"Find Me", World Champion Ice Dancers Gabriella Papadakis, Guillaume Cizeron perform 2020 Free Dance

4 time World Ice Dance Champions and Olympic Silver Medallists, Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France ran through their stunning Free Dance to "Find Me", by Forest Blakk, in training, in December 2019.
Filmed right before the Grand Prix final, to me, this video represents some of the sadness of the year that followed. Sad because its not the final version of their routine. Not the ultimate peak of what this extraordinary routine became, and as Worlds was cancelled, not the peak of what it could have become. A metaphor for how very much has been cut short in the recent past.
That said, this is one of my favorite pieces of footage to date, and I am so grateful for the moment it created, and to be able to share it from my perspective. This is such a beautiful routine, and I am happy to be releasing this on February 14th - Valentine's Day!

  • It might sound silly, but watching this pair’s performance reminds me of my parents’ marriage. They have been happily married for over 40 years. Like these skaters, they trust each other completely, they both know when to lead and when to follow, they are always in sync, they keep each other from falling, they hold each other close. It’s a beautiful thing how art can imitate life. Phenomenal performance!

    • Ice time. It may seem rude but athletes have no time to waste. Their minutes are accounted for. We gotta see it from their perspective too. Every minute counts. And no one is going to give them more time when they say "Can I get 4 minutes 23 seconds more? I was watching my colleagues skating". All they'll get is "Your choice. Not my problem". While we can watch and marvel in the beauty of the dance, the people there have their own stuff to do if they want to succeed and not just watch others succeed.

      @pearlsapphireblueelf@pearlsapphireblueelf3 жыл бұрын
    • True but as much as it seems rude it’s not they are also paying for their ice time their training should go on as planned they shoudk not need to account for anyone else since everyone’s paying for their ice time to use the rink. They already were respectful by starting tehir training towards the sides and then moving further inside when the filming was almost finsihed.

  • The lyrics: Forest Blakk - Find Me I was once told that walking through a doorway could cause someone to forget Even the most precious memories they had Memories of good, memories of bad, memories of love and of loss All tucked away neatly Stored like the worn out blankets that were kept to dress the rainy days And bad habits that happen from time to time Or what it felt like to rest your head on a friend's shoulder That still carries with it the creases from where you last placed your heart Just like that Gone within a single step That somehow three beams and an imaginary line drawn across some old aching floorboards Were all that stood between you and the infinite silence Of the very things that once colored your mind with sound It's funny You can make yourself believe almost anything if you... If you think about it for long enough (Was that you?) (Was that you?) I was once told that the love I felt beating inside my chest Was nothing more than my mind playing an unfair trick on my heart And like a pair of dice dancing along the uneven pavement Their fate, much like yours or mine had already been decided That even the cracks that drew their faults between two opposing sides Cannot escape a fate that was always destined to be sealed To think That someone could actually believe that the swelling tides of my heart Were no more than an anxious highway of ins and outs Anchoring my imagination to the castles I've been building in the sky... Well, maybe "they" are the crazy ones Then again, I have been known to misplace my hope in the way things fall And if I had to confess there stands a greater chance that I have all but lost my mind in here So I suppose it's better off this way Because I've always believed that the odds of finding what you seek Tend to favor those who are open to seeking them in the first place And I for one have never quite understood how odds stand to get even without that frame in mind To be clear I've seen a million faces I've seen a million different faces Each one mirroring that of your own And still, none of them felt like home to me None of them have felt like you So here we are And I can vaguely and strangely trace your outline I can remember what it felt like to hold you I can remember what it was like to stare blindly Into your eyes for what felt like an eternity How could I forget that? I could never forget that I could never forget you No matter how long it takes for my words to make their way Through the vastness of this place we've called home I unto you and you unto me I say them and will continue to do so Day after day Night after night Never knowing if you'll actually hear them There is no place for time here Just overlapping moments where I thought I'd found you Where I thought I heard the sound of your breath Where I felt your heart as it waited patiently for mine Retracing the steps that we left in the life before last Before our eyes closed Before the great divide Before a doorway stood between you and me As it stands I've found myself in that doorway again With both feet in and your heart on my sleeve But I can't bring myself to walk through this time Not yet at least Not until I take one last look and see that it was you That it was always you Our hearts strewn across those old fragile floorboards The silhouettes of each and every one of our memories Playing out like a story that we both know we've seen before I remember now This was where I first found you And beyond those closed doors I will find you again My love I will find you again I will find you again I will find you I will find you

