  • Metro Exodus is probably the best example because it's an obvious visual upgrade while somehow running on par with the no RT version, in some scenarios running even better. It adds a lot of truth to the claim that raytraced-only lighting is actually no more graphically intensive than rasterized-only lighting, it's just a matter of most current gen developers not having the skillset to properly work with RT because they've been trained to work with raster all their lives and games are primarily made for consoles (which don't play nice with RT).

    • Yup, Metro is really the only game where RT transforms the visuals and is worth the perf hit. Even now playing through Alan wake 2 with PT on, it doesn't add anything amazing to it. Id argue frame generation is a bigger feature nowadays than path tracing, and even some Ray tracing (reflections is still worth it to me, going past rainy car windows in cyberpunk and seeing the cities reflections won't ever get old to me)

    • I agree RT is most transformative in Metro Exodus. I also liked PT in Cyberpunk and RT in The Witcher 3. RT in Jedi Survivor is not as transformative, but at least it does not come with a huge performance hit.

    • Would be nice if they updated it to have ray reconstruction. Could potentially even run slightly better and have much more responsive bounce lighting.

    • I think RT in Cyberpunk is a major upgrade, graphically. I actually tested it myself just a day ago and it feels like a different game, visually without it. That said, I'm only able to run the game with RT with frame generation, so clearly it's not worth it otherwise, but now that I've played the game with RT, I don't want to go back to playing without it. Frame generation is going to allow more gamers to experience RT without having to spend thousands of dollars on a gaming rig in order to do so.

  • The performance loss for the visual upgrade is pretty big. Sometimes rt just looks diffirent without being better. Maybe in the future Rt will make the game development easier but for now is a personal preference .

    • Full RT like in Cyberpunk or almost full RT like in AW2 definitely makes a big difference. Most games still only use it for one feature though, reflections, GI OR shadows. If the game is using RT for reflections, then of course its not going to be a big difference other than for reflective surfaces. That doesn't mean RT is bad, it means RT isn't used fully yet.

  • Very good showcase, adding cyberpunk ending theme as background music is a jewel in this crown. Only thing worth mentioning is that some games have mods that add even further visual enhancement to RT ( like Hogwarts sammilucia rt config or Witcher 3 uberrtxgi mod ).

  • This is a great video. The effects of RT and PT are very scene dependent. It some scenes i barely notice a difference, in others it's like wow. I like the reflections are the most important thing for me.

    • I play CP at 1440p 120+ Fps with 4080. PT makes dark street corners super dark and scary and realistic and I love it. The game does not even have flashlight so it's even better.

  • PT looks so so realistic in CP2077 man! Look at those reflections, they're very realistic and perfect. For me, anytime & anyday I could trade my high fps for PT implementation like in this game.   • Ray traced reflections seem to be the only visual upgrade worth the FPS hit if your card can handle it. Losing 50% or more of your frame rate for slightly better ambient occlusion is it worth it to me when you can achieve similar results with Reshade MXAO for less performance.

  • I'd be curious of the performance difference with The Witcher 3 when you compared RT off running in DX11 mode and RT on running in DX12 mode. Just Enabling DX12 (without RT) is a huge performance impact, and I'd suspect that most people would run DX11 when they don't want to use RT.

  • Found a good deal on rtx 4070. It's been 5 years since rtx came out. I was eagerly trying to test rtx. To be honest I was a little disappointed in how rtx performs even with path tracing on. I feel like a simple GTX should get people through a few more years.

  • After look at this, I can say that PT looks an actual upgrade. RT has so much noise, kind of distracting. It will be a long time for GPUs to be able to do that well.

Not every dev studio wants to invest into path tracing, they prefer to have default UE5 features. Lumen is better than nothing, but is nowhere close to path traced lighting And Lumen is also noisyl, not having a RR built in. Or may be it depends on a game more or less

  • Different games have completely different results of using RTX. Where the game is transformed and becomes very beautiful, and where nothing changes. But I personally think that path tracing is the most effective result, but it is too heavy. In Cyberpunk this technology is very beautiful. And thanks for the music, I'm crying again.

