The Sculpfun S9 is a brand new high end laser engraver that was just released! It is so capable that we should call it a proper laser cutter. Its special feature is that it can cut thick materials with ease thanks to its special optics. @@ARSHADPATHAN-ym4je what kind of material?
Aluminium or stainless steel
I love the steel "waste" plate! The idea of holding the materials like paper and leather down with just a few high-power magnets, very cool!
Thanks! Its cheap and it works!
I've got an S6 and while I absolutely love it, I find the horizontal cut to be significantly wider than the vertical. Im considering buying the S9 module. Looks significantly better
Amazing review! Thank you very much for your good work!
Thank you so much for choosing Sculpfun!!!🥰
Thank you very much for the information, was really helpful.
excellent laser that cuts even thick materials, thanks to the narrow focal point, certainly the best for value for money
Best Ideas for Use of Laser Cutting Machines !!
Thanks for sharing all of these very accurate tests. I'm trying to start with a decent price-quality device. The grayscale test says a lot about how good this equipment is compared to other devices. Does the roller system for cans or glasses fit on this tool?
The Sculpfun is the best for engraving. Very fine spot and great details. There will soon be a roller system from Sculpfun. But I think Atomstack one should also work.
Tip, if you poly, or poly stain your wood first, then laser etch and cut, you are able to remove the burn halos using alcohol and a cloth... It's also easier to brush poly the entire wood before it's cut or etched. Then you can still use the spray after the cleanup for a final coat...
That sounds like a good tip. Do you have a recomendation for the type of poly to use? I've just ordered the S9 and really looking forward to start using it.
@@tlwestre any poly will do...
Sorry guys, but what is "poly"?
@@asa100 polyurethane coating, like a finisher
I’d recommend water based Polyurethane (Ie: polycrilic) because it doesn’t yellow like oil based. Just make sure you stir and don’t shake because you will introduce a ton of micro bubbles in the finish. I also don’t like foam brushes for the same reason.
Hello. I was looking for information on the Internet on the Sculpfun S9 laser. You did very good materials that helped me choose to buy Sculpfun S9. Thank you very much. Greetings from Poland. Arthur
You don't need spraypaint to engrave into Stainless Steel, but it does help sometimes. I've found certain stainless engraves really well without paint, while others don't- I think thickness and exact composition of the metal is what makes the difference.
Hello I wanted to ask what software program you use and with what settings you cut acrylic because it doesn't work for me. Thank you!
Great work JT !
Some awesome ideas here, i'll definitely be taking some inspiration!
Two questions. First, can you or do you post your test file. Yours is the best I have seen. Second, I see that the laser is expandable if you buy extended aluminum rails. But, what belts does it take and where could you get them? I would assume you would need new belts to make it bigger. Thanks!
I have made a form so everyone could download the test file here: hobbylasercutters.com/download-test-files/ As for the extension I have just asked the manufacturer how this works and where to get parts and I will let you know soon.
I have asked the manufacturer and they said they will soon be selling the extension components for this machine
What's the best balsa wood size ( thickness ) for making small n scale buildings with?
Absolutely brilliant machine and I love the boxes, can you tell me if you could engrave on clear acrylic with this machine?
You can, but you need to paint the surface black to make it work. But you can use watercolors which can be removed easily after engraving.
Outstanding info. tutorial!! I’ve been looking into an engraver for quite some time. I’m just having a hard time choosing between a laser vs “spindle”. I need some flexibility as well as ability to engrave on metal.. TY for the great input!
You're welcome!
Great examples of projects! Do you share the lightburn design files for these? I only found the test file on the blog post. I was wondering about speeds and settings for engraving and cutting the tear-off ticket project
Hi, on my website I have an article with more descriptions next to each project found in this video. For some designs I also posted the vector files. I didn't attach lightburn files for everything, because you need to adjust all the settings according to the material you use. But if you really want the lightburn file for the ticket, send me an email and I will sent it to you. I think everyrhing was done with 600mm/min. 100% power for cutting (1 pass) and about 40% power for text and photo engraving. Perforation was done by enabling perforation mode for one layer in Lightburn
Sir your video very good..very happy when watch your video. If have questions can I ask you sir s9?

