  • I have 3 cats so my advice is: Before starting a grooming session always wait until your cat is laying relaxed on the floor before brushing. Pet her/him a minute before beginning brushing. Let them sniff the brush before you begin working on their fur. Remember that they have sensitive skin so GO LIGHTLY! Use a light touch! On shorthairs use a bristle brush not a wire rake. On longhaired cats, alternate every few wire rake strokes with a bristle brush strokes and repeat. Be gentle and be slow, not rough, and remember that below all cat fur there is delicate skin. If you're too vigorous it hurts them, and also gets them overstimulated. Your cat (s) will appreciate it!

    @artistocracy@artistocracy3 жыл бұрын
    • Both my cats will let me brush them.After breakfast I sit on the floor and they will come and sit between my legs.I'm gentle and (Jackson is right) that's the time to. feel and look for bumps, sores, or anything our of the ordinary. I also do this: I brush and pet, brush and pet, and so on. While I'm doing this I tell them what magnificent cats they are, how positively handsome their coats are and that they're the best cats in the world.😼😼😼

    • @@Alexi0s Alexa, you can leave the brush on the floor in a spot nearby where he often sits, or just some place where he can get used to seeing it. Try just carefully brushing his head and around the cheeks...mind the eyes, though, because a cat can suddelnly look up while you brush their head! Leave his fur in the brush to smell it so he knows it's his. Then when he's used to being brushed clean the fur out. My two old girls love being brushed. Good luck.

  • I addition to Jackson's advice for Andi, I'd add that brushing the face can be a reward for tolerating brushing in other areas. With my cat, I start with her head, brush the sides a bit, then back to the head for a reward, then a little bit more of the sides. Etc. It works well and gets her to tolerate the whole brushing session.

  • As a professional groomer, I will say that in my experience, MOST cats actually love being brushed.. if you use the right brush. My best trick is to leave a rubber curry brush on the table in front of them while I'm doing stuff they DON'T like as much and a lot of the time they start rubbing on the brush and it distracts them lol. I also reward a lot of them with brushing after they let me do something they hate (shaving pads, trimming feet, clipping nails, etc...). I have had a lot of owners absolutely shocked when they see their cats LOVING the brushing that they fight so hard at home for. A lot of times, if you put them up on a table or counter top or even washing machine or dryer, with a cozy towel under them (it also helps catch the hair you brush off) it is way easier/more enjoyable. Most clients I've suggest it to have reported back that it worked like a charm. Also using the proper brush or comb and proper techniques goes a long way

    @xtri0xinx@xtri0xinx2 жыл бұрын
    • To add to that... short haired cats usually get best results with a rubber curry brush and a metal comb (with at least a small section of it that has the tines/teeth closer together). For longer haired cats what usually works best is a slicker brush (usually with coated pins) and that same metal comb. Personally, I never recommend a Furminator tool... too much room for error (injury/irritation) and a good comb usually works better anyway (Chris Christensen makes an AMAZING cat comb). Rubber curry brushes are better for shedding too lol. Slicker brushes are fine for cats that don't shed a bunch but some cats have more of an aversion to slicker brushes than other types. Happy brushing, y'all lololol

  • This came at a perfect time. My husband and I just got our first cat and he is a long haired cat. He always has veiwed the brush as a toy and it has been nearly impossible to brush his back legs. Slowly(because im dumb) I realized that I always clip his nails right when he wakes up from his afternoon nap, because he is so calm, so I should also try brushing him at that time as well. It has been soooooo much better!

So she had fleas from the wild cats our step Grandfather feed. So my sister used a tiny barbie brush to slowly untange that matte. They BOTH had massive patience for one another to get that tangle out.

    @BiltmoreGhost@BiltmoreGhost3 жыл бұрын
    • For people reading this: just buy a dematting brush. There is a kind that has blades that cut the matts to reduces how much pulling there is. I try to brush my long haired cat regularly (daily if posso) with a normal brush like in this video and use the dematting brush if they form over time, maybe once every month or two.

