Nikon 200-500mm F5.6 VR Unboxing and Sniff Test
Nikon pretty much surprised the photography world when they announced the 200-500mm F5.6 VR Lens. I don't think anyone including myself saw this mega zoom coming.

Before I jump into my impressions and sample images let's talk about what is currently on the market. Sigma makes two lenses in the 150-600 range and Tamron has one as well. The difference is each of those lenses is a variable aperture lens going to F6.3. The Nikon on the other hand is a fixed F5.6 which means at 200 it's 5.6 as well as zoomed all the way out to 500.
This is a pretty heavy lens weighing in at 4.6 pounds but for those who would like to use a monopod or tripod you can use the included lens collar. I personally would not shoot this lens with a monopod or tripod for still images. The VR is so fantastic in this lens that the only thing you have to worry about are your biceps getting tired.
The lens is priced at $1,396.95 which is reasonable considering the range you're getting. The Sigma Contemporary 150-600 is $1000 and the Sport is $2000 which puts this lens not to far away from the lower end sigma offering.
I have said in the past I am not a huge fan of mega zoom lenses. Most of that sentiment comes from variable aperture lenses which this is not one. Knowing that you are at a fixed F5.6 means less thinking as you zoom. Whereas with variable aperture lenses you always have to watch as you zoom that you're not losing light.
From the few samples images I took this lens looks extremely sharp wide open. If you're one of those people who think you can't blow out the background with a 5.6 let the image below prove otherwise. The focus seems to be quick and accurate and the VR is pure insanity.
Who is this lens for? If you are someone who does a lot of shooting outdoors and long distances but you don't want to spend 10k this lens is for you. Nature shooters, sports shooters and even portrait photographers could use this lens. When I say this lens is inexpensive I am referring to it in comparison to big long glass.
I fully will recommend this lens to anyone who primary shoots outdoors during the day. The reach you get are worth the tradeoffs you may face by having a 5.6. I could honestly see keeping one of these in my house for the times where I need extra reach in a smaller package.

That guy in the background I just can't even..
Great video and review Jared! Loved your presentation!
Thanks for showing the test shots, and the VR demo. That was amazing. I received the shipping notice on mine today. Can't wait to test it out myself.
how are you liking the new glass?
Your contribution is always worth a listen.
The samples look great, this lens is a beauty.
Great review of a lens only having shot stationary subjects with it. You the man.
The wind tunnel test convinced me to get the Nikon. Thanks for the scientific testing!
I thought you were arrogant in the beginning, but I was wrong, you really know your gear and I have picked up many tips from your demos, thank you , keep up your OUTSTANDING demos.
The sniff test is always the best part.
Yo Jared, some people may be putting you down and such but you have taught me more about cameras and lenses to where I am taking better photos and have a better knowledge than i have ever thought possible!!
Jared, thanks! Was really looking forward to some reviews of this lens. I'm looking for some more range to do some trackside shooting. I think this lens would be it.
Hi Jared! This lens or the Sigma 150 600 C? Like very much your reviews!
Nice. Can you do a test with Sigma 150-600 sport vs 150-600 C vs Tamron 150-600 vs Nikon 200-500 F5.6 VR. Have been so nice to see. I have pre-orderd the nikon but it´s fun too see. Keep up the god worke.
I just purchased this lens (should arrive next week) and I'm very much looking forward to shooting with it. I have a Tamron 150-600mm lens on my Nikon D7200 currently, so this is an upgrade. I would still like to see the 200-500 compared with the New Tamron 150-600mm G2 that just came out. Interested to see how it does in comparison.
Great video, how would you compare the lens image quality to the $2700 Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ? I'm looking to purchase one of these and am leaning to the cheaper 200-500mm that was just released. Outdoor sports and wildlife shoots mainly.
excited to finally see this on KZhead ...but man, that guy in the back is hilarious... lol at when he misfired the final pose xD
can not wait...on order!
thanks for your sniffing test. I love nikon gear, Iam glad to see it every time. (Canon Reviews are not for me). Now I cant wait for the beautiful 24-70 VR 2.8
Dang, Its pretty sharp. Usually these lenses get soft at 500mm. I like that its 5.6 consistently.