  • Rt is a nice tech but something that disturbs me soo much is not that it is fps intensive but its about that most games with it uses screen space and its just a me problem but it just can't be unavoidable my opinion

  • As per the video these are things which are "most noticeable". The star mark (*) indicates what i would personally use for each game. CP2077: raster: for performance rt: for significantly crisper reflections pt: for significantly better global illumination and denser shadows/ao and all of rt* Alan Wake 2: raster: for performance* rt: for crisper reflections pt: for denser shadows/ao and all of rt Dying Light 2: raster: for performance rt: for significantly better global illumination in indoor spaces and overall better reflections* Elden Ring: raster: for performance* rt: shadows and ao aren't that noticeable when playing but will mention Hogwarts: raster: for performance* (sometimes better AO in outdoor spaces compared to RT) rt: for reflections even if they are very low quality and noisy Star Wars Jedi Survivor: raster: for performance* (GI is really good) rt: for low quality reflections same as hogwarts The FINALS: raster: for performance, however, compared to rt performance increase isnt that high rt: for clarity in dark spaces* (since this is a competitive title, most are advised to turn off rt, however, in this game since the performance loss isnt that much and considering the clarity gain u get, i think rt is better than raster) Ratchet and Clank: raster: for performance* rt: for crisper reflections Metro Exodus: raster: for performance and atmosphere* original rt: for unnoticeable GI improvement (has some lighting inaccuracies as well) enhanced rt: more realistic GI (however takes away the atmosphere - this is a subjective opinion) Witcher 3: raster: for performance and atmosphere* rt: global illumination is better but takes away atmosphere (subjective) In conclusion, the most noticeable difference in almost all games are the changes to GI which may/may not have a better visual uplift. sometimes rtgi takes away the "atmosphere" from the games. Sometimes it adds to the atmosphere like in indoor spaces in Dying Light 2 (subjective). Hence RT is very much game-dependent. Reflections comes at a second place for me and that too is only worth it in cp2077 (subjective). Overall ray tracing is only worth using in CP2077, Dying Light and THE FINALS only.

  • My takeaway watching this is that rt reflections add the most value. Unless you're path tracing, prebaked lighting tends to look better (and closer to the path tracing) than rt.

  • Frames drop a lot with RT and PT! Even with a very expensive gpu like the 4080! It doesn't seem worth it to pay so much money for this. And in many cases the visual difference is too small to notice.

    • @@Ragssssss if you start cherry picking, you can find some cases that RT and PT look much better, this is true. If I start cherry picking too, I could find cases that there is no difference. Also, in some cases RT/PT has more detail but at the same time it looks a bit unnatural, like floors or streets that look more like mirrors, lol. It is not bad to have these options for some games but realistically speaking, they are overrated and not needed for the average gamer. Maybe only for some geeks that want to spend a ton of money and stand there looking at shinny surfaces in 4K when they play Cyberpunk.

    • It is tranformative in some places ( like outskirts of lyendell) and very subtle in others , performance isn't bad if not for the fact it doesn't have any upscaling and you're forced to deal with native RT , which virtually no one does since it's so heavy . I wish they added reflections as well but they must add upscaling to make this mode usable

    • @@Aleksey-vd9oc "Эффект" лучей зависит от сцены. Статичное можно запечь так, что и не будет отличаться. Даже контра новая выглядит как будто в ней глобальное освещение. Которого там нет, естественно. Но это не значит, что валв более пряморукие, чем CDPR или Ремеди. Игры абсолютно разные. Полностью динамичное освещение в огромном мире киберпунка делать без лучей - рехнуться можно. Потому там и выглядит с трассировкой во многих местах намного лучше. Не везде, но много где. Или разрабы Метро криворукие? Ну ок, как скажешь и что пруфы? Коробочный Lumen - убожество. Я не сказал, что там нет лучей. Они есть, но вперемешку со Screen-space эффектами. И без отражений. И это прекрасно видно в играх на ue5

В свое время шейдеры тоже были лишь модной "маркетинговой" фишкой... Для меня не существует вопроса, есть у лучей будущее или нет, я сейчас конкретно утверждаю что в 2024 это маст хэв. Я не разраб, просто вижу факты: так или иначе лучи юзают более 200 а может 300 игр, не помню точно Лучи поддерживаются всеми ключевыми вендорами, от видюх до движков и библиотек амудэ планирует вроде в рдна 4 или 5 существенно нарастить лучи И уже даже сейчас лучи поддерживаются более чем половиной видюх ... будущее наступило upd. Да и прекрасный люмен, который умеет только статические меши, неожиданно жрет дохрена ресурсов, пусть не RT, но шейдерных ... и в результате имеет теже -50% фпс что и при лучах )))

    • From my experience i played Hogwarts with DLAA instead of DLSS and no rt but also i included config that had function to reduce stutters but it also boosted graphics and it made my experience immersive asf and graphics were amazing in some places especially when flying on broom.
