As an occupational therapist, I’ve worked with and learned from a lot of Stroke survivors. Unfortunately, I’ve also seen too many survivors go home without the therapy or resources they need for recovery. Here’s what I wish I could tell every stroke survivor.

  • Balancing on one leg (any leg) is the simplest way to invoke, or switch on, neuro-plasticity. When the brain senses that we are at "risk" it counters that risk by switching on the ability to learn quickly. It is a survival trait. Balancing is an essential skill which we need to survive, so, balancing (and wobbling) on one leg will do it every time. The more we "wobble" the more we learn. If we don't wobble and go out of our comfort zone we don't learn anything, apart from learning not to use our affected limb/s. Failure is good because it tells the brain yet another way that things don't succeed.

    @user-eh9li5tx7h@user-eh9li5tx7h2 ай бұрын
    • @user-eh9li5tx7h Experiencing some level of "failure", in this case the wobble, is good! The only thing I'd say is make sure that if you are pushing yourself to this point, make sure to have someone else with you or are set up in an environment that you can safely do this on your own. Safety first! ❤️

  • Another fantastic video. I wish I’d been able to see this when I had my stroke three years ago. One of the best pieces of advice I’ve gotten is in one of your videos. You said that we’re looking for better. I started back to OT yesterday and they asked me what my goals were and I said improvement. I don’t want to set unrealistic goals for what may or may not happen. I want to see any improvement and be grateful for that. Today is my three year a Strokeaversary!! Some people don’t like to talk about their stroke, but I talk about it, and celebrate it. I have been healed as much mentally as I’ve been healed physically and I am so grateful to God for that. Your play a really big role in my recovery, and I thank you.

  • I've had a serious mental health decline since 2022. The worst part of this is that everyone that at one point cared for me watched it happen in real time and did absolutely nothing to help me. I continue to advocate for myself as I am on my own here. The health care system still doesn't prioritize any of us dealing with neurofatigue and are post-stroke, so even battling to get refills can be a challenge. At the end of the day, I am grateful to be alive every single day, despite the loneliness and the daily challenges. I truly believe that if we survived these life changing strokes, We have a reason and purpose to be alive today. Thank you for this reminder. We all truly need it.

    • @DJAUDIO1 Alex, the world absolutely needs you. You bring so much joy through your work. Unfortunately, you are right that the U.S. healthcare system does not prioritize continued recovery. As you well know, it's often a few weeks of therapy (if that) and then good luck to try and figure the rest out on your own. Thankful for the community of survivors and professionals who build each other up ❤️

I was referred to physical therapy but I suffer from agoraphobia (even before the stroke) so I haven’t been able to go to PT. My physical therapist gave me exercises to do at home. All things considered I think I am doing well in my recovery. Thank you for reminding me that every person is different and my recovery might not look like someone else’s

Do you have anywhere around you that offers teletherapy, that way you wouldn’t have to leave your house but you could still get therapy? ❤️

  • Six months in, looking forward is tedious and taxing, looking behind my stroke was a joke. The only thing that kinda freaked me out was reading survivors has one percent survival making it twenty years. Then I did the math and in the US that's 330, 000. I'll take those odds. Only tip fight off all the bad habits that you had before the stroke after some time has past. Save your strength for recovery. 😊

  • After having 2 strokes on December 12 of last year, I'll make a full recovery without any injuries.. I learned a lot from this situation. Several of the people that I work with called to check on me, nothing at home but, it's my fault, being lazy, etc. to my job that seems to not want me around anymore either even though I've been released by the neurosurgeon in all doctors March 3rd this year. This is a horrible way to treat someone who wants to talk or be around others. My support group is my 3 dogs at home and friends at work. Go figure... One thing as a side note, my mind works well and I remember how and what those that around me treated me as.

  • I’m 2 years into my stroke. Elyse is my go to when I’m in need exercise or advice. I now understand my recovery is baby steps not big steps. I had a hard time excepting my slow progress. But I’ve gone from the bed for 3 months use of sarasteady to standing balancing and short time use of a cane in 2 years. That’s using my wonderful husband to assist in therapy pool, gym, home with Elyse. I’m motivated and still have to work on arm hand spasticity. Thank you Elyse for all of your workout videos and post stroke explanations.