Did I hear you are coming to Minnesota? When, where, and for what?
i saw the mtf and it looks even better than the 80-400. what do you think? should i buy it or save more for the new 300 f/4E+tc14 for wildlife?
Hey Jared. How was the focus speed on the 200-500, compared to the Sigma?
Hi Jared, maybe à bird shoot test review ? Thanks for the info !
I do a lot lot of airshow photography witch means following fast moving subject would you say the AF is capable of the task?
I'm fairly new to Photography and wondering if this will work with a DX camera?
Looks like an awesome lens, Finally nikon has some budget telephoto lenses toe compete with cannon, sigma, and tameron.
Hi I love your reviews it comes some real word review with the new Nikon 200-500mm with the D7200 on kids basebaa? Thanks
I am thinking on borrowing this from NPS. You have to review this at a soccer or football game, and compare it to a 300 2.8.
Jared...do we know why Nikon chose not to nano crystal coat the 200-500? Seems like it would be a given to do that. -Matt-
Jared I've been thinking about purchasing the Nikon 80 - 400, but now I'm having second thoughts. How does the image quality compared between the Nikon 80-400 compare to this lens?
Excellent lens, affordable price, I expect a fair comparison between this Nikon 200-500mm 5.6 VR and the Sigma 150-600mm 5.6/6.3 DG OS sport. These two lenses are the BEST today, considering image quality and price! The old lenses are too obsolete for many dense sensors of today. The new lenses are the best, many NEW lenses of Sigma and Nikon are designed for dense sensors. The Nikon 200-500mm 5.6 VR and the Sigma 150-600mm 5.6/6.3 DG OS sport are VERY GOOD even in front of dense sensors as the Nikon D750 sensor, the Nikon D810 sensor, the Nikon D7200 sensor.
Wow, for less than 1500 dollars, that's a steal! If I were a Nikon shooter, I'd seriously take this in consideration as for my next lens!
+Giuseppe Pipia I will wait to see if it beats the Tamron or not :).
Jaime Duncan I think alike Jared here: if you can get the same brand lens on your camera, don't look at alternatives. If you see the pictures he uploaded on Flickr, you can see that this lens is unbelievable!
+Jaime Duncan The Nikon 200-500mm F5.6 VR destroys the Tamron, sure. The real battle is between the Nikon 200-500mm F5.6 VR and the Sigma 5.6/6.3 150-600mm DG OS sport!
+Giuseppe Pipia Yes, www.flickr.com/photos/jaredpolin/sets/72157658750691901/ VERY GOOD on Nikon D4s. With the Nikon D810 may even BETTER!
berto1999 Hi, this sound like good news. Is it the result of side by side comparison or it's an initial impression from comparing different images.
Jared Nikon D810 user , Can it be using with nikon Tele converters and which one would be preferable ? Also which one to go for Tamron 150-600 ,Sigma 150-600 or Nikon 200-500
would the 200-500mm be good to nikon d810 for flightspotting? :)
could you compare the nikon 200-400 f/4 to the nikon 200-500 f/5.6. I know the 200-400 cost much more so it should be a higher quality but can you see a difference? Is it worth the extra money? Thanks
please make a hands on review please :)) im saving already for this , thanks in advance
Can you use it with a crop sensor camera?? Nikon D5500?
Could you please tell me the manufacture country of this lens? Thank you very much
2:04 the guy behind! So funny! 😂😂
Hi sir which 1 to buy sigma 150-600 c or Nikon 200-500 ? Plz do answer thanks
500mm is such a huge length! you have to be a very dedicated photographer to use it as much as it is worth
This seems like a great lens! The RAW files look pretty damn sharp to me, but I would have loved to see how sharp it is at something like f/8 :P And I would rather buy this than the Sigma 150-600mm. I find the fixed aperture of f/5.6 to be more useful than the bigger zoom range. That is also why I bought a Tokina 12-24mm f/4 instead of the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6. I sacrificed the 2mm at the short end (which is a lot for at the short end of the spectrum) to gain the fixed aperture for the longer end.
