Complete restoration of a rare and very rusty brush cutting mower engine. It's a Briggs and Stratton model 14 which produces 5 horsepower. Can I rescue it to a perfect running condition?
Briggs and Stratton small engine rebuild restoration
Thank you to my Patrons

Thanks for not playing music....The sound of the restortation is music of it's own.
Exactly! A huge thanks!
I totally agree. Not everything needs music.
Amen
No truer words spoken👍
It's soooo lovely to only hear what's happening, instead of stupid muzak..
pojoel 100% on that!
The videos that have crappy music dubbed over them always get a well deserved thumbs down from me.
shawbros I don’t know 🤷🏾♂️ why people think tool/mechanical guys want to hear Muzak
for me its like this: youtuber: *[plays shitty music over a restoration of something]* me: here. *[slaps dislike]* go f*ck yourself. *[goes off video]*
Is that a porcupine tree fan I smell?
The new old stock parts are fantastic, little gems in this restoration. Well done!
This is a rare one 1400 series aluminum’s horizontals are rare verticals even more these were the first of the aluminum big blocks some had airvain governors some mechanical this is the first mechanical version with the one piece flo jet I had a chance years ago to have one with the two piece flo jet wished like hell I took it don’t find any now even now the 8 hp units are getting scarce

I don't know about everyone else, but for myself, in this current World, where almost everything is entirely BS, I find your videos a very welcome and satisfying distraction from reality. Long may it continue! :)
Seconded.
Thirded !
This video has BS in it. It just stands for Briggs and Stratton.!
Interesting ... Victa was the first Rotary mower sfmkm.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_38.html Wonder what they call one driven by belt or chain. Still seems like a rotary.
I 100% agree!
It’s always great seeing an old machine rebuilt and returning to service. I’ll take that anytime over something similar that’s new from China.
I remember these engines very well, worked on them all the time as a kid.
It's been a while, but as usual I am amazed at the articulate work and artistry you do when you are restoring these old relics.. You are really genuine , and I appreciate your videos..
ah, good ol' old stuff, stuff thats actually MEANT to be taken apart.
correct! new engines have WAY too many things that just make them harder to work on. old engines are easier to work on because they are simpler than new ones
Thanks! currently restoring a Hayterett mower with the same engine, good to see the strip and rebuild, very helpful. Thanks
wow that's the first time i ever seen a hydrolic puller .. that thing is sweet .. great vid!!
Feel like ive been on safari, ive seen a world of parts i never laid eyes on. Great no music, no useless yapping, thanks.
Fantastic rebuild, and what a piece of machinery! The engine reminds me of the 5 hp Briggs we had on the back of our AMF riding mower in the late 60’s early 70’s. It ran for years until one day Dad forgot to check the oil, ran it dry and it seized up. I took the engine off and rebuilt it for him, it ran for another dozen or so years before we gave the mower away. You could buy all of those parts at the local mower shop back then!
That is a 5 and 3/4 horse engine some people call it is fixed but it's a 5 and 3/4
Mechanical skill, a good memory, and an attention to the details made for an interesting rebuild, good job.
Been ages since I have seen you man, glad I'm back. Am I only one that likes the red assembly lube?
I love these old rebuild videos. I rebuild an identical engine from my parent's old rototiller in highschool for my auto shop final. Neat watching in such short time what took me over 6 weeks (only being able to work on it for an hour or so a day)
This really does take the restoration process to an artform. Just mesmerising. 👍
Great job! My OCD wouldn’t let me fit that tremendous rebuilt engine into the machine until it was all cleaned and rebuilt. I’m envious to those that can.
That thing is so happy now! Just chugging along! Look at it!!!
Thank you, you have helped me aspire to rebuild an engine, which I am doing right now, an old briggs and stratton rototiller motor.
Didn’t even know a hot washer existed before watching, great tool!
Hello Machinery Restorer. If I had a quid (£) for every Briggs engine I worked on I would be a millionaire today :-) :-) I worked for years as an Industrial Fitter/Mechanic repairing everything from Farm & Horticultural machinery to the commoner garden lawnmower. Nice job on that Briggs engine. At that age and obvious wear & tear I would have done a rebore, valve guide replacement, re-cut the valve seats, etc, etc. The older Briggs engines (and others) were designed for repair, unlike the engines of today. :-) The first time I saw a nylon cam shaft I thought it was the end of the world hehehe. Nice job, well done.
This type of stuff really gets me excited, i love the videos man keep up the good work!
Next object must be an old Wimbledon 1/4" heavy cylinder lawn mower for your turf garden, Daggerwin! ;D
Uppsalahazze Markstedt you watch daggerwin too! I love his survival role play videos :)
Brilliant Job. I worked on small Petter engines when I was a young apprentice, back in the seventies. It`s amazing what these little engines will take and still Run on.