  • I found out brushing my kitten when she’s sleepy it’s the best time. Also using shorter strokes and pretend like my brush is another cat grooming her (gentle, short strokes). Sometimes she’s ticklish/sensitive around some part of her back, but if I hold her fur and go slow, she’s fine with it. She occasionally purrs now when I brush her. She sheds quite a bit and brushing has helped a lot with controlling her shedding.

She always comes to ask for pets and instead of petting her, he switched to brushing. That worked! She's basically a sphere of fur, so he had to. • To all cat parents, before you use the brush on your cats, please use the brush on your skin and your hair first. Because I had been using KONG Zoom Groom on my two cats and at first I thought they work pretty good, until one day I tried to brush my hair with it just to test it and it pulled my hair so badly and my head was in so much pain. I have medium hair length. This KONG Zoom Groom is definitely NOT good for long hair cats and medium hair cats. It will pull their long hair or medium hair and they would feel the pain. Again, please test the brush or comb on your hair and skin first. Also I bought the Furminator and I tested it on my skin and it's very sharp that it kinda of scratch my skin and leave some thin lines on my skin. I decided not to use this on my cats because if it's too rough for me, it is too rough on my cats.

  • 😻It is so important to get into a regular grooming regime with your fur baby. Even the most difficult of cats can be won over eventually with regular grooming followed by a little treat as a reward. Have seen clients babies completely change from being aggressive at the start to absolutely loving being groomed after a few months. It all comes down to having a regular routine in place.😻

  • I once took in an elderly cat with very bad mats. I wanted to try and remove them and get her a new home. Her previous owner was over 80 years old, and the cat, Little Bit, was so sweet. But when you tried to tango with her mega tangles she'd snarl and hiss. But moments later when you stopped, she'd be back to purring and nuzzling you again. But the matts had to go, and I didn't have an electric razor, so they had to go with combs and scissors. She was particularly prone to peeing outside the litter box, or missing it entirely. My cat was extremely territorial, and Little Bit was in some form of distress and pain. Eventually I decided it wasn't fair to her and took the whole matter and Little Bit, so the nearby shelter. Within minutes of examining her, the rescuers working there found the problem. Little bit's legs were very arthritic. They got her cleaned up, and got her a foster home, where she died in her sleep 6 mos later warm and comfortable. That one issue, arthritis in the legs, caused every other problem, including mats.

  • I'm so glad I saw this video before my cat Geroo came to claim me. I just determined it would be a nice, gentle session each time. He does like his cheeks and head brushed (with a slicker), so when I brush farther down, if he starts flicking his tail, I go back to his head and give them some more love. My aunt had him for a few weeks, and when I asked her, she hadn't groomed him, so I did so gently! That day he came back to me three times to get brushed! I'm so glad I got to make it so nice for him!

  • My cats enjoy being brushed, but not with any of the brushes I've tried from pet stores. To be fair, the ones in pet stores are dagger-like. I use a toy off Amazon (On Amazon it's titled "HETOO Cat Catnip Toys,Interactive Cat Toothbrush Chew Toy for Kitten Kitty Cats Teeth Cleaning Dental Care, Crayfish Shape Pet Toy Cat" if anyone is interested in giving this a try). The bumpy side of the toy is very rounded and doesn't scratch their skin at all, but because it's hard rubber, it picks up hair REALLY well. You can even use it to clean off the spots where they lay down the most VERY easily. (However it should be noted that my cats are American shorthairs, so I don't think this would work for long haired cats. It's mostly to get rid of their shed coats, but it does an AMAZING job at doing it. I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who has a shorthair cat who struggles to get them brushed.) I would also be interested for Jackson himself to try it out on his shorthaired cats and see what he thinks.

Sometimes when I get up in the middle of the night she will go and roll in the litter box. I take it as she is happy to see me. She has been to vet and does NOT have any urinary issues. I know that large wild cats will roll in the dirt. I do not mind her doing it. I do not give her a bath when she does this (I have never given any cat a bath). I just want to know what you think of her behavior. All the best to you.

