Norway's Muslim immigrants attend classes on western attitudes to women

2016 ж. 31 Шіл.

Every immigrant in Norway must attend classes on female rights and respect for women. The lessons were made compulsory after a string of sex attacks by immigrants in the western city of Stavanger.

With exclusive access to a class in action in the town of Moi, 65 miles south-east of Stavanger, Jenny Kleeman meets the students and asks whether western values can really be taught in a classroom.

  • " they don't understand our culture" Why should Norwegians understand Muslim culture? It's Muslims that have come to Norway. Not visa versa.

It is good to know about East Asian culture, Russian culture, Latin American culture, African culture, Middle Eastern culture, etc...More knowledge about each other will create a better mutual understanding between all peoples of the world and prevent stereotypes and hatred.

In my home state in India, I see foreigners I mean mostly europeans came here to study or experience the culture and sometimes they even contribute more than the local ones. Any one from europe, North and South america, russia, china, and east asia, I have been in contact with, saw a great respect for my language, culture. But I see none from the people's of middle east and most arabic countires. They just don't want to respect other peoples's culture. They want to impose their own. That's why if you ask any indian, they will say in favour of any european, russian, or any american or even a chinese one. But not for the middle eastern ones.

    • I think maybe it was slightly lost in translation - english as a second language is a challenge after all - I think the point he was trying to make is perhaps "fixing houses" is such hard physical work that a woman who does this as a career might have regrets lol (I know I would!)

      @user-dq2ym1nn9k@user-dq2ym1nn9k5 жыл бұрын
    • What he said was not so insane. As J says it was slightly lost in translation, but what he was getting at is that despite the now overwhelming rejection in the west that there are intrinsic differences between men and women, the proportion of men working in construction or proportion of women working in kindergartens suggests otherwise. Of course, this is often disregarded as a result of long standing social factors, but that to me seems unlikely. What was not so reasonable was his over generalisation. Obviously it's not the case that "women can't fix houses", it's just that MOST men naturally tend to take an interest in more mechanics based careers.

      @omminnoremac@omminnoremac4 жыл бұрын
    • @@omminnoremac You speak as if all gender roles and social masculine/feminine conditioning has disappeared from the west. I don't think that's the case. I think it just looks that way to a lot of people, maybe because they view the world through the lens of the past, so they compare today's world with how things used to be, and say things like "The world believes in androgyny now" or "The whites are under attack." Even if it's true that men and women are inherently different, why does it matter so much? You can still do whatever you want with your life. And that would basically be my message. Not "Women are like this and men are like this." But rather "Stay true to yourself. Follow your dreams. You do you boo. You can do whatever you want."

    • @@ammonia309 no this issues is pretty rife in all religions, it's bad epistomology and this is what is causes. Anyone who is religious will pull out this trump card anytime they want to shut down someone suggesting a better way that has empirical evidence. We are only now finally tackling this anti-intelectualism in western countries and religiosity is dying. Many countries are ahead of the curve on this one, with better separation of "beliefs' and state decisions. While still maintaining personal beliefs with some self awareness mixed in. I don't think I mentioned a single person in my comment. The incompatibility of equitable society and religion/tradition is a no brainier. Religions teach knowledge comes from authority rather than sound evidence. This sets people up to be gullible and easily misinformed. Or they have no vetting for what information they let in. The end result is the same. Religions/traditions excuse actions without material or humanist justification. It lends this skill to theists as a catch all as well. They just can't get away with it as much anymore as the secular morality of societies marches towards progress that can point to an actual objective based moral system and not just one that is whatever someone wants to interpret, believe. People can be who they want without being harassed for arbitrary characteristics that don't effect others.

They don't need see this. They simply see a rich country vs a poor one and they think the culture within is not correlated to the culture. This is a fundamental problem obviously. If they do not wish to assimilate to western culture norms then they are insisting on constantly being at odds with the very foundation of the societies they are living in. They teach their children to be the way they are and it divides the community from their host country and assimilation is incredibly slow or never happens.

  • I’m an Asian American who was born to immigrants. And honestly I think it’s all about balance. Learn the language and culture of the host country to adapt. However, it doesn’t mean you should throw away your previous culture either. I feel like you can continue your previous cultural practices as long as it doesn’t cause harm to the citizens of the host country. So you can eat, sing, and dance differently from the host country. Your home itself can represent your heritage, being filled with objects and traditions that remind you of home. However, when you are interacting with citizens of the host country, you should act accordingly with the manners of that country. Edit: Oh wow thank you everyone for the likes! Edit 2: and for those asking in the replies, I do condemn the treatment of women as objects. As a woman, I am especially disgusted since these men in the video seem to be using “culture” as an excuse. As mentioned above, you can do anything from your culture as long it does not harm anyone.

    • Frankly, it's a scathing argument in favor of a comprehensive moratorium on any and all opportunistic immigration/asylum until such a time as all existing immigrants/refugees have been empirically proven to have been fully assimilated into the local culture. Standard safety procedure during an incident is to freeze the situation, identify the issue, isolate the issue, then solve the issue before continuing. If these people are to be helped it must be in their respective home countries or as close there to as possible.

Having to cover yourself completely with only the eyes showing the majority of time is absolutely ridiculous. I think all the males should practice the same expectations they put on the females. • @@kagomehigurashi2345 it's sad but it's the unfortunate truth that years of faulty conditioning as well as social structure has ingrained in people's minds that women are 2nd class citizens who can't enjoy doing all what a man can. We have taught our girls to be obedient, docile and dutiful (even to the most horrible men out there) but have not taught our boys enough on how to treat women right. We are just raising women as rehab centres/ punching bags for men. Our previous generations can't even acknowledge issues like Marital rapes, consent *along* with free will etc, seriously. Hopefully we and our next generations can address all the problems and bridge the gaps existing in moral values and ethics. It's really appalling that even in today's time, some men and even some women think it's OK for men to do things as "boys will be boys" and ladies should be behind doors of their houses and only in kitchens. 😡😓

Of those countries only 7 had African colonies, arguably 8 if you include the Dutch settlements in southern Africa but these were established independently from the Dutch government. We had nothing to do with the colonial empires of Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany (who's colonial empire lasted less than 30 years) and Italy but you expect us in countries like Ireland, Norway, Poland etc to somehow feel responsible for their histories.