  • I keep watching on repeat and I love how the dance moves line up with the lyrics: - "walking through a doorway" 0:33 - "forget ... precious memories" = head/mental trauma 0:39 - "love and loss" = holding then letting go 0:44 - "friend's shoulder" 0:56 - "placed your heart" 1:00 - "gone within a single step" 1:04 - "to hold you" 2:16 - And for their dramatic spin where Guillaume literally flings Gabriella into the air horizontally (lol), it matches the dramatic rise in the music at 2:33. Then from there, their dancing gets faster and more frantic. There are definitely more examples! I'm sure every step was taken into consideration by the choreographer(s). You can tell they put a lot of thought into the story.

    • Yet another thing haha: I had actually discovered and loved Olafur Arnalds’ music before seeing this program. I couldn’t believe that it was his music that was mixed together with Forest Blakk’s to create this beautiful, haunting soundtrack. It’s not just one Olafur Arnalds piece, I think they must have blended many many together - I’ve read that it’s Danny and Suspects (cited here in the info box), which are both interesting and haunting (especially Suspects ... talk about jump scare movie moment), but I also hear elements of others. I don’t know where that ominous bell toll sound comes from. Anyway, the first Olafur Arnalds song I heard was on the radio out of the blue, called “re:member” - and it’s still my favourite of his. I recommend 😌

  • something about this program always makes me sit for a ten good minutes afterwards reflecting and trying to process what has just happened. this pure connection of their movements and their skating with the lyrics and the melodies and the beat... it feels so natural, as if the sounds and music are the result of what they do on ice. this is what ice dance was always supposed to be. i'm not even bothered with looking for specific elements, it's the least of my concerns. every second out of these 4.10 minutes i'm there in this bubble of theirs sharing love, hurt, anger, fear. it's such a peculiar magic which i still have no explanation for. thank you, Jordan, for bringing us joy once again. it makes me miss them hella lot on ice, and i will be patiently but eagerly awaiting their comeback.

    • I really understand. I had the same comparison feelings come up while watching this but I managed to recognize it, let it go and just watch and feel their art. OIP is right, we all have our part. I was in an online event with Elizabeth Gilbert the other day who talked about purpose, and told a story of how she once held a ladder on the street thinking it didn’t look too stable. She said “you can’t prove that it wasn’t my sole purpose in life just to hold that ladder. We can’t know our purpose, so just do what your heart tells you you want to do”. Thank you OIP for sharing this beauty to the world. There is an art to what you do too. I’ve always loved watching figure skating but the way you do it adds so much. ❤️

  • (One of) The most artistic and poetic ice skating free dance performance. Papadakis and Cizeron, of course. The choreography ... The accompanying music ... The poems ... The theatrical expression ... The cinematography ... Everything. And I just want to leave these stamps here. Excerpt of Find Me - Forest Blakk (0:33) I was once told that walking through a doorway could cause someone to forget Even the most precious memories they had Memories of good, memories of bad, memories of love and of loss All tucked away neatly Stored like the worn out blankets that were kept to dress the rainy days And bad habits that happen from time to time Or what it felt like to rest your head on a friend's shoulder That still carries with it the creases from where you last placed your heart Just like that Gone within a single step (2:10) So here we are And I can vaguely and strangely trace your outline I can remember what it felt like to hold you I can remember what it was like to stare blindly Into your eyes for what felt like an eternity How could I forget that? I could never forget that I could never forget you (3:23) As it stands I've found myself in that doorway again With both feet in and your heart on my sleeve But I can't bring myself to walk through this time Not yet at least Not until I take one last look and see that it was you That it was always you (3:58) I will find you again I will find you again

  • *WOW!* I mean, those two with their performance is amazing in itself, but your work with the camera is stunning! You clearly practiced with them, making the turns with them and sometimes even leading just a bit to make sure you were out of the way, rather than reacting to their movement and following. And if you run it at 4K on a big screen right in front of you, you really start to get the feeling of actually being there in the movements with them, because you stay with them so perfectly and smoothly. Absolutely awesome!
