This is the first time I could see real concern in Keith's face. But like a good aviator or captain, he remembered his training, "calm begets calm". Well done, Keith!
Concern, he was shitting himself.
Just stumbled on your channel, it looks pretty cool, so I subscribed.👍🏻
i really like that sentiment. it paraphrases the rudyard kipling poem perfectly! "If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too: If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, . . . Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And - which is more - you’ll be a Man, my son!"
He's more experienced than most, by now.
crew should have been in life jackets and clipped on
Very impressed with how calm everyone was, and how Keith showed strong, calm leadership through a really rough passage. You guys are really awesome!
Now it's time for the family to go chew some of those leaves in Yemen.
LMAO
Very nice
Good
High pirate risk area. Sketchy passage, weather was a blessing in disguise.
Like they are not rocking Ak’s, 9, and 45. I would bet they are locked and loaded somewhere.
@jackspinner4727 they've discussed this previously. They are not packing any guns

This family is creating moments and Memories that they will never forget and it’s awesome
Right...but coast of Somalia? Who thinks that is a good idea? 46 knots.
@@UTAH100 Very bad idea!
@@UTAH100 dont think they had any choice with the waves and currents
46 knots of wind is NO joke!! You guys handled it with such calm, well done!
I'm surprised to see no one mention the lack of life jackets on the kids while on the deck. In those rough waters, a much bigger rogue wave would have washed them right off the deck!
Not sure where he said 46 I heard 32 knots and saw that on the meter as well? Maybe I missed something in the video?

I find it amazing how calm the family is through diversity. You all just tackle the tough situations with such calm professionalism. Thank you for sharing your lives.
diversity can be quite unnerving \s
yes very professional without safety vest
Adversity
They don’t appear to be diverse 👨🏼👩🏻🦰👩🏻👨🏼🦱
Guys, we met when we were all in Hollywood a few years back. Everyone should have on an PFD in those seas - you could never pull off a MOB recovery quickly if someone goes over. Good luck and safe passages!
Need the FLEX SEAL guy on all boat trips.
The kids were like Meh ! its ok Dads got it... Give yourself a massive pat on the back Keith, you're the man.
That's why they're kids Meh! They watch and learn in order to grow to get established themselves.
No life vests
@@Fanax what are you on about?
@@evelynperk6011 also no one wearing the safety watches
I'm generally not a "safety Sally," but with seas like that I'm surprised you didn't require life jackets for anyone stepping outside. Scary stuff.
No kidding. 40+ kn huge sea state and out of cockpit without life jackets or tethers - not my kids, or me for that matter.
@@robmaclachlan1264 thats why you aren't out there bluewater sailing.
@@seawater1322 if someone went overboard in those conditions, there would be a very slim chance of recovery. Not to mention the danger it would put the remaining crew in. A smart sailor would be tethered when on deck.
Hats of to brave people like these ' I get jitz looking at the ocean from land & flying over .
They were fortunate they didn’t get a massive rouge wave or extreme wind gust which could have rolled them. Why no harness and life jacket at any time during this extreme weather?
This was a great episode. Really showing how a family works together when its tough. What a childhood these kids are having. It will shape their lives and their childrens as well.
Great
sailing your family through pirates' territory...pretty brave stuff and risky as well!

Zatara never disappoints! Not to be insensitive for your well being, it was an action packed video. Everyone seems to have their emotions in control especially Kieth under the circumstances. Really surprised no one was wearing life jackets in these extreme conditions, and no one was sea sick 🤕. Glad you are safe!
Yeah, I was surprised to see no life jackets while out near sugar scoops in rough seas.
I can’t tell if these comments are serious or not 😂😂😂 these seas aren’t rough, literally a normal day with wind

