On May 14 I realized how unsafe is late crossing Cramond Causaway. I have captured one late crossing guy and 4 Adults and Dog cut off by tide. I hope later on, they made their own way ashore and everyone was OK.
My husband is a lifeboat man from South Queensferry and they are VERY regularly called out to "rescue"people from Cramond.There's absolutely no excuse for anyone to be stranded-numerous signs,tide tables etc make it abundantly clear when it's safe to cross.Everyone on a lifeboat is a volunteer with a normal job but they drop everything when the call comes.A turnout similar to this costs around £1000 when all the running costs are taken into account although no wages are paid.My husband was called out last Christmas Day in the middle of our dinner when some idiots were caught by the tide.Of course,he always turns out whatever the call but personally I think anyone left on the island should wait there until low tide-it's not a great hardship.Should they be rescued by lifeboat then they should pay towards the cost.It's different from an accident at sea which is normally no ones fault-those stranded on Cramond have only themselves to blame.
I sure agree with you on that. Unless there's some kind of medical emergency, they need to wait for then next low tide. When did it come about that people's ignorant and poor planning somehow becomes a "drop everything and save them" emergency for everybody else?
Why don’t they build a bus stop type shelter there for when people get stranded and make them wait for the tide.

Honestly, I don't know why the lifeboat crews keep coming out for these people. Make them wait the six hours out for not reading tide times.
Perhaps you are being rather harsh on these poor cretins by expecting them to actually take the time to read the clearly posted timetable. Because you see, if the said "tide timetable" does not come in the form of an app on their phones, then it is considered a debilitating handicap for people of such ilk.

No, they would have to wait lot longer, at least to 0:30am. Chart at the beginning says high-tide is at 9.15pm and low tide again at 0.55am. They would have to spend there at least another 10 hours before they could safely cross back to the mainland. This was filmed in May so i assume nights get still pretty cold in Scotland averaging probably 5 degrees celsius during the night and i can seem them wearing only some sort of long sleeve shirts and light jacket. Who knows if they would "survive"
@@DejvmanXsindicate You're one of those people who need a bleeping app to explain things to you. It clearly says on the chart that WHITE times are SAFE times to cross. Next WHITE time is 21.15. The RED times are HIGH tide. "Times listed in RED are when TO BE BACK ON THE MAINLAND"

They should be made to pay for this service. The times of the tide are clearly stated and if they choose not to follow the rules they should have to face the consequences.
When you start making people pay for emergency services, then people will stop calling them, then you will end up with a very real emergency where people die because nobody made the call soon enough. I'm sure most volunteer life guards will put up with the inconvenience so long as everyone's safe. Let's face it, your typical dog walker isn't Ray Mears or Bear Grylls, and probably didn't figure on having to stay on an island for 6 hours where it can get pretty nippy at any time of year, especially at night. Some people are always going to be caught out by the tides, despite the wealth of information sources available.
I live on the coast, we have a 10+ metre tidal range, the second highest on the planet. It's funny seeing people turn up at the harbour to do crabbing, and they stand there incredulous, banging on about there not being any water there when there was loads this morning!
I was a kid that grew up there (many years ago) and my pals & I found that out the hard way sometimes! Still, it was an adventure then and the Coastguard were never called; no mobile phones in the late '70s & early '80s. We just camped out
same, had a ball :O)

Aye in the 80s it never had that lovely nice path to walk out either it was the old pipe and fallen down concrete. Got caught out once and ended up with wet jeans lol

There should be a charge, say £250 per person. The cost should be posted right by the tide times. Let’s see how many people get stranded.

Good video. Someone Friday 4th Aug. caught by the tide on the causeway, found hugging one of the WWII pillars. Had to be rescued.

This is Crazy.I know the guy crossing .I went this year .It was beautiful.
Normally the problem with incidents like this on tidal waters is that so many people just don't understand how tides work.This even includes some boat owners who turn up at randomly at tidal slipways and launch not now knowing if it's going out or coming in.Three hours later they wonder why the nice slipway from before is now just sticky mud when they're just about to run out of petrol.It doesn't help that even on the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) course they don't teach you these specifics about how the tides work.They take six (and a little bit) hours to go out and another six hours (and a little bit) to come back in again.That's it,about the simplest thing ever in the history of simple things. But in this case they have very sensibly have colour coded safe crossing times.So how is it that even with this information put there for their safety where everyone can see it,these idiots still get themselves stranded on the island? How would they feel if the lifeboat that comes out to rescue them missed attending a REAL emergency where lives really were in danger because of their stupidity? Leave them there to wait for the tide to go out.

are the calculated incoming tide times accurate? judging from the googlemaps pictures hikers do the crossing all year round , I would like to do this walk to this island some time
Times of High and Low water are 99.9999% accurate! Factors that can and do cause fluctuations, the incoming current maybe flowing faster or slower than normal due to influences not known when the time and height were calculated. Bear in mind too that the cause of the tide is those two big things in the sky - the yellow and white things called the Sun and the Moon. The position of the Moon relative to the Earth and Sun is known to the milli-second for centuries ahead. Now that is what you might call 'accurate'
Storm surges can cause unusually high and early tides.

