Gary Lai will fly to space in the vehicle he spent his career designing and building.

  • Very inspirational for all of us aspiring aerospace engineers to realize that the future is one where we may get recognized for our achievements by getting to ride on the vehicle we worked to develop. Congrats!

    • Gary is launching on both a rocket (the PM booster) and spacecraft (the capsule) that he himself helped to design which is probably a first since the only other example I know of is the late Konstantin Feoktistov who, while not responsible for the R-7 rocket, was responsible for designing the Voskhod spacecraft that he flew in.

  • Congratulations on your good work, Gary Lai. BUT - The commercial space industry years ago moved well beyond New Shepard. Blue Origin has yet to progress beyond this small, suborbital flight-for-profit project. New Shepard and B.O.'s first effort, the hydrogen peroxide thrusters powered New Armstrong controlled landing demonstrator of years ago, are the only flight hardware B.O. has built. All else are broken contractual promises and paper vaporware for PR, only. B.O.'s inability to perform and their demonstrated willingness to sue NASA if they are not selected for programs - and thereby set America's space program back by at least 6 months - are clear reasons not to allow Blue Origin to participate in future program selection processes, at least until they have developed a good record of delivering as contracted (ULA) and have developed new, reliable vehicles on their own. Bezos is obviously in it for Bezos, country and ULA be damned. This condition must have consequences.