  • Ouuu! Stress stopper spray sounds great. Amen, Jackson! Approach , timing, and keeping the fur brush handy are keys to maintaining cat fur. The FURminator cat brush has been the best tool for my long hair cat. The best because it detangles minor tangles, removes excess fur and the cat likes the brush. (Big mats are for the veterinarians to remove because it’s SAFER , KINDER and more affordable than paying for the vet to stitch a cat. Jackson is correct that cat skin tears like paper.)

  • I love this video 😊 I’ve had my two kittens for a bit over a month now, and until this past weekend were wholly against being brushed (but managed to tolerate two separate rounds of claw trimming just fine! 🤯). I tried a metal slicker brush with rounded ends (I think it was both too big as well as maybe over-stimulating for the needs of their little kitten-fur (albeit currently semi-longhaired Maine Coons, though from their parents I think they’ll get fluffier as they get older!), a rubber Kong ZoomGroom (initially some success when I deployed it tentatively and gently when they were already mostly asleep and purring, but they were thoroughly disgusted when they caught wind of the rubbery smell and refused to let me continue! In fairness, I could see their exaggerated sniffing and Flehmen response, and I agreed with the smell aspect! Hoping this dissipates with time), a Pet Teezer (the light blue “small de-shedding and dog grooming brush”, which they initially rejected on seemingly all grounds!), and I eventually resorted to trying a tiny 5” (including handle) cushioned hairbrush I had for putting in a small bag to go out with for my own use, which was the best tolerated, though also the least effective on them 😆 One afternoon this past weekend I caught them in a particularly chilled and sprawling sleepy kind of mood, and managed to get in their third round of claw trims where they were needed, and at last, some successful brushing! 🥳 The Teezer brush got the win… but I think it was only successful because they managed to redirect their feelings of overstimulation from the brush (which was previously any brush-to-kitten contact at all; they were also not at all interested in getting to know and love the brush in a more intentional face-first brush-your-face way, and only wanted to fight or bite it) into grooming the other one! Yet another benefit of having two cats/kittens 😸 When they had somewhere else to direct their attention and something else to do, they were less single-minded about fighting with the brush/seeing it as a toy! Watching this, I do realise I haven’t cracked the treats-as-rewards for behaviour thing (in the operant conditioning model… my psychology degree from 16 years ago finally has a purpose 😹) - the treats I have are chicken lick-e-lix yoghurty sachets, which I’ve so far deployed as rewards for claw trims, for successfully hunting a fly, and for letting me clean eyes/nose, but that hasn’t been as immediate as a clicker or individual Dreamies treats (or similar - brand may be blurred!😸)… plus they become VERY alert when the lickable treat is nearby, and have both trampled on the other cat and accidentally sunk their kitten-teeth into my finger as I’ve been delivering the tasty treat (I now deploy the lickable treats onto a plate instead of attempting to hold the sachet in in my fragile little ape-hand!) - none of which are conducive to that chilled out mood of allowing brushing! Luckily they’re both responsive to my flow of gentle soothing verbal praise and encouragement for this kind of thing in their mostly-sleepy state; escalated to extremely syrupy extra-impressed reward-tones (and chin and head strokes) during brushing, at least so far 😅 Growing up I had two very long-haired Himalayan-cross breed cats (beautifully doll-faced instead of squish-faced… I now remember the term of endearment I had for for one of them - Squishyface - was completely un-grounded in reality or relevance! 😂), and they both had very dense but very fine long hair, and ultimately lots of matts (they were inside-outside cats in a semi-rural area, and would end up with half a field or hedgerow stuck to their fur in no time at all). It was a miserable time for everyone, but I got very good at comforting/restraining/gently brushing or combing/ultimately trimming out serious matts with sharp scissors (though I’m very relieved that 20+ years later there are better tools available!)… but it did ultimately need two pairs of hands for the biggest baby of the pair, who also got into the most dire fur-situations and needed most help. I at least don’t have the same environmental risks of having fields or hedgerows implanted into my cats’ fur (living in an apartment in London!), so I feel like my I’m very familiar with the “you may brush my face (and I love it), but only my face” attitude 😁 and was very confused by my kittens’ initial reaction to fight and reject the whole thing entirely! It’s a work in progress :)

