Aaron, Landon & Neal Introduce the new 7 PRC cartridge from Hornady. They discuss specs and ballistic performance and compare it to the variety of popul ar 7mm cartridges including the 7 SAUM, 7 Rem Mag, 7 LRM and 28 Nosler. Aaron recounts the history of the introduction of the Gunwerks 7 LRM and its relation to the eventual introduction of the 7 PRC, comparing and contrasting the two and answering a variety of questions on peoples' minds regarding the new 7mm offering and its applications.

  • Regardless of your cartridge choice? As a long range shooter, hunter and former LE Sniper. That was one of the most informative and accurate break downs of terminal ballistics, energy for a lethal kill assessments that was backed up by data, experience, engineering that I have heard! I am not A Gunwerks customer, but Mr. Davidsons Knowledge and expertise in his field is impressive.

  • I’m in the process of another building another big game rifle right now. (Long lead times) it was going to be in 28 nosler. After listening to this I called my barrel manufacturer today and switch it to 7prc. I didn’t know it was a thing when I originally ordered it. I’m not a band wagoner but I can’t deny that the proof is in the pudding. I have loaded for many different cartridges but by far I have had most success with 6.5 CM and 6.5 PRC in terms of ease of finding an accurate, good load that the rifle likes. I don’t know what Hornady is doing that makes those cartridges so accurate and easy to load but I’m sold and I’ll follow them to the 7 prc. ( no need for a 300 ) Thank you for your input

This past spring I broke my 1 mile record by stretching it out to 2165 yards on a 40" target with several consecutive hits in a row, I think 6 hits. I just wanted to thank you for the motivation to get me started.

  • I purchased what I think is one of the original LR-1200 7MM Rem Mag rifles from these boys back in 2010 or 2011 Serial #CO457. It's equipped with a Nightforce NXS 5.5 22X50 scope with a yardage turret setup with the BC and MV for this cartridge. The rifle didn't come with a muzzle break so I had a reputable gunsmith install a very nice stainless break which really helps with recoil. Rifle weighs in at about 10lbs so hiking around the high country is not for the faint of heart! Gunwerks provided me with the load data for the rifle; 168 Berger 70.7 g H1000-3.420 COAL which I convert to 2.716 CBTO. Have always had this rifle zeroed at 500 yds. I was a hunting guide for many years in British Columbia and that rifle has seen a ton of high country. This rifle still shoots very accurately. I just had my gunsmith run a bore scope down the tube and while there is some minor throat erosion the rifling still looks awesome. Over the years I convinced more than a few hunters to invest in these platforms. Can't think of a single reason I would part with ol "Grizz"...Awesome rifle.

  • 6 years ago, I rebarreled a 300WM Savage 116 to 7SAUM for 175gn LR competition; I soured on it though when I took it elk hunting and realized all of the wasted action length and weight wasn't ideal for hunting. I always liked the SAUM concept, but it wasn't designed for the 175's and longer in the short action. Now the PRC comes out, and I see exactly what I was looking for in the 7SAUM- it will allow use of the 175's and be space efficient in a long action. Now I have to find a buyer for my SAUM barrel and loading dies.

  • Interesting discussion and lot's of info to ponder. Being an armchair ballistician and only having limited published data on the 7PRC ballistics it seems to me that this cartridge has the potential to replace 2 old veterans...the 7rm and 300wm. it surpasses the 7rm in all aspects and at hunting ranges generally equals and eventually surpasses the 300wm the further downrange you get...and it does it with less recoil If I'm chasing Dall sheep across the Brooks Range, I would much rather tote a 8lb 7prc up and down those mountains, especially knowing that it can reach out and touch that ram waaay over there. Any animal that you would reach for the 300wm you could just as effectively handle with the 7prc. jm2c.

  • I am 100% in agreement. I've been at this as long or longer than you and the 6.5 PRC in a 3" action (it suffers a bit in the 2.8" lengths) is the perfect big heavy high bc short action cartridge. Better than all the rest. The 7 PRC however is where a cartridge needs to be to hurl the phenomenal big 7's properly. A short action will never launch a .284 195 grain Berger at 3000fps. Hunting bullets are designed (with almost no practical exceptions) to expand fatally at velocities ranging from 1800-3000fps reliably. Push faster and you have problems at close range and slower and your range is limited. Every hunting cartridge should be designed to propel hunting bullets at velocities that work time and time again. Sure there are bullets designed for long range that tend to over expand up close at 3000+ (AccubondLR/Barnes LRX et al. I'm looking at you) that can perform at lower velocities (1600ish advertised) and some perhaps that trade reasonable controlled expansion at 3200ish for no expansion at 1800fps (Barnes has numerous bullets they recommend 2000fps minimum). After the bullet leaves the rifle it and the game don't care about the case or rifle or powder or sight. It is all stabilization, velocity, bullet construction , and trajectory at that point. The rifle is for us, the bullet is for the game. Pick the best bullet and get it traveling such that as soon as it leaves the barrel it is ready to do its job and doesn't quit before it is exhausted. That is how you design a great cartridge and that is why the PRC's are so great.