Great job again 👍🏼
Thanks for watching! You are awesome!
Hello, JT! Your videos are very good, your approach on this subject is great, I was in doubt which laser to buy, but my doubt was solved, I'm going to buy the Sculpfun S9, I'm a hobbyist. Keep producing good videos, you gained another subscriber on your channel! Please, JT, what are the measurements of these magnets you use? Stay tuned! Thanks!!!
Thanks you are awesome! I mostly use 3mm thick round neodymium magnets with 20mm diameter. These are strong enough for straightening the bent 3mm plywood. But I also have some smaller 10mm round and 2mm tall ones which are good for thinner stuff like paper
Have you tried cutting clear acrylics? Or the colored transparent ones?
Great review, and one of the few I can find. Do you recommend this laser over the Ortur Master 2 Pro?
If you want more cutting power then choose S9. Ortur has better mechanics, but weaker laser.
Thanks for the video! Did you cut plywood in jsut one pass? What speed (mm/s)?
No I used multiple passes at 600mm/min. You can see how this machine performs for cutting here: hobbylasercutters.com/sculpfun-s9/
Hi everyone, I have an Anycubic mega S, I'd like to buy, install and use the laser engraving. Is it that possible? Is it enough and possible to replace the firmware with the mega pro and is it available to download? Thanks.
Hey, great content. What is the cutting surface material that you use ? I can´t quite tell. Is it just a steel plate ?
Thanks! Its a regular 2mm thick mild steel plate
very nice video, keep up the good work :)
Very informative and helpful video. The following questions from a technical point of view: 1) is the Laser Module 90w replaceable if it is defective? if so, where do you get these laser modules? 2) can you also operate a 60w laser module with an S9? or is the electronics (CNC control board) designed accordingly? maybe this question has already been asked in this chat ... 3) same question as 1) for the CNC control board? Thank you for your effort and a lot of work
Hi, the module is easily replacable and upgradable. It takes a less than a minute to remove the head. The s6 and s9 heads are interchangable and so are the driver boards. Mechanically the are also the same. The replacement/upgrade heads will probably be listed on banggood. But the life span of the head should be very long.
@@JTMakesIt Super cool and thanks for the quick reply! i will order this device with your proposed coupon and i will be very happy to use your advice! I discovered that one side can be extended. do you maybe also know how big this is offered? I am happy to watch your well-structured and well-thought-out lectures again and again. Likewise, I plan the housing like you did in the other video's. Do you have may be plans or a list of components for this? It's just a lot of fun to be here !!
@@gdinternationalpmjr3338 Thank you for watching! It is a pleasure working long hours and producing videos that people like you excited and happy :) I do not know about the extension, but on their site they say that that aluminum profile is standard and I guess you can extend it as long as you like. You would just need to purchase longer belts and cabling would also need to be extended. Maybe they will sell extension kit in the future. But this laser as it is is still very big. As for the ventilation box, I do not have plans and component lists because I built it from the parts I had at hand. I think it is not the best design, but its the best for the materials I had available :) In some of the first videos with laser box I have a link in the description where you can find some more photos with some basic dimensions. Thanks for being awesome and enjoying my videos :)
Hi, Some update! Now you can get replacement laser head for S9 here: hobbylasercutters.com/go/sculpfun-s9-head/ They also have replacement head for S6 and S6 Pro. The heads fit on most laser machines - Atomstack, Ortur, Eleksmaker...
@@JTMakesIt Thank you for your great info and for thinking of me! I will definitely buy this set including the whole machine. I started planning the electronic controls for the fans and sensor detectors for the housing. It will probably be a few more days until the real thing from Sculpfun S9 is there!
Hello, thank you for your video. Could you tell me how long it took to cut the bottom of the clock (3) and in how many passes. Thank you for your answer
Thanks for watching! I don't remember exactly, but 600mm/min and 6 passes took 45min approximately. It would cut it in way less passes but I always set more passes just to be sure. There is always a stubborn patch of glue somewhere in this wood.
Hola, Excelente Video!!! Disculpa puedo poner el Modulo Sculpfun S9 en una Ortur Master 2. Gracias
If your machine is powered by 12V (regular Ortur laser Master 2) it could work. But I am not 100% sure because I don't have that machine. For Ortur laser master 2 Pro it will not work because the machine is 24V.
I followed the link to the plans for the Flex Box with living hinge & round corners. I don't think the plan at that link is the one you made in the video. I would really like to make your #2 project.
Hey! First, thanks for the amazing video! Second, what SW do you use with your laser engraver? I use LaserRGBL, but it seems a bit limited...

