Abandoned House in Portugal Renovation - 3 Year Timelapse

We're three years in and have many more years to go...
In this video we'll show you everything we've done to renovate this abandoned stone farm house in central Portugal - so far!
This project has definitely been full of surprises and work that we didn't ever imagine doing or taking on ourselves but it's been an exciting journey so far.
We've done lots of demolition and rip out - from bathrooms to rotten wood to old damaged plaster. We've done a bit of rebuilding, using traditional and natural materials where possible. So far we've tried our hand at constructing stud walls, laying sub floors, doing lots of digging, off grid solar electrics, some plumbing, tiling and lots of lime plastering (with hemp added to the mix). Check out what we've been up to and stick around for future episodes as we've got a lot more to show you!

  • Looking back, wasn't €70,000 too much for this property? What is your opinion? On the first floor almost only the outer walls remained standing. You really started with so much enthusiasm. This work would cost an enormous amount of money if it were done by a construction company. The result would certainly not be as satisfactory for you. You have done this with dedication until now. I'm very excited to see the video of you moving in. You have to hurry because I'm 75 years old and I look forward to seeing you every week.

    • We don’t think it was too much, because it’s more than just the house we bought. It’s an acre of land, which is almost all flat and is 100% usable, in a great location with lots of amenities (supermarket, banks, doctors, restaurants) only 5mins away, and there are 2 buildings to renovate. Doing it ourself and at the speed we can do has definitely helped the budget too 😃

    • Maybe it was a lil bit expensive back in the day but even if they didnt do anything the property would be at least 150k by now. Everything increased prices, even complete ruins in the middle of nowhere its crazy. Damn you english, french, germans and brazilians buying everything LOL

    • Hi. I don't think you paid too much for it, today you would easily pay much over the 100k...I Wish you all the best you got yourselves a sub, from a possible neighbor, Portugal is an awesome country, we Portuguese people don't realize it much, we just live a simple life, work hard, raise a family, buy a cheap house(if you already bought a car), retire, raise grandson's and die forgotten, by everyone you cared and loved during life...we are poor basterds who get mugged every single day, by our dear Good friend Prime minister...we struggle a whole life to buy this, or that, but at the end we own nothing, or even if we own we won't be using it for a long time, retiring at 67yrs...sorry for ruining your positive comments here...I just feel sad, because it's gonna be my ending, I'm a 38 yrs old father of two, that feels depressed, about everything, life is so hard, our governments, our rulers who ever the hell run everything, just need us to fulfill their objectives, this shitty wars, they don't care, this crisis on housing market, financial crises because of the war, and the gas prices, I mean come on let a man life a humble but honorable life. I'm good in life I can't say I'm bad, but I see so many people not having a fair one. Again sorry and thank you for making this video it just proves my point that Portugal is the best country for welthy people, retired people and for criminals 😞✅👍 I see no future ahead that ends positive...what world will I leave for my daughter's as heritage??? Cheers and Why So Serious?😂

However that aside you both just “took the bull by the horns” and got stuck in …. What a mammoth achievement…. It has been a total rebuild within the walls of the house. I am just so impressed with your work ethic … always working according to a plan, always cleaning up as you worked and on top of that you were filming and editing … just absolutely blown away by your project thus far …. Huge respect !!!! Durban SA🇿🇦

Have you, at any stage, thought this is too much? it was exhausting watching this extraordinary project. I found tears in my eyes every time you found more rotten timber, I just wondered how you felt. I hope you manage a warm room for the coming winter. Bless you.

We never thought we could live in the house in the condition it was in, but we definitely underestimated the amount of work required. And almost daily we ask ourselves why we’re doing this crazy project 😂🤣😂

Hats off to you both. When you look back on the unexpected work, if you knewwhat you would have to do when you viewed the house would you have bought it? • We really enjoy your videos. We’ve learned a lot and appreciate knowing details about Stone Houses. We appreciate your attention to detail and incorporating old time practices. A ton of work but when done correctly or right the first time, = less work, less maintenance and less future problems. Doing things right the “First Time” was how I was taught to do things, and although it might take time, it has always been the best in all aspects. The time lapse was fast but I remember when you found out you had used the wrong ingredients for pointing and had to undo and redo all that work but again doing something Right and helping with dampness was your goal, so it all got redone. And the same with the wood beems. We’ve been watching your channel for almost 3 years. It’s hard to watch other folks do renovation because they don’t research or understand the building they are renovating like you guys do. I’ve commented on several other renovation channels and included your channel’s link, so they had a place to refer to and learn. Also you’re one of my favorite channels because I never have to write and say put a mask on or other safety equipment, something this Registered Nurse appreciates very much. Look forward to videos on future work and progress, and especially when you can move in. Keep safe and take care

  • My town has just emerged from the middle of the 'Red zone' of torrential rain and high winds. Your bit of the world is warmer and drier. Now that you don't have the pink bathroom I am no longer jealous of that but I do envy you the generally warm weather.