@@delmar2169 why that is nothing to do with the video
First of all, amazing video! But I was kinda surprised no one was wearing any life jackets?! I think things could go sideways pretty quickly once someone slips and falls overboard.
No life jackets, with emergency radios in heavy seas, in very small boat? Catamarans are fast but they are subject to hull flex and leakage. In any event I wish you safe travels and a wonderful adventure.
There was a fellow sailor on a cat that made that route maybe 10 years ago. He was a dentist from Arizona I believe. He addressed the stresses on the boat (especially cats) with speed. He dragged a line behind the boat with various things (junk) attached to slow the boat down and minimize speed. I wish I could find his site again. Anyway he also had a segment with huge winds on the Red Sea.
For obvious reasons this is one of the best and most interesting videos you’ve ever put out. I would have been happy to watch another 20-30 minutes of this adventure too! Well done Zatara!
From my experience with boats and recording videos it always looks so tame on video compared to in person is 10x bigger. Same as trying to record steep hills or mountains theres never enough perspective to show the gravity of things. Glad you arrived safely and had time to enjoy the calm after the chaos 😊
Same with snow storms
@Jeremy Altom ive never seen snow but i can imagine that would probably take the cake for hardest to show it!
Nice team work. Love a bit of roughers I'm fascinated that in that sea state, none of you were wearing harnesses, safety lines or even pfd's. The ocean doesn't care what happens to you. That's up to you as crewmates.
Looks like they wore some harnesses at one point. You can see them on the table up on deck at the end of the video. Just didn't show it in the video itself.
My thoughts exactly!
Wow - amazing job. Keith’s ability to stay calm truly begets calm. I hope everyone is able to learn his many tricks to keeping the boat safe and operable.
I loved that part too when he said that. It's a skill to have the presence of mind and mental agility to put on a look of confident calmness, even when under adversity because if you don't mass hysteria creeps in and a look of worry and unease spreads fast. Great job Captain Keith!
Keeping the boat safe includes using proper safety equipment.
And not be an asshole by putting his family at risk from Somali pirates the dumb fuck
I am so glad you are all safe! That was very concerning and scary to face such big waves.
When the emergency hatch leaks it’s because there is torsion forces at play. This means that your bulkhead have start moving. You maybe have got the classic catamaran problem with loose bulkheads. Those show up after prolonged heavy weather where torsion forces are at their strongest level.
Oh yeah? well I have no idea what you just said
It was a damaged seal on the hatch nothing to do with baulkheads
@@thebirdlady4304 It was probably the twisting forces that caused the seal to get damaged in the first place...
And I'm back.....7 months ago this popped up as a suggestion on my KZhead even though I had no sailing stuff....Started watching a couple minutes based on title and then stopped. Went back to episode 1 and have been entranced ever since. Have loved every minute of it. Love the world outlook of the two of you. Loved how the kids have grown. So envious of the places you've been that I've not but thankfully a lot as looked familiar (Europe, Seychelles, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand). Have the song on my Spotify now and the first time it popped up randomly I can't even describe the actual physical reaction I had, the feeling of happiness thinking I was going to get to watch another episode. It's been a joy to watch all of these. Beyond impressed with what you've done
That was insanely scary! Well done Keith for keeping everyone calm, you are definitely a seasoned sailor! Also, those escape hatches have been a problem for many catamarans.
A seasoned sailor would have his family and himself in life vest, be tied off on deck and have emergency gear ready to go on those types of waters.
but no sign of a life vest.
I think I saw them at the ready on the outdoor table???
@@robstratton6296 i was wondering at what point they would wear life vests , if i was wandering outside id want one on , a freak wave could easily throw you over
@@robstratton6296 this crew could be on Deadliest Catch and still wouldn’t wear a vest.
one of those sails that is stressful and scary, but once over and some time passes, it is one adventure story you will never forget. great job!
Im so glad you guys are still sailing. I thought I saw a video about you guys giving it up a while back. Dad looks like Kevin Costner and definitely giving water world vibes. You guys rock. Stay safe out there!
I’ve been watching Finn’s videos and had no idea there was a whole family channel, this is amazing!!
I believe every boat or ship needs to be tested, check, crew tested , check. Didn’t see Finn until the end, hope he was well . Love the camera work Renee . That was rough. Good sailing y’all.
I noticed that as well. I think he was on the midnight watch (Renee covered the watches last week) and after he finished he slept through the rough seas; when he did appear he was still in his PJs. Certainly not the same family on their first crossing in the Beneteau monohull many years ago, they have acquired their sea legs.
Gotta testm
A calm demeanor keeps those around you relaxed. Top man Keith and you jsve a very well seasoned crew right behind you👏👏
Daddy is absolutely GORGEOUS!
When I was in the Navy that passage there around the horn of africa was by far the worst minus the few times we were out in a hurricane. We even refueled while underway just north of where you are. The supply ship lost steering control at the bridge and was about 8 inches from running into us when we broke away. Great sailing folks! I enjoy watching your videos every week. Keep it up and I can't wait to one day get back out on the water. Fair winds and following seas from here on out.
I was holding my breath there for a while. I was amazed that Kate was munching something as the boat tipped back and forth. Lol. Thanks for sharing. Eagerly awaiting the next episode. Blessings to all.
Beautiful boat, and good on you for choosing to raise your kids the way you have. God bless. Looks like a blast!
One of my favorite sayings I learned in scuba diving is “when times get tough wind your watch.” Meaning stay calm and do what you know as in rely on your training.
I’ve watched a lot of your stuff and you’ve been blessed with weather. Oceans can get very scary at times. A back ground working with machinery and being the boss means getting the job done whatever it takes. Nice work Keith
You are 100% correct Keith. "Calm begets calm." As the lead nurse in many Code Blue situations that is exactly what I have said for years. Panic spreads like a nuclear chain reaction. I can just imagine taking my 40ft monohull through that mess. An IP 40 is tough, but I feel like it would have been tossed around more than Zatara. I've never sailed in those conditions (yet) so I don't know. Honestly, I worry more about the volatile area you are in. Renee, very good filming! That had to be a chore for sure. Glad you and Aquarius are all safe!
Just discovered your channel yesterday after you were featured in a news article (I think Fox?). Watched a number of your first videos and have begun watching some of your more current videos. Your kids have grown up and matured so much! WOW what a blessing to have your kids grow up in the life you chose!
"if you stay calm, everyone else will be calm" that is my motto as a Head chef.. Respect!
Wow! Great Job Captain Keith! Thanks for sharing this footage. Continued prayers for safe passage up the Red Sea
I would have to disagree with this. A good captain is responsible for the crew’s safety and the lack of life jackets during those rough seas was very irresponsible. One day your luck will run out.
46 nœuds, c'est banal en Méditerranée.
I'm not a sailor, but I'm still curious if a drift sock would have helped you slow down. Thanks!
Scary trip, you're all so brave. Glad you made it safely. Just look out the windown and enjoy the ride!