  • I am 3 years and 7 months out from my stroke.I had mine on the left side,arm and leg.Also have drop foot and have brace and use a cane.After my stroke stay in the hospital for 5 days,went across the street to the rehabilitation/ hospital for 3 weeks and then 3 other out patient rehabilitations and I can walk but knee does not want to bend just a little.I bought a glove from saebo the blue one and have a split for my hand.I have spasticity.I started working out for 7 days a week for 3 months,was told to much,then 6 days a week 2 times a day.Was told that is still to much by the therapists again and they said ok to work out 5 days a week,which I have done for 3 plus years.My stay in rehabilitation was for 2 years and go back once a year for tune ups which my therapist call it for a month for PT and ot.I do a total of 30 different exercises for PT and it at home I was given.I just got completely past burned out working out and besides stretching I do every day,I took off 5 months because my body it seems has peaked and I just gotten sad that my body just has slowed down.I am trying to get motivated to start again.Had my stroke at 57 I am male white and just turned 61 Wed.Al little FYi,I heard about this drug called MPH 220 for spasticity,they started clinical trails in 2021 phase 1 and had phase 2 I believe in 2022.I looked it up again yesterday and there is no update on phase 3,from what I understand,the FDA needs 3 clinical trails and had positive results in all 3 to be considered to be approved for distribution to the public and insurance to cover them.They said you take 1 pill a day to heal spasticity.There is also an episode on 60 minutes about a shot that is given in the back of your neck bottom of head.Intercept shot that cures some stroke patients completely.They interviewed 2 stroke patients one it healed completely and the other helped.They have had about 700 to 800 patients get the shot.It cost 6K out of pocket,has not been FDA approved yet.You can look it up online on tube,is on Facebook.The doctors office is in Boco Raton, Florida.

  • I just recently found this KZhead channel and have watched a couple of videos. I had a small stroke almost two years ago at the age of 33. My recovery was good as I was able to be on short term disability for four months off of work. The biggest challenges that I'm experiencing are fatigue, anxiety and depression. I'm wondering if this anxiety and depression has been triggered more due to being forced to move out of the rental property and losing my job a year and a half after my stroke. I also have a young family with a wife and three children. In some ways it feels that my stroke journey is a bit unique as the doctors found white spots on my brain from my MRI. My stroke doctor couldn't explain what those white spots were. So he referred me to the MS specialist. At the MS specialist appointment, they did a few tests to see if I had any symptoms of MS which I didn't have any at that appointment. So the MS specialist said we would monitor the white spots with another MRI. I had another MS specialist appointment earlier this year to discuss the MRI results which indicate that the white spots are still there but haven't increased in number or size. I've been wondering as to why did I have a stroke in the first place as I hardly drink and smoke and don't have high cholesterol. The MS specialist was awesome as now I will be doing more testing in the next few months and hopefully have some answers. Also, I find it hard to talk to others about my stroke journey who haven't experienced a stroke. Any advice would be great

    • It sounds like your journey has been complicated. Mental health changes can happen because of the area of the brain that was affected or because of the after effects. Having a stroke is traumatic and can significantly change your life. Have you been able to access counseling or mental health therapy to help you cope?

      @PostStrokeOrg@PostStrokeOrg2 ай бұрын
    • @@PostStrokeOrg Thank you. I've just started to access therapy for my mental health. Although I was on antidepressants before my stroke. I'm wondering if those antidepressants might have been a factor in causing my stroke. Again any advice or information would be helpful.

    • @kittimoore9034 Thank you for your comment. I'm sorry to hear about your recent stroke and vision loss. It depends on the type of vision loss. Some visual field cuts (like homonymous hemianopsia) may or may not get better. I'd recommend reaching out to your neurologist or a neuro eye specialist to get a better understanding of the type of vision loss you have and what they anticipate as far as recovery of your vision ❤️
