0:10 - Intro
0:17 - Why he played a 4-4-2 at Burnley
1:33 - Out of possession: "Keep them one side"
4:50 - Shuffle and slide
6:39 - Protecting the key scoring zone
8:59 - In possession: changing the tempo
10:46 - Building play
14:42 - 4-4-1-1 variation
16:47 - Giving the players the tools to succeed
In the second of two exclusive Coaches’ Voice Masterclasses, Sean Dyche gives a fascinating insight into his use of the 4-4-2 formation during his time as manager of Burnley.
In an in-depth session, Dyche examines both the in-possession and out-of-possession tactics he refined in a 10-year spell that saw the northwest club spend six consecutive seasons competing in the Premier League. In that time, they finished as high as seventh in the table and qualified for European football.
He goes on to discuss the tweaks he made to the set-up, including employing a defensively-aware number 10 in a 4-4-1-1 shape, as well as his approach to developing players, such as Kieran Trippier and Danny Ings, within that system.

  • The guy finished 7th in the Premier league with us (Burnley). This is the equivalent of finishing second in a Grand Prix to Lewis Hamilton in a Fiat Punto. The guy is class. He will do well at Everton.

    • Unfortunately (and sincerely I mean this as a Liverpool fan), it's not really about the calibre of the manager at Everton, which has been proven over and over again. Dyche is to be admired. Obviously a very shrewd chap with, what I've seen of it over the latest interviews a lot of class.

Kompany is playing Pep ball and they are favourites for promotion now and Dyche still got relegated eventually last season just like teams who play different styles to him. • Sean Dyche did an amazing job at my club Burnley...The best manager in my 51 years supporting the Clarets. winning the Championship on the back of a 23 games unbeaten run...Marching us into Europe is certainly one thing that i never ever expected see in my lifetime...and for a few seasons actually competing in the EPL....BUT....we then unfortunately became predictable thus becoming very easy to beat and that,s when the football became awful to watch...Sadly it seems that the tactical & technical development of Sean Dyche didn,t happen and that is where things started to go badly wrong... He will always have a warm welcome at Turf Moor and i wish him well for the future...Thank you Sean...You are a Clarets Legend.

  • Sean Dyche is litterally the twin (baldy & more exhuberant) brother of Eddie Howe and is the absolute BEST appointment Everton could hope for...Dude did absolutely miracles for YEARS with virtually no money and signign mostly british players and end up in Europe and keeping them on The Prem for YEARS ! That alone is an incredible achievement in itself and deserves all the praise in the world. Like Howe, he is likable, knowledgeable and down to earth and easy going. Everton already tried world class managers like Ancelotti and Benitez and how did it work for them ? Dyche like Howe in Newcastle is gonna surprise and amaze many footy fans worldwide with his ability to get the absolute best out of any player he is coaching and making them looking far better than t what they are. Just ask the likes of Michael Keane, Tarkowski & McNeill and you will found how they rate and value Mr Dyche as a coach and most importantly, a GREAT Human Being.

Not just to hear that voice, but I want him to get a chance to perhaps break out of the stereotype people built around him. There are clubs who would massively benefit from the Burnley approach, defensively solid and try to create in transition, but listening to his interviews, how he dissects the game its clear he has so much more to him. His job at Burnley is criminally underrated for the stress Dyche was under with money limitations, and he deserves another chance at the top level.

His record speaks for itself and only failed at Burnley because he wasn’t backed by the former and current board of directors over the last 3 years. He probably took us as far as he could on the resources he had at his disposal. I think he would do well at Everton and get the best out of those players. However don’t be expecting attacking players to play attacking football because it’s not going to happen so often. It will sure up the defensive for this season and should just about keep Everton in the premier league with something to build on. As always I will wish Sean Dyche the best wherever he goes. UTC!!

    • *The Championship* is the right tier for the Burnley organisation, they can moneyball themselves a squad who are great performers at that level of competition, and the right coach-read Vincent Kompany-can have them playing very watchable (and very winning) football. When they win promotion at the end of this season, they shouldn't waste their money on a total rebuild-bank the television money, get relegated, bank the parachute payment, dominate the Championship, get promoted, and repeat. All the stress in yo-yoing is the cycle of splashing out for top flight talent, then selling off and putting together a squad you can afford in the Championship. Just spend enough to dominate the Championship and enjoy the cycle of alternating between Premier League money and parachute payments.

  • The way he talks and explains things is great you'd really leave it all on the pitch for him. Also Sean would love to play more expansive football but you use the tools you have.

  • There’s beauty in the simplicity which he speaks about; it’s a system which players can easily understand. You can see the Clough influence straight away 😅

  • It's a clearly defined approach.. after 9 mins watching this I know exactly what he wants from me defensively in the position I used to play. If the players all know their jobs (with and without the ball) and all put in the effort required and work hard, then you've always got a chance. He'll keep Everton up i reckon.

  • As a Southampton fan I wanted Sean Dyche to come to our club because he was experienced, pragmatic, intelligent, logical, calm and passionate. I also wanted to play 4-4-2 which has worked for us recently against Man City and Palace and worked occasionally before that until mangers went back to tinkering. The appointment and his philosophy would have steadied the players individually , the team as a whole, supporters worries and helped the club stay in the Premier League. Sean has a faith in 4-4-2, will alter it if necessary, but knows that it is fundamental to a steady, effective team. Our previous four managers have all tinkered around with multiple formations and, hence, players - and this will never work, especially with players that aren't the best in the Premier. The previous managers had no fundamentally sound philosophy and so, I feel. it was inevitable that they would fail in the short to medium term. I also feel it is so important for players to understand their role and the players to understand each others' role. Dyche believes in utilising players to the best of their individual abilities (which is logical) whereas less successful or effective managers will just dictate that a players follows the manager's format for a particular game. Again here a manager is restricting the player's talent, ability and hence the effectiveness of the team whilst confusing the player and the team. Good luck to Dychey at Everton and to Everton - I think they both made sound choices. I really can't see Everton going down now - Dychey will rebuild the team into a formidable unit.

  • this tactic would be unstoppable in high school if our coach, who played 4-4-2 all the time, understood anything about pressing.

  • SD just opened up my eyes on the defensive tactics and it is just brilliant.I used to think(in my naiive state) that 442 defensive set up deployed by mid table PL team are simple and easy but the amount of intelligence, effort and awareness involved in it is second to none.Offensive or defensive, unless your particular set up is not implemented 100%,you lose.Wonderful from Sean Dyche,he is my favorite english manager from now.
