From Galaxy Quest and Charlie's Angels, to Moon and Three Billboards, Sam Rockwell is one of the most diversely talented actors around. But he's not just a great character actor... he's a gosh darn good dancer. And Sam Rockwell finds some way to hoof it in just about every movie he's in. Let's take a look.
Written & edited by Danny Boyd
No one dances like Sam
^^For real. Everybody go check out Flight Facilities for the full music video. You’ll be hooked. And the song alone (Down to Earth) is downright fire^^ -Danny
Either one of the best compliments or one of the worst insults to give someone.
Nobody has the moves like Rockwell 🎵🎶🕺
@@CinemaStix I checked it out, it's just gorgeous. I like how his dancing in the video starts a little rough and then progressively gets more confident and relaxed. I thinks when he puts the hat on, he levels up. And then the ending is just fun!
He really does rock well
Sing like no one’s listening Love like you’ve never been hurt before Dance like Sam Rockwell in an otherwise entirely serious movie
This
@Medlife Crisis Awesome, thank you. Quick, unusually deep information dive (and question): I believe I have just found the next quote I can put on a drawstring bag for some lucky person's upcoming birthday (I have about 15 of them plus textile colours left over from some event and it's a great low-threshold break from PhD stress). Should I cite you? Feels like it would make some interesting type of sense to put a small YT account name somewhere in a corner of that bag. Or better a more proper name? Let me know if you also enjoy this idea of appearing on someone's gym bag in some other part of the world. :) Oh, and do you happen to have a preference for the bag colour, black or cotton off-white?
I am making this altered version my new life‘s motto.
Lol
Well now I need to see if he danced in Three Billboards.
What I love about the iron man 2 dance was that he was just goofing off out of character until he got to the podium. He wasn't expecting them to keep it, just something fun for him to do instead of walking. Favreau originally cut it from the film but added it back in because they loved it and it added something to the scene and his character.
It totally did. To me it showed a guy who thinks he can win over a crowd the way Stark does, but in reality is just a total doofus.
Exactly, the impression I got was that he was peacocking, but also oblivious to how transparent it was.
@@CinemaStix kinda reminds me of behaviour of other, not so fictional billionaire.
@@CinemaStix That was exactly it. Tony doesn't do it to impress. He does it because that's who he is. Justin Hammer does it to be like Tony. That said, Justin's pathetic showboating kinda made Tony's showboating in the film's opening look childish too. Justin was a clownish reflection of Tony's clowning.
I had no clue this man dances in every movie haha
There's something about Sam that's just incredibly likable. I always enjoy it when he turns up in movies. He's definitely one of those guys that you think should have a bigger career, and then you realise his career is pretty damn big regardless. He's just low-key.
🎯💯
How can anyone dislike this magnificent actor? He is such a delight
The dancing in Charlie’s angels…. Holy crap so chilling as his whole demeanor changes .. so well done
Yeah, it's one of those movie scenes I never forgot having watched it as a child lol. Am 30 now I still remember it.
Is it weird that i thought his dancing reveal scene in the movie was the most entertaining moment in the movie?
Agreed
@@merryryelySame. Its a core memory of mine watching that scene, when he revealed in song and dance how he was the true villain I was just as shocked as drew Barrymore was.
@@jtrinidad1884 Not that weird because the movie isn't that good, but that individual scene is pretty legit.
I couldn't love Rockwell more if I tried. I first saw him all those years ago in Green Mile and Galaxy Quest - two massively different characters, both released in the same year. I knew he had 'it'. His dancing is the icing on the perfectly delicious cake!
I have loved him and his dancing for years!! Mr. Right is one of my favorite movies of all times!!
Agreed
Yo-yo-you're just my type!
Love that movie! Anytime I'm feeling down I watch that and I'm happy again. Anna Kendrick is fantastic too. And Tim Roth! 😂
That movie is awesome
First time I recall being aware of him was because of his dance sequence in Charlie’s Angels. Brilliant choice as a way to instantly communicate to the audience that this nerdy, awkward guy is both the secret villain in total control and also his weakness of being too cocky.
