How can just a snapshot tell us what is going to happen in billions of years or what really has already happened to be exact? It can’t and we will never know.

      @joan519@joan51914 күн бұрын
    • >joan519 : Those two redshift experiments were done in 1998... but why do you think it's relevant that it was long ago? Additional evidence collected since then hasn't undermined the validity of the 1998 data, and the 2011 Nobel Prize was awarded for it. You might want to skim the Wikipedia article on Dark Energy. It discusses the (non-imagined) evidence, as well as alternative explanations. Other, more recent kinds of evidence are also consistent with the theory of dark energy. Implicit in your reply is your acknowledgment that this kind of "imagination" isn't fantasy. Theorizing consistent with evidence is an essential step in the scientific process, and it can't be skipped. It's part of how progress toward understanding is made. Subsequent steps are deducing consequences (predictions) assuming the theory is correct, attempting to disprove it by finding an inconsistency with other evidence, and attempting to disprove it experimentally by showing a prediction is wrong.

      @brothermine2292@brothermine229213 күн бұрын
    • Agreed. No one knows what dark matter is or if even exists. Someone came up with what seems like a darn good theory, and when another person realized the observations didn't match the theory, they came up with a complicated fudge factor or kludge to explain the deviation. Occam's Razor suggests that it is more likely that either someone made a math error, missed something, or that the theory isn't fully baked yet, but instead of going back to the drawing board, they came up with a fugazi to salvage the theory.

    • It's been called dark energy precisely because we *don't* know exactly what it is. The measured increasing expansion rate of the universe implies an actively energetic source according to the laws of thermodynamics, hence "dark energy" because there's energy that is as yet unknown to current physics which is a very exciting mystery to be solved. If the expansion rate were consistent (or even slowing) then that would be sufficient cause to believe that it was remnants of that rapid inflationary period, but the fact that it's *increasing* means there must be additional energy to identify that is currently beyond our ability to directly observe. People can be aware of a force without being able to explain the fundamental cause of it (such as gravity). We know gravity exists and can predict behaviors in incredible detail but physics has yet to identify specific particles/waves that *cause* gravity. Similarly, dark energy has observable effects (expansion and rate of increase) but the fundamental particles responsible are not yet known. So it's "dark" until it has had some light shed upon it.

    • @@Hashpipe36You do not seem to know what a theory is. And god of the gaps is the exact opposite of giving a temporary label to a measured but not well understood phenomenon. That is why religion has held back exploration because why look if they already have an answer?

The orbit of our solar system around the center of the Milky Way is likely to be perturbed, and perhaps the solar system will even be flung out of the Milky Way, but that's unlikely to significantly change the planets' relative orbits around the sun.

    • No, the expansion of the universe has been accelerating.

      @stephanieworkman5110@stephanieworkman511016 күн бұрын
    • It depends on the scale. Dark energy, as far as we know, has a constant density. If two galaxies are close enough, they will remain close because of their gravitational attraction. They're not affected because the universe's expansion effectively bypasses them. They just exist on an increasingly small share of the universe's volume. The real story is that dark energy's density may vary over time. A constant energy density means that as the universe grows, its dark energy grows. Since dark energy is repulsive, it hastens the expansion, leading to indefinite acceleration beyond c at some huge distance. When that occurs, from our perspective, the CMB will vanish from view, followed by galaxies in decreasing order of distance. Eventually, we will only see our gravitationally-bound neighborhood.