When 6.5 Creed came out I was interested, but not enough to buy in. I wanted comparable bullet weights to my .308 but with 6.5 Creed ballistics. 300PRC came along and it's cool, but it's too far the other direction in terms of bullet weight and recoil. When I heard about 7PRC it sounded like it may be the round I'm looking for. After listening to your more in depth discussion I am more convinced 7PRC will be a rifle I'll have to own. Thank you!

Same performace as the 7PRC. Midway has 18 Available cartriges in 7RM for only 3 7PRC. On the drawing board a lightweight 7MM, might go with the 280 AI

With a shorter fatter case (lapua bolt face) able to load the heavy for caliber bullets long and still fit in the mags (wyatts)is the way to go. BC'S are just as high with the new 30 cal high BC bullets as the 7mm are or better. With the proper break you can shoot the big 30 and still spot impacts.

Really the prc idea comes from guys loading high bc bullets in the short magnums but running into seating issues and powder compaction issues so hornady took a short fat magnum case lengthened the throat to seat the higher bc bullets.

  • Thats the problem. The 7 rem mag requires a custom rifle to shoot accurately compared to the 7mm PRC. I have a factory browning a bolt that I struggle to get MOA out of (usually 1.25-1.5). I don't want to get rid of it, but accuracy then becomes the bottleneck to shoot (hunt) long range. The saami specs for the 7 rem mag just don't seem to lend itself to accuracy in a factory rifle compared to the new 6.5 creedmoor, 6.5 PRC and 7 PRC, or am I missing something? Isn't my browning a bolt built with looser chamber / throat / free bore tolerances than a PRC? Obviously a 9.5 twist rate vs 8. I absolutely love the ballistics of a 7 rem mag but no way I am going to spend thousands on a custom rifle. What say you?

You can usually get a 168gr class bullet to stabilize well in a Rem Mag with factory twist rates, but much more than that and you usually need a custom rifle with faster twist to really do it right. But what sold me on the efficacy of 7 mm Rem Mag for long range or western hunting was the Gunwerks video where the host here and his son and a few others went elk hunting and got one at over 1,300 yards. The kid was good and kept his cool, corrected for wind and got the second shot as a solid hit. The elk was deceased before he piled up in the tree. And they harvested it, too. A few people have said that was an unethical shot. I disagree. If the shooter and the system are capable of a confident shot, it is just fine and how far you have to walk to get the meat is secondary. Would I get a 7 PRC? Most of the did not get their game they were shooting at but they would try and shoot other elk or deer. Wasted animals. The 7mag is a wonder cartridge in the right conditions especially if you reload with high B.C. Bullets. It’s all about ethics. I understand these guys have a business promoting long range shooting. They make money this way. What you do over a shooting bench for long range accuracy is one thing. But when you take the shooting bench issues to the field and try to kill animals is another thing. It’s wrong and makes all hunters look bad to the non hunters. You need to do your homework in the spring and summer to figure out what the animals are doing. You have to get in the field to do this. Anyone who has spent anytime shooting long range (past 600yrds) knows a slight gust of wind, a bit of a shift in eye relief even the beating of your own heart can change a bullets path drastically when you stretch it out at long range. I prefer to practice two ethical disciplines, One: Shooting my game animals at ethical distances that give the best chance for a clean quick death and Two: Shooting well built well crafted rifles designed to hit the smallest group possible at a very long range (a miss on paper does not cause a long painful death). I feel that merging these two disciplines into one unethical discipline is just not right. For every video you see on KZhead of some chuckle head hitting a big game animal out past 1000yrds and killing it, there are several more that are not posted of wounded animals that were never recovered. It’s a free country and do what you want, but I think this trend is hurting the hunting industry and making people think that 1000yrd shot is fine even when they have never tried it earlier. Just my two cents.