I remember that and always have. His dancing was how I have always remembered him. Hahaha.
Totally!
Same here. I fell in love that day.
@@spacebar9733yeah that scene was uh..... let's just say it was a defining moment in my life lmao
Same here. That scene blew me away - i rewound & watched it a fee times, he was just too good & so unexpected!
Sam Rockwell is the guy you want to be at parties, the one cool guy who dances!
Yes
Or acts like a dork then *becomes* the cool guy when he dances.
@@CinemaStix Hey bro, what's the name of the song in the video??
There are a couple songs, but if you’re wondering about the last one, it’s A Little Higher by Sture Zetterberg.
@@CinemaStix Thanks 🙏
I hope he never stops dancing, he's so good at it. And he makes it look so fun.
I love Sam Rockwell. It can be really hard for hardcore character actors like him to be able to give that personality and brand while also keeping each performance fresh and plot-useful, but he manages to ace it every time. Truly one of the most underrated actors from the last couple decades!
Charlie’s Angles has got to be it for me. It just was so tight with the narrative, and SHOCKING to my young mind. He and his dancing have stuck with me for decades because of that performance.
The "revenge is fun" dance was pretty sweet (with the editing and all).
Oh my God, I LOVED the Charlies Angel dance! It immediately came to mind when I saw this vid.
The way he changes his facial expression from sweet to scary is one of the creepiest moments in a non-horror film!!!
His villain reveal in that movie was A+++
Me too!!
The man is a natural dancer and just straight out legend, he has no choice but to dance as it's like a steam valve to ease the pressure on his storage tank of awesomeness that keeps overflowing.
Hehe. This.
This comment is amazing lol
If you look waaaaaay back, dancing was done for many reasons, spiritual, war, seasonal bounties of good harvest etc., but the best reason to dance is just go and let it go!
👍 so well said!
He's a great actor, with insane range, and makes every movie he's in better. National treasure. Great dancer too!
Love this guy. If you haven't seen "Mr. Right" then you don't know how to have fun.
That dance reveal in the Charlie's Angel movie was so incredible. I'll never forget it.
Seriously one of my favorite actors. He oozes impossible charm, incredibly disarming, and at any moment he can do a turn into emotional, dramatic performances. Just brilliant.
Kelly, Walken, Travolta, Bacon, Swayze, Hiddlestone all excellent movers. 🕺🏼🕺🏼🕺🏼🕺🏼🕺🏼🕺🏼💃🏽
Sam Rockwell is one of my favorite actors, and so so underrated.
That scene in Iron Man 2 where he dances onto the stage kills me everytime. He was so smooth and cocky and it fit the situation perfectly, being that his character was about to make a big reveal. I thought that entrance was scripted and choreographed, but now I see it's actually his trademark 😂
In Iron man 2, It felt as if he was trying too hard to be a smooth and affable as Tony and failing hard at it, but he had the dance to match that attitude.
The Average White Band completed that scene.
He was getting it!! Love that shot!
hahaha I love that scene too... well the whole character really but yeah it was perfect for the scene!
In Iron Man 2, that was the whole point. The character he played was making one bad decision after the next. He was evil and incompetent.
I was a professional dancer for almost 20 years. Fosse was my biggest influence as a dancer and choreographer. When I heard they were doing Fosse/Vernon, I worried that they wouldn't be able to find an actor who could play Bob properly. Once I knew it was going to be Sam Rockwell, I KNEW it was going to be great! And it was, and so was he! But Michelle Williams became Gwen Verdon. I'm still in awe of that performance. Anyway, great video!
I LOVE Sam Rockwell. It was his Charlie’s Angels role that first introduced me to him, which I thought he was phenomenal in, and every time I saw him in something else I was like omg Sam Rockwell! Good for you buddy nabbin another role like this! Such a well rounded guy. Seems super nice too.