@@invictus7882 There is a link in the video description
Sehr gut Herr T.
Hey That's a great video and very helpful but I have a question What is that black sheet under the machine ? And where can I buy them ?
That is a regular 2mm thick mild steel plate I ordered at a local metalworking shop. It is great because you can fix things with magnets. But with the machine you get a small steel plate as well which is good for a start.
@@JTMakesIt thank you so much ♥

Awesome thanks!
Thank you for your review on the product. I am looking for a laser cutting machine that cuts 2mm thick royal board thick paper with having the paper burnt while laser cutting it in close. i need to cut 2~10 mm thick acrylics for my architectural scale models. is there it for me?
It should br able to cut 2mm paper. The only problem I see is in acrylic. It depends on what color it is. Black acrylic is the easierst to cut but 10mm thick is the very maximum for all machines and they will cut it very slowly. None of the machines will be able to cut transparent acrylic, for it you would need a different kind of laser
Love the vid how can it cut 10mm mdf? If so how many passes you think I'll neeed?
Thanks for watching! I have never tried cutting MDF, so I can't say it, but the 10mm is about the practical maximum for softer woods. For 10mm Poplar plywood it takes around 20-25 passes at 600mm/min. I think it would need quite a lot of passes. You can go slower and use much less passes, but there would be more charring. For fast cutting of thick boards, you would need much more expensive machine.
Could you show us how good the sculpfun s9 is at cutting gaskets in different thickness gasket material?
I could try, but gasket material is very different for each application.
Great video man!!! Can you tell me what specs did you use cutting the leather? I mean the speed, power and passes. Thanks!
Thanks! Check the video description for an article on my website. You will find all information there including the Lightburn files
Hi JT, I am considering buying this. Can I also make rubber templates with this sculpfun S9 that I can use to apply structures, mandalas, etc. in clay?
Yes you can
I wanted to know the lasers watts on it? please cause cause I've seen all the links and comparing prices then I see a link that its about upgrading the laser ?..is it 90w or not ...?
Check my latest video, I was measuring optical power of all my laser engravers
What is the acrylic ran that can be cut in the machine knowing that I have 2 mm white acrylic but it has not been cut. I don't know why I hope you help me. Thank you
White and transparent acrylic can't be cut with diode lasers
Will the S9 module work as a replacement for the Atomstack A5 20w which only has 4.5 optical power? Even though the 4.5 optical power is great for detail it takes several passes to cut leaving my edges way too charred.
S9 module is an amazing upgrade to the A5 20w. The difference is like night and day!
Hi I am new to laser printing I am just wondering can I use any brand y axis rotary wheel with the sclupfun laser printer as I have seen the ortur ones and they make thier own rotary wheels So could I use a ortur rotary with sculpfun printer I think I can but just making sure
I am not sure about the Ortur one fitting to the Sculpfun. At least the Laser Master 2 Pro has 24V power supply instead of the 12V others use. But I haven't tried any rollers yet. I think the Atomstack one could work, but the Sculpfun will soon release their own roller, so I think it is the best to wait.
@@JTMakesIt ok thank you
Hello nice video do you cut mdf? how much deep you can cut? In this S9
Haven't tried mdf yet but I think 5mm should be no problem.
Will it be good mainly for imprinting stainless steel/metal bracelets? Do you recommend something else? Can you do on a round surface like cups?
Check out my last video. The machine I reviewed is just what you need
I really enjoyed your video..😁😁. but I have a question can you do a tutorial how correctly clean lens...I'm a little clumsy and I'm afraid I can use what I shouldn't or press something what I shouldn't too...😉
You can easily clean the lens with cotton swab (q-tip) dipped in isopropyl alcohol and gently wiping the lens with it. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates cleanly and does not leave marks. You will see how I clean the lens in my next video which comes out in a few days.
How does this laser compare to the Atomstack A5 pro plus? As far as I have read, both have the improved focusing and now the Atomstack has thumb screws to fix the laser head. How would you compare the two?
Hi, I haven't tested the Atomstack A5 pro plus, so I can't say which one is better. Whey should be somewhat similar. BubI don't like the Atomatack light ahield design because it does not allow you to lower the head more than optimal focus. It comes very handy to lower the head a few mm more than normal when cutting thicker materials.
What settings do you use for the denim engraving? (I have the same machine)
I don't remember the exact numbers, but I use the lowest possible power that gives you results, because you can quickly burn through. It should be around 30-40% power at around 1000-1500mm/min. The number should be a bit different for various kinds of denim.
Is this better than the s30 pro? Is this brand better than neje? I currently got my first laser and I got the neje 3plus but having trouble with it. Thinking of switching to another. Any recommendations?
This is the predecessor to the S30. It is half the power of the S30 pro. I like it way more than the Neje. If you want to compare different machines check my reviews: hobbylasercutters.com/laser-reviews/ or watch my other videos.
Thanks for all information dude 👍 I'm your subscriber now🤝😍