Is it weird that watching you loosen a straight slot screw is really satisfying to watch? Love the vids. Not enough mechanical genius vids to watch nowadays. Thanks for the videos.
I really enjoyed this video. Just proves that a person needs the right tools for the job. Excellent work!
I nerd out with stiff like this. Very well done video. No narration needed.making the old new again is , fun for the lack of a better word. Thanks for sharing.
It was very satisfying to see the new rings at 18:04. I was happy to see the packaging has not changed. Brought back great memories.
Beautiful work and thumbs up for B&S for still having parts around.
Fantastic restore mate ! Brilliant content. Poetry in motion . Superb . Well done . 👏🏻👍🏻
31:44 when filling the oil, do you always match the funnel color to the color of the engine? don´t you think you are carrying perfectionism a tad too far? ;)
peter koller always! Well, not really. I have a green funnel, I’ll have bolo for a green engine. Good video wasn’t it? Jim
There's no need for such a sarcastic comment like that.
goinghomesomeday1 he was joking, relax
jim s Trey to uh high by
@@goinghomesomeday1 Any chance of you going home very soon?
Love seeing these old mowers restored, they were built so much better back then. 👍
What's insane is how much grass you can cut with that mower. I really want that mower.
Love the sound of that Briggs engine
Big thumbs up for all the content on your channel, my dad has an old mower at the bottom of the garden and I’ve been watching all your stuff so I can have a crack at getting it going again , all the best 😀
It totally amazes me that when people buy a lawn mower they never give it any thought that the oil has to be changed. This engine is a perfect example of what I am talking about.
Good job I never had the ring compressor , always used a big hose clamp . Good job on the restoration , anymore those major jobs have turned in a disposable mowers because of the labor cost . I restored a. Old 3 1/2 Briggs push mower one time and put chrome rings in , sold it for it was 25 years old ( it was still running good when I sold it ) and bought a new one . But the old stuff was easy to work on - thanks for the reminiscing session .
I wonder why he didn't hone the cylinder. I believe that is always recommended when installing new rings as it allows them to seat in well.
It's an aluminum bore engine. Depending on the type of rings he used, it's usually wasn't advisable to hone an aluminum bore as the hone will leave grit behind imbedded in the cylinder walls, which is difficult to remove. EDIT: Watched further into the video, and appears the NOS rings he used were plated, just like the piston should be. You don't hone for those.
A very light cross hatch with a fine stone should have been used to help remove an scores down the length of the bore. a second clean would have had to be done, but the rings stiil need a surface to mate to. it's the only part of the video that I questioned. Extra care would have had to be taken due to the aluminium block, but done nonetheless.
You aren't supposed to hone a "Kool Bore" aluminum bore. Your bore is either OK or it isn't.
Didn't need it it will wear in properly
@@erikj.2066 Thank you that's what I was going to say
I have watched many restoration videos, and you are the only one, that I've seen, that uses a torque wrench to put things back together. Another job well done sir.
Thanks 👍
The engine sounds real healthy you did a great job you must’ve been gathering up those parts for years
These videos are so satisfying, keep up the good work mate
I never thought I'd be so happy watching a video of someone mowing the lawn. I want that lawnmower (or that type). No bog down cutting thick grass. I lost my favorite mower as a kid (one of those scary reel-to-reel 5hp craftsman) when the fuel hose got ripped of at the same time as the spark plug. Wish I could find another... burnt it all up
A video without music - wonderful.
Wicked! A Rat Rod lawn Mower! It must be nice to have the specialty tools for the job, it makes life a lot easier. Good Job brother in keeping this old girl alive! 👍👍👍
Nice video! About 10 years ago my father brought me a Tecumseh LAV35 from our neighbor. I spent a lot of afternoons to restore it after school. I did almost everything you do in the video. Unfortunately the piston-ring replacement was not enought to avoid oil consume of the engine. After 4 years of using it the 45 years old lawn mower has been retired. Now it is a "statue" in my workshop. A lot of memories.
Ooo, those spring "Pliers" are so simplistically satisfying, so were the piston ring ones!
Great restore!!. Thank you for taking the time to make this awesome video
Wow ! This is a true tlc restoration! New rings, new conrod, new sump! When you took the head off it was so clean. Sludge in sump appears to be lead from the leaded fuel days. This engine was already built to handle unleaded fuel with such good valves. Only thing viewers would probably miss is a compression test before and after.
Another great video . I would like to see the field you cleaned up ; and the trees you planted , even if they failed / died . Thank you
If that engine was alive it would say, "Thank the maker! This oil bath is going to feel so good!"
