  • In 1959, when I was 12, I got my first job making 25¢ an hour. Feeling rich, I ordered a Marlin Golden 39A from our local department store. Unknown to me, the clerk called my Dad when I left and asked him if it was okay to which Dad said yes (my background check). I took every quarter I made down to pay for the Marlin. I waited 6 months for the Marlin to come in and when it did, the clerk gave me very one of my quarters back…my Dad had paid for the rifle when I ordered it. I still have the Marlin and my grandson will be getting it.

  • The rifle arrived today and I dialed in the scope just a couple hours ago kzhead.infoUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL . I haven’t shot with a scope in probably 25 years. The X on the left was my target. (the shot almost in the bullseye on the right X was my father in laws first shot after I made adjustments) The two shots circled are my first 2 shots. Then I brought it down - shot once. Then brought it over to the left. From there zeroed it in to dead center. This all was from 25 yards out. Follow instructions carefully when mounting the scope. So far I'm very happy with the purchase.

  • The gun you showed as an 1860 Henry was a newer 1866. The real Henry loaded from the front of the barrel by twisting the end of the magazine and dropping the rounds down the tube. The 1866 used the same action as the 1860 but added the side loading gate. They both used the same elevator type action. That action has to be one of the smoothest I have ever used. And I know these rifles because I have actually used a vintage 1860 Henry and presently own a Uberty replica. (Good luck finding .44 Henry rimfire today!)

  • I was so lucky to be raised by a gunsmith and collector, from blunderbusses, flintlocks, WW1 and 2, breachloaders, 30's Tommyguns, pistols and revolvers, we had, and used most everything imaginable. When I was 12 I graduated from Rabbits & Squirrels to Deer, and for Christmas that year Santa brought me a Winchester '94 in 30-30. • Handing guns down from Father to child is a connection that cannot be broken. A kid buying his first gun is also never forgotten. My son, now 24, wanted a 1911 in 45 ACP. He worked and saved and went to the gun shop with me to buy the Rock Island that he could afford. He REALLY wanted the Colt 1911 that was next to it. He put his money on the counter, and I, unknown to him, put down the remainder that paid for the Colt. The look on that boys face was unforgettable. That was 10 years ago now, and not a month goes by that he talks about acquiring that Colt. He says he will pass it down to HIS son. PS, he later bought a Rock Island to burn rounds thru and keeps the prized gun he got with his Dad, in well used but pristine condition. He will also receive the P-38 bring back my Dad passed on to me from WW II. He liberated it from an SS Hauptman in battle.

    • Like the .30-30 round, .25-35 in Winchester 94s earned that multi-million-seller model -- 1894 initially, then simply 94 -- the moniker "deer rifle" that became interchangeable. However when shooting the lighter carbine version, at the range or plinking -- one can tolerate shooting two to three times as many .25-35 shells than .30-30s because of the marked, diminished difference in recoil. If one tends to shoot frequently or when one passes from middle age to senior status the differences are more significant.

    • "Lynn Talafuse," For the full quote you forget "damned Yankee" before "rifle." Secondly, and more importantly, you are mistaken with your claim the stated comment was about the Spencer. "Confederate Colonel John Mosby, who became infamous for his sudden raids against advanced Union positions, when first encountering the Henry in battle called it 'that damned Yankee rifle that can be loaded on Sunday and fired all week.' Since then that phrase became associated with the Henry rifle." Most gun hobbyists and Civil War armchair commanders / historians already know that phrase backwards and forwards, BUT just to validate this correction, anyone can do a Google search and in 2/10th of a second confirm the legendary phrase uttered about this iconic firearm.

As a young left-handed shooter in the 1960's and '70's, I had almost no left-handed bolt rifles to choose from. So, I went with, and stayed with leverguns. Since I wanted to hunt with a scope-sighted rifle, I finally settled on the Marlin 39A and the Browning BLR in 7mm-08. Over the years I seemed to have killed as much small game, big game, and varmints as my right-handed friends, so I guess I'm doing alright. Thank God for lever-actions!

    • @@christopherwereley2116 yeah, you're right. I can't remember the exact date. I went on savages website once and punched the serial number in and it told me when it was made. But I think 1910 is a bit early

    • @@christopherwereley2116 so I did a bit more investigating. Serial number 159080 was actually manufactured in 1914. Apparently Savage was in the habit of manufacturing things and letting it sit on the shelf for a few years before it actually was assembled and shipped. I agree that there is information saying that the 300 wasn't invented until 1920 but they had other model 99s already available. Chambering would have been a simple adjustment. But anyway every time I look that number up it's between 14 and 17.

  • In 1954, aged 8, I was taught on my father’s ancient Martini Henry rifle. It was a single shot lever action rifle, first used by the British army in the Zulu wars in Africa, around 1880. Dad used it to shoot wild dogs, called dingos, which would attack our sheep. 10 years later, I became familiar with a .22 rifle, the Marlin Levermatic. It had microgroove rifling, with 15 lands instead of the usual 9. That rifle was amazing. I just had to look at a target, pull the trigger, and hit it with nearly 100% accuracy. Like a camera, all I had to do was point and shoot. As an cadet at school we brought our .303 Lee Enfield army rifles home, carrying them on the school bus, bolts safely in our pocket. We could buy cases of ex army 30e ammo very cheaply from the local garage. In 1961 we shot kangaroos, in plague numbers after recent floods. The kangaroo meat was sold to West Germany. Our CO was pretty relaxed about we lads borrowing the rifles, and we always returned them if there was a head office inspection. But one very posh high school made waves when they discovered a Bren machine was missing, not being returned after being borrowed. Everyone thought that was hilarious.

A .308 Winchester just stomps the performance of a 30-30 and the Model 88 turning bolt action is smoother and stronger. It is a far superior saddle gun and is damn accurate when scoped. You should have included this wonderful rifle. (I own two of them and gave my Model 1894 30-30 away). I also like my Winchester model 1886 chambered in 45-70.