Why have that high barrage, and make the causeway lower so it gets covered? Why isn't there a path higher up?
Build a hut on the island with wool blanket, solar powered phone charging and wifi. Make them wait. Pay for it with overpriced vending machines.

not necessarily true, some people have medical conditions that could pose a challenge in such situations, although I appreciate these people are extremely stupid for not checking the tide times and getting back in time

There’s always some idiot that pushes the envelope. I remember five or six years ago on a cruise ship. Looked out of our balcony and saw four people running for the ship after it had just left the dock an hour late.......... I understand they had to arrange transportation to the next destination to get back on. 🤦♂️🤦♂️

The cruise company have to pay for their berth and would probably incur extra costs. Let the idiots pay for overnight accommodation and transport to the ships next destination. They wont be late again.

Signs are clear about times. Notices warn people about tides and danger of being stranded. All people do now is call the RNLI if they are stranded and they come and rescue them. Happens all the time now and puts others who are in real danger at risk while Queensferry RNLI are wasting their time picking up idiots stranded at Cramond Island.

@@livelongandprosper70 over half of all callouts from that station is for Cramond Island. Let's not forget Holy Island also which is usually RAF rescue. The costs is shocking. Do you still think it is acceptable that over half of callouts including helicopters for Holy Island is fine. We taxpayers pay for the helicopters and people who donate to the lifeboats think their money goes to rescue genuine cases of sinking boats etc...

No it wouldn’t be possible to walk along the structure next to the causeway, as far as I remember it’s not continuous and really high. I wouldn’t risk swimming either with all the different currents. It’s a beautiful place to visit and if you lose track of time there’s plenty of shelter to wait it out.
No, looks like a wall but it's a bit of an illusion, those are the concrete pillars they put to try and sink/stop enemy ships/subs from passing the channel. They look a little bit like pyramids.

Must be a common occurrence if the warning sign has a separate code for this when you call 911.
The code on the sign gives the coastguard the exact location when you speak to them. Calling 911 would get you nowhere, this isn't the USA. In the UK it's 999 (introduced in 1937). The USA only got around to introducing 911 in the 1960s.
If you stock up on beer and weed then 6 hours rolls by in no time. Just be prepared to wrap up for inclement weather, which can happen at any time of year in Scotland, especially around the coast.
The Coastguard co-ordinate the rescues - its the RNLI that do the rescuing ! That's the Queensferry RNLI Lifeboat.
Kinghorn's lifeboat across in Fife. Over half of that station rescues are stuck people on this island. As a Edinburgh resident it is a standing joke here with the number of people doing this island carelessly. Same with holy island just south of Edinburgh. But that one is a car drive across the causeway and on average one car a month gets trapped by the tide and even washed away. That one is usually raf rescue by helicopter. Shocking. Check out clips on KZhead for Holy Island rescues as well as cramond Island. We should do what Spain does and charge people for rescue. More so when it is down to stupidity.

Stranded on the island.. A rescue by the R N L I. You should make a donation to there fund.... A GOOD DONATION. They Don't get paid. They are volunteers. They are wonderful people.

I live on the shores of the Forth and the tide can come in really quickly in some places, and is often wind dependent so I dont blame her. People drown in these waters every year.

raise the causeway and put in hand rails with chains. The chain posts could have tide depth markers on them...
Or people could learn to read the timetables and judge the conditions. Why should the authorities waste thousands of pounds catering to stupid people?

Theres a part time job there for someone with a boat. Someone local who works from home & is around a lot of the time. It would be a long wait for the tide. I guess it does provide some practice for RNLI team members & gives them a chance to keep an eye on the area. There is shelter on the island, so instead of rescuing they could leave basic necessities locked up on the island & provide a combination to unlock when they are needed. Just drinking water & basic rations, a torch, mats & blankets & a bucket & loo roll & first aid stuff. Then they would only have to rescue cases in medical need.
Very good idea, although I'd be tempted to get deliberately stranded to save me carrying all my sleeping gear :)

Haha my family with their dog got stranded there once too! they had to wait it out. They somehow lost their keys on the island too! I just spend last night deliberately marooned on the island for a #microadventure, slept in one of the creepy military huts. Wouldn't like to stay the night without a mat and sleeping bag!

They could’ve crossed , they’d have got their feet wet but they would’ve been safe
The tidal range on the firth of forth can be around 6m, there is a huge expanse of sand to the east and a huge expanse of deep mud to the west as well as the river almond so only a few hundred metres to the west is deep water. The causeway is a few metres above chart datum which means it gets covered a few hours after low water. The tide follows a sine curve so using the rule of 12th's mean that the biggest change in depth will occur just after the causeway is covered. Whilst you could set off in a few centimetres of water by the time you get midway across you could be up to your waist with water pushing you west towards the deeper water of the river almond. Better option would be to just go up onto the island and wait for the next tide.

It shouldn't be too difficult to rig up a solar powered horn with wifi connection to tide tables online to give a three blast warning 15 minutes before the crossing deadline. Better than constantly wasting RNLI resources.
This is why I always carry a pack and shelter with me for incase I get stranded

Looks like a hell of a business to me! 25£ to get off the island! How much does an old boat cost? Not much in the United States. I bet everybody went there would pay it too if the Coast Guard wasn't coming.
That's a full on island, those people are in no danger. They can just sit and enjoy the view until the tide goes out again. Or better still try respecting the ocean. Why is a lifeboat there?? What if someone actually needs to be rescued?
Put a pub on higher ground and they won't care how long the tide is in.

How unbelievably stupid, I have no sympathy for them at all. Take note of very important times, check watch regularly, not difficult. Presumably the coastguard picked them up & I hope charged them for the ride.