An old Briggs and Stratton lives on. Lovely to see. It really is.
Nice job! Nice to see these classic Briggs engines get new life!
Great work...and great to see restoration carried out in decent boots and gloves and not a flip flop in sight!
This was fun and educational to watch. Wonderful craftsmanship. Thanks for posting.
Great stuff you inspired me to save lawnmower from scrap and restore them thanks I have six in total 4 B&S one tecumseh and a Mountfield all running well restored ,it is a hobby I enjoy very much cheers for the inspiration
Very nice restoration on a truly magnificent yard machine...best wishes and stay healthy.
that was very enjoyable, look forward to see whats next
I found out that your best videos are when you talk and explain. I have learned so much when you talk. So please continue commenting. Otherwise there are plenty of channels who just shows work but does not teach. I do not watch for entertainment. Thx for video!
I really enjoyed watching you work. Thanks !
Great job. That had a strong, even idle.
You done a fine job rebuilding that engine; runs great.
This was much more interesting than I thought it would be.
JustWasted3HoursHere took me back to shop class in middle school.
These videos are calming to watch. Really not bad for a 54 year old engine!
I am a firm believer in breathing new life into tired iron. I would have run a dingleberry home on the cylinder for 15 seconds to knock the glaze off it. Good video.
You do beautiful work. I wish there was a shop class like your videos when I was in high school (1973).
You got to do the rest man, lovely work.
amazing job!!! I was hoping to see you do the frame and all the other parts as well.... Anyway, i'm not the one doing the job nor could I do it! I will sit back and keep enjoying as you produce the videos! Once again, AWESOME WORK!
Beautiful work. Correct tools, knowledge how to use them, great craftsmanship. This engine can now work for another 50 years.
You did a good job on this restoration. Very thorough.
It's beautiful great work. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Yessss! My favorite KZheadr just uploaded great vid!
Loverly rebuild, well worth your effort :-D No oil being burnt and it sounds very stable.
I really admire people who are gifted with these special kind of skills.
Great video, great job! I enjoyed it a lot. Next video; restoring the mower? 😏 Imagine the views, imagine the subs!
Top work there Dag keep it up your videos are fantastic.
So relaxing while doing hw also hopefully a deck rebuild
I like watching these repair video's. Thanks for the upload!
Excellent job cleaning that block casting!................Smart man, using Assembly lube instead of motor oil as an assembly lubricant!!.............I have seen several cylinders all scratched up from using oil instead of an assembly lubricant.
Growing up around old school hot rod guys, I learned a bunch if stuff so I figured I could pass it along to anyone who wants it. At about 18 minutes in he used that permatex assembly lube, which is good for bearing and seal surfaces, but at 19:30 he coated the cylinder wall with it which is wrong. Engine oil or assembly lube will make it harder for the rings to seat, I was told to use wd-40 or something equivalent. Also always coat both surfaces when putting bearing surfaces together (ex. Coat the pin bore in the piston and wrist pin its self not just one or the other) or it will leave some dry spots on the surface. Greatly enjoy the videos man and I also understand that engine building is a talent and most of us have different talents.
Great restoration! I need to get my 1986 Snapper push mower restored because recently it started burning a little oil and around 5 years ago it started having a slight misfire
Great job mate turn out awesome keep the great content coming
Wow what an awesome machine! Its really quite comical how there has been so many different designs for things that accomplish the same thing at the end of the day. But as they say, variety is the spice of life!
Finally!! Someone that pre lubricates on assembly 👏 and a matching funnel. 👍
Looking at that style flywheel cover its a late 50s to mid 60s 5 hp engine cleaning like you did makes everything look so nice ! in fact you can see the serial # perfect I bet !! Job well done !!! 👍
I figured you would replace more parts. Good job.
Great restoration but it would be nice to see the entire machine restored since it's a very old machine. Thanks
Awesome, enjoyed the clip. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting!
Amazing video! Keep fixing them up👍
Another great video! Your workmanship and level of detail is superb with good descriptions along the way. Makes me want to have a go! Would be nice to see some more videos coming through 👍🏻 Oh and to those who like to pick fault and be negative how about you do a video or two!
WOW, AWESOME RESTORATION
Love your videos, found it a while back and after 15 minutes I hit sub
Thanks be to god a new video to watch. Love it. Keep em coming.
Like the Camembert dish for screws😎😎. Great rebuild👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
what a craftsman. very fun to watch. thanks for making video
I need to order a bunch of paint brushes. They are an awesome idea for these applications.
Amazing work keep it up 👍🏻
A very enjoyable video. I just love these old B=S engines.
Great video Mr restorer. Keep up the good work
Very good job. Thank you for sharing!