“It’s getting a little repetitive so I’ll have to learn some new moves”. What a cold line.
NO SIR!!!
He is being too hard with himself, he is a perfectionist
His "villain reveal" Marvin Gaye moment in that Charlie's Angels pic was one of my all-time favourite movie bits. That's when my crush on him really started. And GD, is he a good actor! Moon was a triumph.
Yes and yes! Same. Wish I could’ve used the song in this.
@@CinemaStix Totally! After the Blurred Lines case, though... could have been PARTICULARLY tricky 😕
That was an epic moment. That movie is seriously under-rated.
Great user namer you have there, I had a genuine lol!
@@SP-ki5gn Why, thanks, man. It abides 🙂
Thank you for making this video, have always enjoyed the way Sam Rockwell dances in movies 🎥 🕺. You explained it all so well.
This was a ray of freaking sunshine. Super positive vibes and nicely done :)
Whoo! Thank you :) -Danny
💯
Indeed
@@CinemaStix thank you, really. A ray of sunshine. 😊
There is nothing more joyful than Christopher Walken or Sam Rockwell dancing. Just makes me smile.
Made me think of Seven Psychopaths, both were great in that movie.
Walked in Pennies from Heaven. What a star.
Just a natural antidepressant
Ive always thought he was underrated. never understood what held him back from A list. he is quite good at acting. Among the best, Id say.
I LOVED him in Galaxy Quest!
Sam is incredible. I’m a dance and theatre instructor, and Sam Rockwell is mentioned frequently in my classes. All acting has a touch of dance, all dance has a touch of acting, and Sam has both.
Agreed...I also think Christopher Walken is his lost lost pop. Both love to dance, just from different eras.
@@Peanutdenver Walken is such an amazing actor. He actually trained for a time as a dancer at the Washington Dance Studio as well. It’s one of those tidbits of information that you just don’t really expect. I really need to see Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell doing a dance/music video together.
wonderfully put!
Hmmm. Well done, your channel description. A tree supports more life in death than when alive... life is beautiful, fading to orange, red, and brown.
@@Cale-Davison Thank you for reading my channel description rather than just resorting to calling me names or saying that I’m disgusting. I truly appreciate that. Very few people go to the trouble because…well, because the username really does come off poorly without the explanation of what it represents. I do understand though that it perhaps is a knee jerk reaction for many people to my admittedly bizarre username. Again, thank you.
Freakin love Sam Rockwell because he just has great timing in everything he does. In *Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy* there's a scene where Sam falls flat like a pancake and jumps up going "I'm all good!!" Man can dance, but that brief moment always has me laughing hysterically when very few actors have that ability. 🤣🙌🙌🙌👏
That man is gold, and deserves much more recognition. After all he is the president of the galaxy
Is there air?! You don’t know!
yeah totally, he is super talented. Very smooth
I grew up with Lawn Dogs and Box of Moonlight and could never wait to see what this guy would do next. Then when Confessions of a Dangerous Mind came out I was blown away and thought it couldn't get any better, until Moon (his delivery of the line "what happened to mommy, sweetheart" in the context of that whole story made the entire film for me). It was then weird to see him on talk shows getting pigeon-holed as this guy known for his dance moves (just as you said, the way Tom Cruise is known for his run). I always thought him dancing on screen was the sign of just how absolutely relaxed he was on set and having a blast making whatever he was making. He's got such good comedic timing and sharp sense of status and can easily carry plenty of heavy dramatic weight all in the same character. I'll watch anything Sam's in, dance or no dance.
This is a very good pick me up video! I’ve watched it several times and will be back a bunch more. So very well put together with love for the subject and proper source attribution
I love his dance moves. Especially in Mr. Right it's incorporated into his character and it's fabulous.
Oh yes, I agree. Mr. Right was stupendous choreography finely woven into the character and masterfully performed. Bravo Sam Rockwell!
I love him in that movie, even the way they had him dance into the title sequence just felt so correct.
His dancing in Charlie’s Angels is so iconic. I remember thinking he was so bad ass when I was a kid during that scene.