Where can I buy this lens at?Everyone is out of stock and I watched it very closely to release and never came avalible so maybe they sold out with preorders but if anyone knows where to buy new please be kind and let me knowI appreciate itThanks
If I shot Nikon and wanted a super zoom, I would get that over the sigma or tamron. It looks like a really good lens.. That VR was pretty damn impressive. I really like it, they did a great job with it.. Canon should update their 100-400 which is a great lens. But would be great to have something like Nikon did with a constant aperture. It is a great compliment if you have 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 and then the 200-500. I mean other than having a couple primes for specific things. You pretty much have all of your bases covered.
+Brian Michael Wish it was weather-sealed though... For that kind of money, even 25% more (like the Sigma Sport)... I do have the holy trinity and I'm willing to extend till 500 or 600mm, but I will never be at ease knowing that this 1,400$ costing outdoor lens will let me down sooner or later. Just a matter of time, even if you're careful with it...
Looks like this one is focusing faster than sigma 150 600 c... but looses in sharpness... waiting for your findings...
What are your thoughts when comparing it to the Sigma 50-500?
check the flickr group for the sigma and youll be amazed, its sharp also, this lens will be good as well
Plz, make a "walk around" with this lens... I want to see it in action. :)
Hello, what camera store are you filming this at? State ex. I really want to visit a camera store and see products instead of buying something I don't really want online.
+UsAirways FanHD Allens Camera
can i use teleconverter with this lens?
Do you still have your amazon affiliate link? I want to purchase something and I would like to help you if I can. Thanks
+Jerome Bergeron you can click on the banner on my site when it shows up.
I don't use Nikon and I won't need a lens like that for the types of pics I take, but it might be a very interesting lens for wildlife/bird shooters. And the price is very reasonable.
show us more sample shots jared!
where do i go see the pics?
Thank You!
sony needs to make a lens like this
we are still waiting for this vs sigma 150 600 contemporary vs tamron 150 600
This would be fantastic on my D810 and D500... Less so on the D4s and D5. I'm defo getting it!!
Jonathan Bruce how was the combo, I've just got the 800e and m using the 200-500
Yes It's Brilliant. Works really well on the D8xx series I found. Even on my D5.
Will you recommend this lens for d7200
I use this on my D5300
How does it work?? I have a D5500 and I'm skeptical to purchase since its a crop sensor body.
I pre-ordered on August 5th and am very much looking forward to shooting with this lens. What can "Brown" do for me? Bring me my new zoom! :o)
+Bill Ferris hurry up brown.
+Jared Polin B&H just sent me a shipping notification for the 200-500. It should arrive by the middle of next week. To quote Bart Scott, "Can't wait!"
+Jared Polin Thanks, for sharing. If you do the side by side don't forget the Tamron. In good theory it has a better autofocus than the sigma and similar image quality (but lack the fine tune dock). Best regards,
Are you going to do a real world review with this lens?
This lens would look pretty good in my collection
How about planespotting?
Hi, Why do not show the lens bag or something like this? Does it include or no? If not, it is totally bad for Nikon
I was suprised how small the lens compared to the box was :-D

You can get a Sigma 150-500 OS for like 500 bucks on ebay.
I really wish Canon would introduce a 500mm f/5.6 lens for less than 2000$. It would be fantastic lens for wildlife for Aps-c shooters. I am jealous of Nikon users as they get this lens to choose from tele photo lens selection. Also with this lens priced at 1400$ mark it puts that 80-400 in an awkward position, that lens is going to see a drastic drop in sales due to this lens.
+Chaitanya Shukla I would think so. But I still prefer the 80-400 any day. Because if I need a long lens that goes wide 200 isn't wide enough. The difference between 80 and 200 is HUGE. The difference between 400 and 500 not so much. I bet most people including pros wouldn't notice the difference between a slightly cropped 400mm photo and a native 500mm that is framed alike.
+DerSystematiker sure there is a difference between 80mm to 200mm but for birders and wildlife photographers who are already shooting on 300mm/400mm/500m/600mm primes that difference doesnt matter. People who are starting out in birding will choose this lens over the 80-400 or even the 300mm f/4 with 1.4x TC combo not for the price difference but for the zoom range and convenience of zoom.