I do the brushing very slowly as the metal brush can be not very gentle on their skin. Does it make sense to you, guys? She’s been with us since she was a tiny one. We always tried to mix brush time with something pleasant but every year is worse. Mid-May she is so matted that we need to get her the “lion cut”. Now at 8 years old the pet groomer we use won’t shave her anymore. She doesn’t attack (she’s never scratched anyone) but she’s so terrified hissing and moving that the groomer said we have to find someone to sedate her or she may get accidentally cut. She’s gorgeous and knot free until May. We try new ideas every year and it just makes her hiss and hide…. Any suggestions???

  • This is really good advice. I showed this to a friend and she said it helped her with her Turkish angora very much. Speaking of which, I've been wanting to adopt a cat and my mum agrees, on one condition: - The cat is not allowed in the house. Why? She says cats pee and poo everywhere and can't be litter trained, they have a tendency to attack, they shed a lot of fur, and they require a lot of care. She also said that cats are independent anyway so there isn't a need to keep them indoors. I want to convince her that the cat has to be in the house even though outdoor cats are a thing ( I hate people who keep cats outdoors, they are living things and they need your love, keeping an outdoor cat is like leaving your siblings or children to free roam outdoors. ), because outdoors cats are more likely to die from car accidents or contract a disease. I also want to let her know that cats can be litter trained and that with the right education, they will not attack their owners. Most importantly, she needs to know that cats aren't independent and a lack of interaction with their owners may lead to behavioural issues. I tried telling her but she wouldn't listen. If anyone has any ideas pls share it with me. If she still won't listen then I won't adopt one ( I actually want to adopt two or three so they can keep each other company while I'm at school ) . Edit: Does the Cornish Rex, Laperm and lykoi need brushing ?

  • ( protracted fits of giggling) “ I used to have dreadlocks back in the day...” Yo, NO WAY! Never would have guessed!

    • If you haven't read Jackson's memoir, _Cat Daddy,_ I recommend it highly: in this book, Jackson describes his former dreadlock coiffure, including a hilarious scene in which he cut off his trade-bead-bedecked dreads and threw them at an obnoxious neighbor. Of course, there's a lot more to _Cat Daddy_ than that, and Jackson writes honestly and unsparingly when he's not telling amusing stories on himself.

    • @@semperfi818 I was mostly dorking around and implying the giggling fit seemed, uh, herbally enhanced? But thanks for the recommendation.

    • @@kellyalves756 Yes, it seemed like Jackson had been getting into the catnip, as it were...but his books are worth reading, and _Cat Daddy_ is a worthwhile memoir (that addresses sobriety, interestingly, among other subjects).

  • My 5 year old always watches your videos with me (he got his first cat Rocket a few months ago). You got some serious bonus points with the Dr. Suess like rhymes and going all green eggs and ham on us.🤣♥️ Thank you for bringing smiles to our faces and putting out all these valuable videos.

  • I love cats. Trying to adopt one from my local humane society and just got pre-approved. All my favorite friends got adopted :`|

  • When we can get the brush out, our cat runs toward us and just flips on the floor like “I’m ready!”

    • Mine too! I just run my fingers thru his brush (from any area of my studio) & he comes running 💙. He especially likes to offer his hind quarters. I'm delighted that this makes him deliriously happy 😻

  • Thank you for reminding me to try brushing Sophie when she is relaxing on my lap. She is very shy and usually runs the other way when she sees a brush.

  • Thank you, Mr. Galaxy. This is very helpful. My semi-feral floof has tamed down enough for me to gingerly brush him. Your advice about treats to reward a brushing session is a revelation for me. I was being too generous with the treats. Now my floof earns them.