I'm intensely happy about you bringing out this detail, Danny. This is a heart-happy smile you've given me, man. Thank you.
One of my fav actors, the dancing is a bonus. Just seen Argylle - loved it.
I love that he gave a nod to Christopher Walken (the other movie dance king)! Sad that they didn't dance together in Seven Psychopaths :'-(((
For real. At least they got to work together. On stage once, too.
Seems like dance can be a major factor in bringing life to cinematic adaptations. They’ve impacted generations both in the past and in the future.
What?
@@esseeedee i guess they meant to say is imagine a musical adaptation, but more on dancing.
Such an underrated actor. And his dancing makes my heart sing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this compilation.
He loves to dance, and we all love it when he does
MASSIVELY underrated actor. One of the best of this generation in my eyes...and I reckon he's still got his stellar role still to come!!!
Moon is one of my favorite movies
Sailor Moon? Sailor Moon Eternal?
He is on purpose not profiling to be a classical leading man, and that's for the best since then he would be made to do things that are not him. The "underratedness" can be a blessing that way, creatively.
Best of this generation??? Ok, this is a general comment: someone being one of your favorites does not make them one of the best.
@@carlrice1774 talk about twisting words! 😳🤦🏼♂️ I said "One of the best of this generation". I didn't say "THE best"! Nor did I say he was my favourite! There are a lot of actors these days who get kudos all the time but can't actually act, they just repeat the lines they've learnt as themselves. Chris Hemsworth for example; sells seats but can only do one role type...and not particularly great eaither! Sam Rockwell is incredibly diverse and ALWAYS gives a performance which convinces you of the character he is playing, THAT is great acting! If you need convincing and haven't watched them yet, watch "Moon" and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" for two of his stellar roles. And you mustn't forget him in "The Green Mile" either, EPIC acting! But don't take my word/opinion on it! Clearly I am mislead in my belief that he is one of the best of my generation, because he's ONLY won 41 Awards and been nominated ONLY 76 times... ...so nobody else thinks he's great either!!! 🙄🤦🏼♂️🤣
Man I thought I was the only one who saw that he seems to dance in any movie, Charlie's Angels has his coolest moves tho, imo...😂👌
Nah his best moves are in Mr. Right. Probably his funniest and coolest character.
Hands down my favorite actor. I just love this guy…and the dancing is the cherry on the cake.
thank you for this video, its so necessary.
Love this dude. So many good moments in cinema history unforgettable because of him, ESPECIALLY THE GREEN MILE
omg The green mile. Billy the kid, what an incredible performance that was
Well he had not danced in that but made chief dance on that chair. Does it count?
Thats where i know him from! That movie broke my heart
Go watch Moon from 2009, if you haven't seen it, you're welcome. One of my favorite movies, and definitely my favorite Sam Rockwell movie.
@@jonesey1981 Yes MOON! Just an AMAZING movie!
When you realise that the wolf in The Bad Guys (who is voiced by Sam Rockwell), also has a dance sequence! Jeez that guy just loves to shake a leg on set!
Heck yeah!
@@CinemaStix I saw it and didn't connect that Sam dances in every project, but it is a great idea from the creators to throw it in as a bonus for those that do. The best bit is that Sam's dancing is never forced in, perhaps because he has no professional dancing background so it is just natural and therefore fits his characters
So cool man! Good job, thanks.
John Travolta does actually dance in every single one of his films.
Sam Rockwell is such an icon. His dancing gives each of his characters a certain swagger. So cool, even when they're quirky.
You know? He does really dance all the time. I never thought about it. And yes, that Charlie's Angels dance was iconic.
Loved this video! This is one of those things that was always on my mind when I saw him dance in his movies. It is interesting, and you might think it was not worth making a full video on it, but this one did it and was marvelous.
