first step for Israel. Following strikes would then be more likely to succeed and have less risk, at least for a while. That puts Iran on notice without going all the way which can be useful for diplomatic reasons. It not only allows the USA to continue to consider actually providing some aid eventually but also is leverage on Iran to encourage them to pressure Hamas to release the hostages.

    @stupidburp@stupidburpАй бұрын
    • Hamas are proxies, you do not directly control proxies nor Iran any leverage at this point, that ended at Oct 7. None of this was about hostages or Gaza. It was about kicking the hornets nest to keep a crisis going, satisfy the extremists, and possibly shake loose that funding, not like they were hurting for ammo. The military option has gotten you a negative number of hostages. If you actually want the hostages, look for them in Qatar.

      @oohhboy-funhouse@oohhboy-funhouseАй бұрын
    • Hamas has continued to take orders from the Quds Force during the war. They are the largest supplier of weapons over the long term for them. The billionaire Hamas leadership in Qatar only wants the aid to keep flowing so they can keep diverting it into their pockets. They can’t do that very efficiently again until after the war ends. They will look for an excuse for an exit from the war for their own selfish reasons. The hostages are not in Qatar. Transporting them there without being tracked is not feasible. They are in Gaza or Egypt. The hostage situation is the #1 political crisis internally in Israel for the leadership to deal with. Israel is much less concerned about external factors. They would like aid and assistance but are not counting on it and they have already been waiting over 6 months for anything substantial. Israel wants a way out on their own terms and those terms are dictated by the public as release of the hostages. If that means glassing Iran or just intimidating them, so be it. Either way.
