    • Hey Dennis, look up crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED)and hardening the target. There’s a ton of solid info out there and a lot of it has worked. There will always be the exception to most rules but criminals are lazy or thry wouldn’t be criminals. A little deterrance goes a long way.

    • @@bbrown5887 that was insightful- that criminals are lazy or they wouldn’t be criminals. They’re also often sociopaths. I used to try to help poor people out by giving them odd jobs. But after the second one called me up asking for more money for doing nothing and I said no, and took joy in telling me what he had stolen from me, or physically attacked me - now I rather see them starve to death than be additional carbon footprints on our planet. The government needs to cut it out with welfare and paying welfare moms more money they more babies they pop out.

  • Thank you for this. As far as preventing the door from being lifted out of the track, I measured the gap at the top edge of the door (~.5") and bought a wooden dowel of that diameter at the hardware store for $2.50 for 4'. Slide the dowel into the gap between the top of the door and the track. Of course I also have a dowel in the bottom track. The reason I mention the dowel, which does the same as the screw solution you mention, is that some people may not have the tools to do the screw method, or maybe don't want to put a hole in the track.

And in cities like los angeles, having pictures of the criminals doesn't do much to return your stolen items. I know people who have been burglarized several times. Each time they "up" the security.

  • Great video. Bandits are lazy so doing anything to make it harder for them usually helps. Yes they can just smash the glass but that makes a lot of noise risking detection so it’s not preferred. A Live monitored security camera that lets them know they’ve been detected is another excellent tool. Having just a video camera usually just records the crime showing you what you already know. Balance deterrance with evidence gatheing for best success.

Back then, we used to have a wooden stick in the gap to keep the door from being slid. Still, from what I have seen in footage, burglars usually just break the glass.

    @Tr0nzoid@Tr0nzoid11 ай бұрын

  • One of the easiest and most effective is a dowel/pin through the frame of the sliding and into the fixed door. Do it at the top (where there's no glass) in the middle of the opening where the two doors overlap. I made nice ones for my mom with an aluminum rod from Home Depot and a nice wooden door pull (also from HD). Drill a hole all through the inside door and the inside side of the outside door (NOT ALL THE WAY TO THE OUTSIDE). Put the pin through and there's no way to slide the door or pick it up with a crowbar or suction pads because now the two doors are locked together. Don't do the screws in the top frame as you'll pierce the water barrier and possibly allow water in around the door. Don't do that.

  • 5:48 also leave enough for expansion and contraction of the materials (roof, doors, windows etc) and your house in general. Having those screws too close can cause the sliding door frame to put pressure on the door when it gets full sun and heats up. Potentially binding the door or at worse put strain to the glass... maybe add a rubber grommet to the head of the screw or something like RV weather stripping so it's not metal on metal contact.

  • Some modern sliding doors come with "deadbolt" mechanisms on the door. Two bolts extend out of the door into the frame from both the top and bottom of the door. This prevents the "lifting" break in technique. While an extra security measure or two is wise, it's also important to remember that it is just a glass door. If someone is hellbent on getting in, they will just break the glass...

Luckily, I had only started dead-bolting the front door for the past two weeks & they had to work to get past the inner screen door (behind the sliding door). It totally freaked me out & I couldn't get home fast enough for 6+ months each day... My solution was to put a small metal tab at the top of the sliding door, to limit how high the door could be raised out of the sliding door track. It seemed to work... 👍

  • Very very well done. Thank you. We recently had our slider replace by Anderson. The space on top is less than ¼". I think a strip of wood with double sided tape would be more effective than screws and doesn't mar the frame. This door has the security latch built in.

    • That's an excellent idea. You don't need screws to hold the shim in place. But, the screws might be easier to remove if you have a need to remove the door for your own reasons.

  • @4:57 the proper way to eliminate the sliding door gap is to actually adjust the roller. There's an adjustment screw that controls how far the roller comes out from the frame, and there's a screw like that on both top and bottom of most sliding doors! The idea is to adjust the rollers in such a way that the door moves smoothly, but snugly, and doesn't have enough play to be forced outside of the track without getting to the adjustment screw on the side of the door frame. Great tips otherwise, thanks for producing this!

    • Waste of time if they have steel wire, insert tween door and frame and just lift that dowel out and they're in.. i was sleeping on the sofa and woke up to this kid standing over me with a carving knife! I played dead til he went into a bedroom. Closed and locked the useless sliding door and dialed the cops n hung up. Laid back down after his thieving trip and played possum. He just unlocked the front door and away. No sign of the cops of course, dumbest idea just latching those doors with no bolt or key to lock the world out.

  • Something to check for: I've seen some sliding glass doors where the non-sliding side of the door can be unscrewed from the exterior. Four screws, the brackets come right out, and now the non-sliding half will slide.

We also have the plastic film installed on the glass inside - ours is clear & it's purpose is to prevent the glass from shattering if hit from the outside. I LOVE the idea of the screws up top so the door panel cannot be lifted out! I think we WILL be doing that. Thank you again. Judi

  • Awesome video! I already use the stick-in-the-track but could never figure out how to prevent lift out. The use of screws is so simple and quick that I feel like an idiot for not thinking of it before. The idea of changing out the original handle/lock is going to implemented shortly. The biggest problem I have with glass doors and windows is that they can simply be smashed to gain entry. But short of that, these ideas are great!

  • I use those metal door jambs (you used it for the slider track as an alternative to a wood dowel) on my front and rear doors. Many years ago, someone attempted to kick my door in but the door jamb didn't budge. I hope the person trying to break in received shin splints at the minimum for their efforts.