Discovered your channel pretty late. Just wanted to say thank you. I've always loved cinema and watching videos that are well thought out from someone who understands and clearly appreciates the art form is so enjoyable. There are so many nuances and techniques of cinematography and storytelling I couldn't put into words or understand the technical specifics of but felt often just as a preference. Having someone dissect them in a way that is easily digestible is such a cool thing. Wish nothing but further success for you.
This makes me sooo happy to read, thank you! Lots, lots more to come. Also.. I’ve only been around a little over a year, so hardly late in my book :) -Danny
I love Sam Rockwell, dude has the most likeable air to him, this absolutely easy going, charming charisma. Glad he found his way into films, he'd have been wasted anywhere else
Sam Rockwell was once one of those guys you recognize but don't remember, he even kind of parodied it in Galaxy Quest - which ironically became one of his more recognized roles. But more recently, the moment he walks on screen, you know the movie is going to become even better. He's gone from being simply recognizable to being recognizable for good content.
Epic video. Very well said & done.
excellent clip! right rhythm, speed, music and narration. thanks!
Yep...This guy is an incredibly versatile actor. He has been is so many movies but his career kinda snuck up on us. I had already watched several of his movies before I realized it was him that created the most memorable character in all of them. He has an incredibly colorful style that overshadows his very low key personality. He's the guy who enters the room, does something amazing then leaves with everyone looking at each other thinking how amazing that was but not wondering who that was or if they have seen him before. He's a contradiction of elements that he has somehow combined perfectly.
Hands down one of the greatest character actors working. A master of his craft!
thank you, Danny Boyd. lovely video
Great work. Really learned a lot, as I saw it, but didn't see it. "It" being Sam dancing always. Great editing and presentation by CinemaStix. Also, perfect amount of information. Concise. A skill.
:)
who doesn't like Sam Rockwell, dancing or not, he's one of my fav actors :)
Even though his character is the more unlikeable version of an antihero, his role in Three Billboards outside ebbing Missouri was one of the best I’ve seen and he got that Oscar for best side actor so fkng deserved.
Man I was so into the video and enjoying my wiskey that I didn't even realise that the video was about to end in the next 10 seconds.. Great video..
My absolute fave, thank you for showing him some love!
Sam Rockwell is by far one of my favorite actors. His diversity as an actor is amazing. Every character he steps he is able to create so many dimensions and life to that character.
He definitely brings a memorable performance to every role he plays.
Danny, you are an incredible filmmaker! I have loved all of your video essays and I feel like I'm watching someone at the beginning of a great filmmaking career. Please keep it up and keep pursuing your dreams!
Thank you!! I hope it’s just the beginning. But even if it’s short-lived, I’ve been so, so lucky to be here :)
@@CinemaStix Always the best attitude! But in all honesty, you are definitely very talented with a unique and keen eye. The only problem is its all about who you know these days; so I will wish you the best networking!!!
I have adored Sam Rockwell since "The Green Mile". He was so evil and so funny he simply awed me. In a cast of legendary character's for "that guy" to stand out so blatantly he caught my heart forever. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Matchstick Men, too many to name but the one I admired most was "Best of Enemies"...emotional and amazing. His dancing is hot cause it's real and simply an add on to an absolutely wonderful actor. Sometimes "that guy" supersedes the lead actors and Sam has an uncanny ability to do so in every movie. Literally hot to trot!! Love ya man! Please Sam...dance with me!
Sam Rockwell's dancing makes me unexplainably happy
Let us never forget one of his first roles. A teenage forerunner in the shredder underground world in the first ninja turtles. He’s the one that shows the main kid Danny around the place when he arrives.
If he had the clout he does now he could've worked in a dance with the Turtles...lol.
LOL, so great.
Sam Rockwell is one of my favorite actors. Thanks for making this video! I never noticed this, but now I can't unsee it.
Thats the best video i've seen in month , fluckin love this guy ❣️🔥🤟🏼
I've been a fan for years. I first really took notice of him in Green Mile but it was n Galaxy Quest I began to fall for his charm. Each time I saw him in something I was more impressed and intrigued. He's a highly skilled actor and just very likable, even as a villain. One of those actors i would love the opportunity to meet in a social venue.