You adjust the height of the laser by moving the module physically up or down. By adjusting the height you set the height at which the laser will be in focus.

It depends on the type of wood. Here I was cutting a very soft and light wood. Harder and denser woods are much harder to cut and take much more power.
What kind of wood do you use for project number 10, and what is the best thickness for this project
3mm thick poplar plywood. Poplar is soft and cheap wood which cuts very well. You can use 4mm or 6mm for a more durable toy.

hello grat video, thanks! could you tell me the maximum speed of thjis laser? ortur master pro 2s can engrave phots at 10000mm/min with no problems cause it has a 32bit motherboard, can this laser do the same?
Max speed is 6000mm/min. But I am testing the laser master 2 pro right now and at 10000mm/min the laser does not have enough power to burn the material at 100%power. With both machines, the maximum usable speed is around 5000mm/min.
@@JTMakesIt are you going to be posting your review of the Ortur on your channel? I really appreciate your work because there are not many in depth reviews and tests of Sculpfun and atomstack machines but Ortur seems to be so popular that I really want to be able to compare them. I've already purchased the S9 based on your review though haha so mainly I'm hoping I didn't make a wrong decision by not going with the Ortur hahah
@@akaTelo I will be posting a review in about 2 weeks. Personally I think the S9 gets you more for the money because it has a stronger laser for about 100$ less.
@@JTMakesIt awesome! Yeah that was my thought as well from just reading the specifications for each laser. The Ortur is nice in that the x axis motor is shifted off the gantry to the side so less weight has to be slung around, I can see why that would allow it to go faster. But yeah the S9 laser is so good. The comparison I'd like to see for the laser next is the Neje dual laser module. Theoretically that should be even more performant than the S9, but it's also a pretty expensive module
@@akaTelo Ortur can move faster also because the laser diode has much smaller heatsink. But that should affect the longevity of the laser diode. And I hope to test the Neje one day as well :)

Hello, how many power, speed and pass should I put to cut PVC?
Full power and speed from 300-600mm/min
You show this cutting plywood in the beginning does it cut plywood, if so, how thick will it cut?
Useful range is up to 10mm thick for poplar plywood.
Do you suggest me to buy an algolaser one ?
Didn't test it so I don't know. But I have tested many laser engravers on my channel.
