How does Luta Livre differ from BJJ?

Brazil is a superpower when it comes to modern grappling arts due to the explosion of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu around the world. Yet there is another grappling art that comes from the jungles of Brazil that is a very effective grappling method known as Luta Livre.
Luta Livre is not as well known as BJJ but there still are many famous MMA fighters who practice or came from a Luta Livre background such as Marco Ruas, Jose Aldo, Darren Till, Renato Sobral, Alexandre Franca Noguira, Gesias Calvacante and more.
Luta Livre shares many similar characteristics to BJJ, both come from Brazil, both have submissions and allow all ground positions, both teach the practitioner to fight off the back, both have been used in MMA successfully and many other similarities that both arts share can be seen when comparing BJJ to Luta Livre.
That said, the main question when comparing Luta Livre to BJJ is how does Luta Livre differ from Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as most times, people think Luta Livre simply is No-gi BJJ and although that may look like what it is on the surface, it is definitely not the case.

  • Good explanation, although there is much more to say.... I just consider that the LLB does not come from the jungles, it has developed in an intense rivalry with the JJB, since the 1920s in Rio de Janeiro.

    • Are you Brazilian? I'm asking cause I am, and I just wanna sharing something, I live in Recife, Pernambuco's capital, I am blue belt jiujiteiro, don't get me wrong, I'm proud of my sucuri, I'm Just saying this shit, because around here there is no Luta livre or wrestling gym, can you believe It? It would be a source of pride for me to become a practitioner of Luta Livre. Oss.

    • @@LutaLivre_Lippe That’s unfortunate. The only Luta Livre gym I’m aware of in Brazil is called “Budokan Academia” located in Ticuja, Rio De Janeiro, which is where the instructor of the gym I know trains and teaches at now at the moment. Also, I’m not Brazilian, I live in the Philippines.

  • Great video, very good content and well explained, blue belt in Luta Livre here, with all due respect, Luta Livre is not a step back from Jiu Jitsu but a step forward, don't get me wrong, Jiu Jitsu is an efficient martial art yes, but it is not the most developed of the grappler arts, Luta Livre, ancient Judo, Catch as Can and Sambo, are much more developed arts than Jiu Jitsu, the creators of Jiu Jitsu, Carlos and Hélio Gracie, Luiz França, Oswaldo Fadda, and other great masters, always vehemently stated that Jiu Jitsu can only be fought with kimono, Jiu Jitsu fighters said that Luta Livre was for the poor people in the favelas who didn't have money to buy kimono and called them Sapateiros (Shoemakers), because they applied heel hooks to finish the fights... Time passed, but the hurt or who knows the huge Ego of Jiu Jitsu with "the shoemakers without money from the favela" continues to be great, so much so that they started teaching their students to be shoemakers, they teach them to take off their kimono too, but they still continue to call themselves Jiujiteiros... One thing that is truly admirable is the propaganda of the Gracies and the competence of Jiu Jitsu federations around the world, they certainly give our Luta Livre Federation a real beating.

  • Luta Livre and Catch are Based. BJJ is cringe. Don't get me wrong.... BJJ as an grappling art is awesome, BJJ guys are awesome to grapple with. What I hate is the cult propaganda-marketing fluff that goes with it. Gracies are a cult, always have been.

    • The thing is, no one does any of those execpt BJJ. Try to find a luta livre school or catch school in the average town, you wont. BJJ schools often give you enough variety

      @thebignacho@thebignacho7 ай бұрын
  • Luta livre and catch is far more position before submission, unnecessary risks especially in Catch wrestling aren't taken. It's frowned upon to give away top position to attack a submission. Imagine pulling guard to go for a submission very common in BJJ frowned upon in Catch and Luta Livre, think hooking in to take the back, in catch theyll stand and submit whenever possible.

  • The roots of Jiu-Jitsu and Luta livre, and ALL other grappling style, goes all way back to a ancient civilisation called indo-europeans (Aryans). This story was kept in secrecy because is not only about fighting.. but everything else... i could tell you, but it's so disconnected to what you have learned from the history books... that I would sound crazy....

Honestly, if you hadn't said anything I don't think I'd have realized you had any tics. They happen so fast and you do a great job handling them, so when you did tic, I actually thought the video had skipped like a thousandth of a second. Tourette's or not, that was a great video. Thank you for creating it.