I don't know much about sailing and boating but watching this video was very interesting. Glad you enjoy what you do.
Oh my God you have the best dad and captain. There is nothing he cannot deal with. You really could see the fear and the anxiety in his eyes, but he could still stay calm, also with the mom holding the camera all the way. Congrats!
Renee, applause, I would love to hug you all in real
Yeah right. Have they been kidnapped yet by the pirates
It's always a good idea to stuff the hatch with towels or any physical barrier to stop the flow. You can also pump the water into a bucket. You don't want loose water in the boat. Some damage control equipment and training might be a good investment.. I would say Zatara has been very fortunate in the weather world for this to be it's first big big sea adventure.
Wise words coming from a couch potato with no experience. Freaking lake sailor.
get some Flex tape so that when you have a water where you don't want it you just cover that area and you won't have any problems. Good sailing.
WOW!!!! 1.1 MILLION VIEWS!!!! Congratulations!!!! Those rough seas paid off 😏
We're glad you made it through the pirate waters safely..I'd get someone to glass over that hatch. I think more people have had trouble with the emergency hatch than the people who have been saved .
Agreed. Keith said he’s getting it sealed up as soon as we are able.
@@SailingZatara great idea to seal shut. But keep a hammer or axe near by in case of emergency......
Reminds me of the Wynns crossing over to NZ. More trouble than safety it appears!
@@SailingZatara You might want to check to see if that hatch is a Coast Guard requirement. That hatch was put there for a specific reason.
You could glass it over but stencil a cut/chop zone externally to aid rescue personnel so they can cut their way in without hitting a structural support
The Privilege 585 handled those rough seas like a champ! Awesome job Captain Keith and Crew!!

I just found your channel on KZhead I’ve enjoyed watching your adventures. I’m impressed with how well your family work together especially the kids they are amazing. Keep cruising. Renee I love your positive calm attitude. Keith too
Beautiful boat, what an amazing adventure for your family. Thanks for documenting.
Bless your hearts! That looked so rough! When Keith says, “calm begets calm”, he truly looks exhausted. I’m sure he was speaking to you, Renee, like he was saying “please, CHILL!”. Your kids looked so calm throughout the entire ordeal. Amazing!
This is what they talk about regarding how these adventures will one day affect the kids. They are learning calm, learning respect and order, all needed in situations like this. Kids growing up living their lives on the Internet in their basements will never have such enrichment. These are the kids that will grow up to have anxiety issues, need Xanax and be clueless in emergencies. Keep up the good work zatara, ignore the naysayers who say things like depriving your kids, bla bla bla. This is REAL life adventure and education, the real one that will forever shape their lives. There will always be time for formal education, right now THIS IS LIVING LIFE.
Wow! That was so scary! The escape hatch freaks me out, but they are a necessity. Thank God you had no issues with Pirates! Onto the next epic adventure!!