+Chaitanya Shukla Nothing to be jealous about. Nikon did that because of Tamron and Sigma game changing 150 - 600 that destroys Nikon. Now T & S will probably reduce the prices of the 150 - 600 and Canon will be next to release an equivalent with a low price.
beavertown2006 I am really hoping Sigma or Canon will release a 500mm f/5.6 prime, just for people who are birding on budget. Maybe a 400mm f/4(non DO) will also work as long as the price is below 2200$ it will sell like hot cakes. Majority of birders that I know of shoot with a 300mm f/4(canon/Nikon) with 1.4x TC combo or Canon 100-400 or Canon 400mm f/5.6. Most of these people are getting very good results with these lenses and these are the people who are just starting birding on budget.
that guy video bombing at the back 😵😂✌✌
I wish canon would come out with something like this as this lense is very affordable
Damn it's a beast at 3.3kg. 400g more than 120-300, which with 1.4x TC on DX would giva ya 250-630 f/4, but $$$$.
that man is hilarious not jarrerd u!!!
I really feel like this should be nicknamed "the bazooka" I'm trying to imagine 750mm of focal length on my d7000, good lord!
Would you recommend this on a D5500?
i want oneeeeeeeee!
HI JARED !!! Great Channel Dude, i realy enjoy your videos, Canon and Sony are growing every day in the photography market, it seems like Nikon has nothing to release you know?? I mean we have Canon EOS 5DS R and Sony a7RII, i hope see Nikon in this FIGHT in a near future!!! Keep the good work !!! See ya
I have absolutely no need for this lens. But I WANT it.........
Great review (except for that dickweed in the background)!
ps. There is no reason not to used indoors, just increase the ISO sensitivity of the sensor.
pretty nice not that expensive either
05:36 Yeah, videobombed... That guy in the background stole Jareds thunder complete - way cooler :-D
Nikon is smart because it match in the range: 14-24mm F/2,8 24-70mm f/2,8 70-200mmf/2,8 (Nikons famous dream-team) And This one 200-500mm F5.6 VR One problem, you will need someone to carry 70 pounds gear AND a good Insurance!
how can that be 300-750mm with the same 5.6 on DX bodies????..... if it is on DX bodies then the aperture will be 8.4
+Jim Singler Actually, the amount of light and depht of field is affected, soooo 5.6 in FF is, in pratice, 8.4 in crop mode, WHEN compared to. But the angle of view is the more important aspect for crop sensor users. But tecnically, 200mm is.... 200mm... and 5.6 aperture is... always... 5.6 aperture.
+Jim Singler I haven't tried it piratically, but as far as the videos i followed they always say that Aperture is affected too with 1.5 crop factor...... Plz check and clarify me :)... I appreciate that
Troll
Sniff test? Are you from New York? LOL!
metabones?
lol the guy in the back
Throw this on a dx body and you are looking at a 300-750mm f/8,4 lens, not f/5,6 as you mentioned.
No, that's wrong. If you use a teleconverter it will stop down to F8. It will still be f5.6 on a DX body on the entire range. (without the tc).
i'm wishing i wasn't a canon guy at the moment. canon's IS is no where near as good.
+Ewicberger Tamron's VC is very goood. So if you need the best VC you can get it will sometimes beat the Nikon. And in the other hand, Canon has a 70-200mm that is actually a 70-200mm we Nikon shooters in the other hand a heavy 70-135mm lens (below more than 10m, 30fts). Why I did was go Tamron for the 70-200mm. (I shoot Nikon)
Me to I so want to change to Nikon
Lose the guy in the back next time. Otherwise, great and entertaining video. Thanks
dat man behind at 2:06
0:58 lmao
Nerver gets old
Well, I don´t sniff at my Nikon Lenses, I yust use them... :-) I´ll gonna buy this Lens when it is aviable here...
Funny guy behind you 👎🏻 video from you good👍🏻
Should have done a sniff test on the guy in the background
✌✌✌😁
Blah blah blah
You need to tell that guy in the background to stop acting like an idiot, it makes a mockery out of your videos. I like your videos but he's like an annoying fly you want to swat!
yeah .. everything is fantastic if it comes to your videos. definitely you will get paid by Nikon as a commercial promoter. but your videos are all commercial and misleading the viewers. i really cant trust anything of what you say in your cheap silly videos.