GALAXY QUEST! Watched that again with my wife and kids for the first time!! Everyone is So good and Sam Rockwell lives!!! Spoiler alert.
Snap! that was him in Green Mile. Kudos
The Green Mile…man, Rockwell’s performance is one of the top two reasons to watch that movie
Love this video, so good to see recognition for someone so talented but underrated. Awesome concept!
Thank you! I don’t talk about individual performers often enough on the channel. Seemed like the right place to start :) -Danny
This is a really great video, the final minute of the video I just got up while eating and started to dance. Really, really good job! Congrats !! ❤
Fun, fun, fun! A great, understated, loving look!
It's hard to say exactly what it is about your videos, but no matter the subject, no matter the title, no matter how niche, you never fail to make something interesting, entertaining, and unique to you. These are some of my favourite videos on KZhead...and I watch a lot of KZhead😅
Ditto!!
Got to second this, put the words right out of my mouth!
He is one of my all-time favorite actors. Just such a wonderful talent.
The reveal in Charlie's Angel was so good. As a kid watching that movie, I certaintly hated his character so much I ended up despising Sam for a while. And his portrayal of Justin Hammer didn't help either. It wasn't until I watched Mr. Right and Jojo Rabbit I realized he's a cool actor and a smooth dancer.
Love this guy. One of my faves.
Rockwell is one of the very few actors who I'll watch whatever he's in.
Sam is a great dancer, an amazing actor, and honestly a really cool guy. I love to watch him in every movie he's in.
I have been so in love with Mr Rockwell since the first time I saw him. He plays very odd roles but also very likeable, even loveable. Thanks for this tribute.
Have you seen The Green Mile? His character is anything but likable and lovable.
@@williambryan3346 one out of how many? Really? He is a very likable guy is what I'm saying, good actor too.
Excellent video. Original and entertaining. Thanks!
Sam understands THE key tenet of successful dance: move with confidence. Love it.
I was about to be upset that I didn't see Zaphod Beeblebrox on there until you showed him near the end. It's my favorite Rockwell dance scene. Dodging what equates to storm trooper accuracy lasers with his dance moves is so funny to me.
Haha I was looking for him too. Was glad when I saw it
I've loved Sam's work for years now... but never noticed his proclivity for dance. Thanks for this video.
Great actor and great video thanks!
What a nice way to pay tribute to your favorite actor! Instead of getting into the details of his acting, which would've spoiled the magic (although I would've been so tempted... like how does he do it??), you chose to take time to appreciate what makes him... Sam Rockwell. That makes this video more genuine, more heartwarming.
Oh, I’m so glad! I care about every topic I cover, immensely so. But this one was no doubt particularly near and dear that I get right. :) -Danny
@@CinemaStix You seem to prioritize sharing love for movies over being right about what you may know. You make KZhead a more beautiful place. Keep doing what you’re doing, Danny.
:)
I've been so in love with him for YEARS! I hope he never stops!
When I’m sad or have a bad day I watch a compilation video of him dancing. It has never failed to improve my mood.
I consider him one of the top actors. I put him next to the best. I was excited to see Moon because he was alone and all him and it was fantastic. Dancing is fun and he is extending the character by dancing. Movies that showcase characters that are interesting and happen to dance a little when the feeling comes.
coolest video on yt...bravo! sam is one of the best to ever walk, dance and act!
Sam is an icon in every definition of the word. it's hard not to smile when watching someone who genuinely exudes talent in everything he does. I love the man.
In the Iron man 2 scene, when he does a turn, stops for a second, and then doubles down and his legs go crazy fast, had me rolling in the theater. In Matchstick Men, easing Nick Cage into going along with the girl and bringing her into the fold, only to be betrayed. My God. Sam's is truly the man.
Though I didn’t find the content of the video useful I really like your storytelling style. Nicely done man.
I love him! Whenever I see his name on a project I know it’s a must see.
